I just returned home after a two week stay in Lubbock for work with my orchestra. Lubbock has…read morenever been an easy place for me to fit in, on the whole I've found the people there to be fairly closed off, and my stays for orchestra have over the years given me some very isolated, lonely weeks. Thanks to Crossfit Lubbock, I have discovered truly welcoming people, and I'm so grateful for the outlet and excellent coaching there. I found out about them while working out in Midland at David's old gym, Crossfit FMS. A lady one day said I should check out the new digs up in Lubbock, as I was headed there, and I did, even having established drop ins at another box in town for the previous couple of years. The facility is wonderful, spacious and fully equipped. They keep things clean and run some great programming. They are obviously doing things right as they sent a team to the Games last summer as a very new gym, but they don't leave out the "little guy." They make sure that all athletes, from beginner to advanced, get a solid workout and constructive feedback. I was able to work out there 10 times during my stay, and they even made sure I got judged for my Open 16.2 workout. The people finished with their wod came over to cheer me on in the final, agonizing minutes of attempting my last cleans when I was just totally gassed. What a great feeling to have relative strangers backing you all the way to the end. I particularly enjoy their "weakness Wednesday" routine, which is a 20 minute EMOM calling all participating athletes to choose two weaknesses to alternate during even/odd minutes. How awesome. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. I focused both my Wednesdays on pull strict pull ups and handstand push ups, and my HSPU kipping is vastly improved in just that short time. One of the advanced athletes gave me some breakthrough tips on double unders, totally unsolicited. It was so wonderful that she took the time to share the things that worked for her. I think the culture David and Steven are cultivating out there captures some of the best elements of the crossfit community. There is no drama, no bull, no looking down at those of us who still work with heavily scaled skills, just good, hard workouts and a genuine effort to give everyone a chance to improve their skills and reach past their comfort zones in a supportive environment. I can't wait for the final week of concerts of the 2015-1016 LSO season so I can work out there again.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY HERE..... I REPEAT DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY HERE!!!!!…read more I was looking to get my son enrolled because I had such a great experience at another studio called BAM BAM in Houston . Well I signed up for a two week trial and we showed up and it was such a gloomy place not one instructor is smiling or even a bit friendly .... it's like a bunch of angry ppl or socially disconnected people. My son was ready to go as we walked in .... my son isn't bad or anything he is just a normal active boy. We did the long sit and listen to the instructor brag about himself session , then he kept going on and on about backing police and like police do no wrong when we ALL know police can be bad just like anybody else and my son and I did a small class. The lady they had us with was clearly still in training and didn't know what she was doing. After that we didn't get our two week trial, we got thrown into a office and was super pressured to sign up for classes because if we didn't sign up that day it was going to be so much more expensive to sign up , I went along with my husbands decision to sign up and it was the worst decision ever. My son never wanted to go to class and the more I went I understood why. I have seen great classes and students who get out on the mat and give it their all , great behavior from students who learn the art and love it..... Pittman Academy was none of that, everybody looks like they don't want to smile and they are scared to enjoy class. Paid the full price for the classes for a family of 4 and didn't go for no more than a month , if that..... me and my youngest son never even started..... biggest waste of money and time, wish it would have been a different outcome but nope. Sadly someone called me from the studio and I told him exactly how I felt, all he had to say was well you have a good day!!!! Pittman or anybody else who works there could careless why anybody isn't coming ..... it's literally been months and they just called lol. Worst purchase of my life .....

RockBox -- R-O-C-K-B-O-X -- really does rock…read more This location was pure fun from start to finish. All smiles, great energy, and a vibe that makes you forget you're about to work really hard. I took a speed + lower body day, and wow... super intense in the best way possible. Challenging, sweaty, and incredibly well-paced. One big win for me: I booked through ClassPass, which made it super easy and very affordable -- perfect if you don't want to commit right away or if you're traveling and like to drop into solid workouts wherever you are. What really sets this RockBox apart is how much they offer beyond just group classes. They've got heart rate monitors, open gym access for members, and even boxing-focused personal training days when classes aren't running. I also love that they bring in outside instructors and events, which gives the space a community feel instead of that cookie-cutter franchise vibe. Other highlights: * Run club (and a 5K coming up!) * Kickboxing & boxing-based workouts * Functional, station-style training with timers * One shower + two large restrooms (always appreciated) * Open gym when group classes aren't in session And can we talk about the branding for a second? The mascot is adorable, the space is clean and upbeat, and the whole place just feels welcoming and fun. RockBox is one of those franchises you're genuinely excited to see popping up around the U.S. -- and this location absolutely delivers. High energy, great programming, flexible options, and a team that clearly loves what they do. RockBox rocks. Period.
