And while it might not seem like much while you are walking DOWN them, in this antigravity paradox just remember, what goes down must also come back up--unless you plan on sleeping down there. Once you've descended the 300 stairs (actually, even on the way down), the views are absolutely spectacular. The setting is tranquil and relaxing, and there are several placards along the way which tell the story of the Springs and describe so many interesting aspects of this Huron National Forest site. Feel free to take your time meandering about in the shade of the canopied forest--for your looming ascent will have you longing for that serene setting. Once you've read all the informational signs and committed the gorgeous views to memory (or at least snapped some memorable phots thereof), its time to climb. Yep, those same 300 stairs that seemed so innocent on your decent now become your nemesis. In the mid summer heat, you also gain a deep appreciation for the perspiration-evoking power of Michigan's humidity. And, for those ultra-tough cross fit types out there that may scoff at those panting, wheezing, sweating souls such as, perhaps, me, maybe you should attack the 300 stairs Rocky Balboa style and enjoy yourself a victory dance at the top (after which, if you are feeling a little humanitarian urge, you could send down a tow rope or some other means of pulling my kind up the 186 stairs I still need to climb).

My friends and I had so much fun at White's a few weekend's ago, I had to Yelp about it…read more Of the White's locations, this is my personal favorite. This campground is not too far of I-75, in Michigan's mid-lower peninsula, and is completely surrounded by the Rifle River. It 'feels' like you are up north. Leave your cell phones in the car, you won't need it and you can't get a signal anyway. {Which some see as a con; I see as a pro.} The camp is set up in group campsites that range in size, each with a view of the river, a fire pit, and some electrical hook-ups. The rifle river is a nice easy river for beginners, and White's rents tubes, rafts, kayaks, and canoes. White's also offers a number of trips, from a 2 hour tube float, to a several day canoe trips. Another great feature, White's drops you off up stream, and you paddle back to your campsite. {No getting in the car all wet and sandy.} On the weekends the river, and this campground can get a little busy and loud, and may not be the best environment for small children. On the weekdays, things quiet down considerably. I took a kayak trip on a Tuesday, and the wildlife on the river was amazing - I saw wood ducks, teal ducks, a deer, a young bald eagle, and a blue heron. For those non-campers, a couple of cautions - this location does not have showers or flush toilets. The outhouses are clean and well kept, and coin operated showers are available at the main campground (about 20 minutes away). Of course there is the river, but please, if you choose this option use earth-friendly soaps and shampoos, those that do not contain phosphates (Not Ivory because it floats).

My friends would rave about how fun it is so I decided one year when I was maybe 11-12 that I would go. Now I'm 18 and still scarred from it. I will say, aside from the weird things they did there, it was a fun camp, but not worth the lifelong trauma. First of all, when eating in the cafeteria, if you accidentally chewed with your mouth open, you would get called out by all the other kids and counsellors and made to go under the table and scream "I'm a piggly wiggly" to which everyone would respond with "what?" and repeated at least once or twice. There's another instance of this where if you put your elbows on the table even if for a split second, again, you'd get called out and you'd have to do a lap or two around the cafeteria while people chanted a humiliating song at you. Another thing they did which to this day turned me away from Christianity was take us to the field saying we were playing a game, and proceeding to chase after everyone while dressed in all black with black makeup talking about how "Satan is our God" to which you'd have to respond with why God is our savior and not Satan. As an 11 year old who thinks we're about to play a fun game like "Steal the Bacon" or whatever, the outcome scared me half to death and when I cried from being terrified, I was taken to the church and given Oreos as compensation. Great, right? Anyways, I don't know if any of this has changed within the past few years, as I obviously never went back, but I sure hope it has. What I do know now is that they're teaching kids how to play poker if you care about that at all.

My family and I waited probably close to 30 minutes to even have someone come and talk to us by the register. There was a line of people behind us and even some people that were in the diner just to sit down. They were waiting for over an hour. To continue to add to my bad experience, were bowling in lane 11 and it would constantly mess up and kick the head pin back onto the alley. We had them come out several times and not once did they offer us a new lane or attempt to fix the issue. We also had an issue where it would not recognize our throw and make us go again, which isn't always a bad thing but it was the cherry on top of my already awful experience. If any of my friends or family are ever in the area, I will happily pay them to not show up here. It was that awful.
