She was used to us going to Fiesta Island on weekends and paddle boarding and swimming her little heart out. We haven't heard her whimper for joy in the last year since having our baby. This was such a sweet way to celebrate her 12th birthday and have. Whole hour dedicated to her. They say there's a 7 to 1 rule with dogs: one hour to us is 7 hours to them since they have such a shorter lifespan. We recently toured this K9 boarding facility and were initially very impressed. The space was clean and well-maintained, the staff seemed knowledgeable, and we appreciated the frequency that dogs are let out, the structured play groups, and the variety of add-on options like swimming. Based on all this, we decided to book a weekend boarding stay for our dog. Per staff recommendation, we scheduled a doggy daycare day before the boarding weekend to help ease our dog into the environment and allow him to be evaluated for playgroup compatibility. After picking him up from daycare, the staff didn't offer information until I asked how it went. And she told me he "did well and played well with others," which gave us confidence to move forward with boarding for a weekend. However, the communication during and after the actual boarding experience left a lot to be desired. At drop-off, we gave our feeding instructions and were again told by staff about how often our dog would be taken out and his playgroup participation. But when we picked him up after almost 3 full days, the staff seemed either unwilling or unable to give us much feedback. It felt like pulling teeth to get even basic information, and when we asked about his playgroup experience, we were told he didn't participate because he hadn't been tested--despite the entire purpose of the prior daycare experience being to complete that very test. Therefore it felt like a breakdown in communication, either the day care staff gave me incorrect information about being tested or they forgot to make a note in his file about which group to place him in. When I noted we had done the compatibility test prior at doggy day care, the response was, "Well, we had over 100 dogs this weekend and it was just too busy to test him." It came off as more of an excuse than an explanation and left us feeling disappointed. As new clients, and this being our dog's first time boarding with them, we had hoped for clearer communication and a bit more transparency. Again I wasn't looking for an over the top detailed report but just a couple key highlights with it having been our first boarding experience there. While the facility itself seems solid and has numerous positive reviews, the lack of follow-through and inconsistent communication made it hard to feel confident in the overall care--it left us feeling uneasy and frustrated. Additionally a few days later our dog showed symptoms of Kennel Cough and this was the only place he had been socialized the week before and after. While I recognize our dog being vaccinated doesn't guarantee he won't catch some strains, it was concerning to see that proof of vaccinations wasn't required like we originally thought when setting up our account online. At this point we will not be returning and will continue our search for a doggy day are and boarding facility. read more

I rarely leave reviews, but after my experience with Ridgeside K9 in Winchester, I feel it's important to share. This review reflects my personal experience and opinion, and is shared in the interest of helping other pet owners make informed decisions. My intention in enrolling my two Aussie puppies in their board-and-train program was to provide them with structured, compassionate guidance. What unfolded instead was emotionally exhausting, financially draining, and deeply disappointing. Despite clearly and repeatedly stating--both in advance and directly to the trainer on the day of pickup--that I did not consent to pain-based tools, my puppies were trained using e-collars, prong collars, and slip leads. While I was told the e-collars would be used at levels comparable to physical therapy stimulation, I would challenge anyone to try a level 7-9 setting on themselves and still argue it isn't rooted in pain. The trainer later confirmed that my male dog required "higher levels" to override his anxiety and justified it by saying, "he's in control of how much discomfort he chooses to endure." That logic is deeply flawed--the dog isn't holding the remote, the trainer is. These tools were applied without transparent discussion or challenges during training or my informed consent. Equally troubling was the use of a slip lead on my puppy, which goes directly against standard veterinary guidance. Slip leads are not recommended for young dogs due to the risk of tracheal injury, and they are especially inappropriate for dogs who pull or resist leash pressure--precisely the issue my dog was sent to address. In my view, using a slip lead in this context was not just ineffective--it felt inhumane, especially considering their age and condition. My male dog returned home with a throat injury that, nearly two months later, is still under veterinary treatment. In addition, he has undergone multiple rounds of medication for a parasitic infection (Giardia) contracted during the program--despite assurances of strict hygiene protocols. When I raised this issue, the illness was attributed to the possibility of him drinking from standing water on trail walks. However, the trainer had previously stated that, due to his anxiety, they had not progressed to that level of public training. This contradiction only deepened my concern about the accuracy and consistency of the information I was given. Rather than acknowledge the seriousness of these issues, the organization attempted to compare the illness to a child "building immunity" at school. This analogy not only downplays the severity of Giardia--which is notoriously difficult to eradicate--but also reveals a lack of accountability and understanding of the real distress this has caused. I'm now over $1,000 into veterinary care, on top of a $6,000 program cost that ultimately failed to deliver safe or compassionate outcomes. Even more heartbreaking has been the emotional regression. Both dogs, once confident with basic commands, returned fearful and avoidant. Simple cues now cause visible anxiety--particularly in the dog with the throat injury. This was not the result of constructive training. Both dogs would literally run and hide under furniture when given even basic commands, not simply ignore, run and hide. What concerns me most is the organization's ongoing refusal to take responsibility. Rather than owning the harm done, they defer to legal waivers--as if paperwork overrides ethical responsibility. Their messages continue to offer to "work with me," as if trust hadn't already been fundamentally broken. The suggestion that we could move forward without meaningful accountability is not only tone-deaf--it's emblematic of their broader approach: surface-level reassurances with no substantive ownership. I requested a 75% refund--what I believe to be a fair reflection of two programs that were misaligned, mishandled, and harmful. In response, they offered 25% as a "gesture of goodwill." I even offered to allow them to retain the remaining 25% as partial compensation for housing, but the core issues--misuse of tools, failure to communicate illness, disregard for stated preferences, and lack of transparency--were never properly addressed. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this facility. If you're seeking dog training rooted in compassion, trust, and professionalism, I urge you to ask direct questions, demand written clarity at every step, and trust your instincts. We recently completed Ridgeside K9's 3-week board and train program with Brandi and Perry for our 2 1/2-year-old American Bully, Goose, and the results are remarkable! As first-time dog owners, we adopted Goose, a rescue with no prior socialization, who was nervous and reactive--springing and yapping at other dogs and wary of children. She also clashed with our family's Rottweiler, making management a challenge. Brandi and Perry's expertise, professionalism, and genuine care for Goose shone through, giving us confidence to handle her reactivity and family dog conflicts. Dropped off my 3 year old small dog (10 lbs) for a short overnighter to see how he would do for future longer vacation stays and (was hoping) some training in the near future. He was there for 23 hours (Saturday to Sunday) and I was charged for two days -- $120. Nothing on the website when I made the reservation indicated that they charge by "calendar days" as does every other kennel I've ever used in decades of dog ownership. Sadly, this will cost them hundreds of dollars of future revenue I would have spent on boarding (we travel a lot) and training. Ridiculous, short-sighted business practice and their loss. read more

I didn't feel like they were organized, ask several questions and received different answers. I was told he was going to be matched to a group of dogs for playtime with his characteristics. So when I picked him up I was told he got a little aggressive with one of the dogs. He is a five month old German Shepherd, playful, friendly, no aggressiveness. Also when I picked him up they couldn't find his bed and brought me the cover without the foam and said they had washed it, no explanation. He was only there three nights. I never received a call that they found the blanket I sent with him however, the foam was found for bed covering. He also had brown discharge from both eyes which cleared up after a couple days . My wife and I sent Blackjack, our one-year-old GSD, to a three-week board and train with Ridgeside K9 in Winchester. We are very happy with the results. Prior to his training, Blackjack was difficult to control, especially outside the house. After his training, his behavior has improved a thousand percent. He is so obedient and it's easy to take him on walks. He sits, stays, and comes when we call him. All of this is thanks to Brandi and Perry, who patiently worked so much with him and with us. On the first day of training, Brandi visited with us and got to know Blackjack at our house. Throughout the 3 weeks, she sent daily updates and photos. On the last day of training, Perry came to our house and spent over 5 hours teaching us to use the e-collar and then walking with us and Blackjack. The next day we still had a lot of questions, so Brandi and Perry both returned for another very long session, making sure to practice walking with Blackjack during the evening when lots of other dogs were out in the neighborhood. Blackjack did great, and Brandi and Perry patiently answered all our questions. It's been more than a week since then, Blackjack has been great. Brandi has reached out several times via text just to check in and see how things are going. We're so glad to have him back, and we're very grateful Brandi and Perry for taking such good care of our dog, and of us. Throughout the entire process they communicated constantly. The daily updates and many photos kept us informed and allowed us to see the progress that Blackjack was making. My only suggestion for improvement is about Ridgeside K9 itself. I felt that communication from their Winchester office could have been better. I had to ask several times before they sent me the "Agreement", which spells out expectations. Even after receiving it, I did not feel like I had a good understanding of what to expect until I began communicating directly with Brandi and Perry. I feel lucky that Ridgeside assigned us them as Blackjack's trainers. I highly recommend Brandi and Perry to any dog owner who loves their animal but struggles with obedience like we did. Multiple front desk staff have told me she's non-stop all day (which I totally can see) and she falls asleep in the car on the way home. She's always clean and happy and she doesn't love all guests at home but she just loves the staff there. Barney's Third Great Training Experience at Ridgeside K9 Barney recently completed Ridgeside's first ever, Adventure Dog Board and Train Program with Shannon, one of Ridgeside's outstanding trainers. We are extremely pleased with the results. Barney, a 19-month-old Bernedoodle, previously attended two Board and Train sessions with Shannon when he was approximately six months old, and 1-year old respectively. We noticed a marked level of improvement in Barney's obedience and maturity with each training and boarding iteration. We recently had to travel for 3-weeks, and Shannon worked with us to devise a personalized training curriculum for Barney. Our goal was to build upon his current outstanding level of training while exposing and teaching him new and challenging activities. The result was the development of Ridgeside's Adventure Dog Board and Train Program. During Barney's adventure training, he learned to swim for the first time and retrieve in the water and he performed agility training while learning to successfully negotiate jumps, tunnels, and other obstacles. Barney also learned Scent Detection and by the time we picked him up he was very proficient (and quite proud) at correctly alerting to a box containing a target scent from up to five other boxes placed at various locations in a room. His alert response was to immediately sit upon discovering the box with the objective scent and to face Shannon. Shannon kept us updated with photos and texts on Barney's progress throughout his Adventure Dog Board and Train experience. So I got a new puppy that was supposed to only be 40 pounds. We already had an adult dog who was 20 pounds so I thought it would be a good fit for a few months later he was 80 pounds. I've only had adult large animals, but never puppies. Jake was a bit much for me to handle, and he never let pooches have a moment of peace. I was also worried due to his size that he could scare people. He had a ton of energy and we were not able to handle him well. So I looked around for trainers and found in Ridgeline I was nervous about spending so much money and I knew day programs would not be good for him, but it was either training or I had to rehome. Jake went and stayed with Ariel for two weeks. Every day I received pictures and comments as to what he was up to. I received solid information which I had to read through before sending him so I knew what type of training he was getting. when he came home, I also received several hours of training because I needed it! Lol I got a free E collar with it, which helps for me and him to know what we are talking about. He is very happy because he wants to please and now he can do that successfully. I love the color a lot because it is waterproof and it has a flashlight option so I could turn it on in the dark. I was a little worried about the E collar, but Ariel made us all feel what it was that he was feeling. I couldn't feel it. Neither could my son! Jake is just very sensitive and I really never have to use a correction on him. Ariel did an amazing job and even months later I can text her and ask her questions and she responds in a timely manner. I could not recommend Ariel enough. She has a huge résumé in training and she truly loves the animals that she has. I cannot thank Ariel enough because the last thing I ever wanted to do was to have to rehome him and I never ever wanted him to hurt somebody accidentally because of his size. They did such a great job with her, and when it was time for her to come home they brought her to me and Perry spent 4 hours going over everything with me, going on a walk with us to reinforce the training, and made sure I was happy with it. We've loved Ridgeside K9! Our dog does the doggie daycare a few days a week there while I'm at work. We also put him through a 2 week board-and-train with them which was 100% worth the money. He was a super wild puppy that we couldn't control before his training with Ridgeside and now he's a very well behaved, super chill dog - he still has a lot of energy so that hasn't gone away, but he's no longer biting our kids and furniture and jumping all over people. I have a special case of a dog to say the least. He was a rescue who was neglected in a kennel for the first 4 years of his life and is now scared of everything. Had him a year and he is just starting to warm up and act like a dog. For 3 week board and train review: Wow, where to even begin! Let's start with our one-year-old Great Dane, Takoda. He is absolutely the sweetest dog with the best intentions but the worst execution. Poor guy doesn't know his size. He would constantly lunge, pull, and jump for excitement and to greet others. He loves people and animals and of course that came at a cost whenever he saw them coming his way. We went to various training classes, hired a private trainer, and to no avail he kept pulling, lunging, jumping, and reacting to everything he saw in the world that excited him. As he got bigger, the liability got bigger. We were at our whits end and could only walk him at night or deep in the woods knowing no one would be around to distract him. We went on a hunt for the right board and train group, that we knew we could trust with everything. We searched high and low on Facebook, Google, Yelp, and even Instagram, and boom Ridgeside K9 popped up. It was a no-brainer. We were paired with Brittney Pelletier and aside from being a bada** Combat Medic Veteran, she has the sweetest heart and held a special place for Takoda while she trained him for three weeks. He left a little hormonal teenager and came back a calm and collected gentleman. She gave us back our freedom to walk around the neighborhood, with crazy reactive Corgis and labs. He once used to be the neighborhood pest, and now he's the neighborhood pest control, walking by our side in a heel, without a peep or reaction, minding his own business, happy as a clam. Brittney spent four hours with us going through ALL that she had trained him on to ensure WE were being trained as well. It takes two to make this work. Training the dog and training us. She did both exceptionally. We even went on a walk around the neighborhood in the frigid cold temperatures (at night!) without any reservations, she was a trooper and kept charging on, while my partner and I were icicles. 3-week board and train review: It has been two months since our three-year-old German Shepherd finished her Ridgeside K9 3-week board and train program, and she is definitely the smartest dog in the neighborhood! We were concerned about sending her; she is a homebody and a little on the nervous side; but she did great. We had photos from her trainer every day so we could see what he was working on with her, and he was available by email, text or phone for any questions we may have had. We work with her each day to reinforce the commands she learned, and she completes them even if she is out in new settings or if other dogs or people are around. Unfortunately I did not have a good experience with my trainer for multiple reasons. The daily updates I received were nothing more than a picture with a few words. I felt like my trainer was overwhelmed with training multiple dogs while juggling personal issues. He was also not helpful with providing advice when training was over. I know there are other trainers at Ridgeside that are great, unfortunately I just didn't experience that. read more
