First, if I had realised that the Food Standards' Agency had rated the place as a "2", then I perhaps wouldn't have gone. Friends of ours keep rating the place, which is slightly cheaper than the Redolence Spice on Unicorn Hill. Right, deal with the positives: Extremely friendly and attentive staff and good with our kids. The place place had quite a number of full tables, but they accommodated us very quickly. The wine was reasonably priced for a restaurant. I'll just deal with my meal first: Starter: Tetul Mix, and I asked for some fried onions, and these were added, and extremely tasty dish. I wanted to go for the Chicken Tikka Rezella, however I didn't want the bhindi. I was persuaded, by the waiter, to try the Chicken Tikka Naga Shiri. I asked if it had onions and peppers, as I am not a "just a sauce with meat" person. I was assured it did. What I wasn't expecting was the onions and peppers to have them puréed. My first bite into the chicken revealed it to be either overcooked, or old and cooked. It was tough. I battled through. I asked the waiter if the chicken was fresh, or frozen chicken defrosted and then cooked. He assured me it was fresh. My son's meal (Chicken Tikka Chasni) wasn't a lot better, and the sauce just bounced off the meat; another sign that we are dealing with previously frozen meat, and that the meat had been boiled in a large pot (possibly) with turmeric to give it the tikka look. My wife was disappointed with her Chicken Tikka Madra too. My daughter's Shahi Malai had a very unusual sauce in the middle. They didn't do draught cobra, so had the large bottles. I think we all agreed that the starters were good and tasty. Total cost: £80. Unfortunately, we have to say we will not return; my friends will still go due the cheaper price. Redolence Spice is about £1.50 per main meal more expensive, but we know they use fresh produce, not bags of frozen meat purchased from the Chinese market in Birmingham. Plus they have a "5" from the Food Standards' Agency. Also note that the only place to park nearby is the pay and display car park at the Redditch railway station.

They did accommodate half portions for the children. This was a combined treat for my wife, and my children had never been before. They have won an award, but I hear that with a lot of these awards they have to pay to enter. You'd have to investigate to see how good that award is as a Muslin friend ignores any of these. My wife said that they appeared to be resting on their laurels and relying upon their past reputation. I guess we won't be returning. What is wrong now: 1. The size of the meat with the dishes is small. None of us were impressed with the main courses. 2. Asked for lime pickle, and had to ask again, because it wan't brought to the table. 3. I asked for red and green peppers to be added to my dish; they forgot. 4. As it was my wife's birthday, I asked for them to put a bottle of champagne on ice. This wasn't done, and was served at the wrong temperature. In fact the wine was served colder than the champagne. 5. They weren't very attentive, and didn't notice that we need more drinks, I had to keep calling them over. The good: I and my two children orderd the garlic mussles, they were very nice. Others enjoyed their starters. The decor is very good, and really llooks fresh. Previous Visit Dec 2008 Yes, very good cuisine, a varied selection. The noise of the place lets it down a bit. I don't think I have done full justice here. Although I know the original owners have sold the place. Nevertheless, what I liked was the variety of the menu. I tend to have the following main course, words from their website: KARAHI MAHARAJA A north Indian household favourite, diced chicken pieces curried in thick but smooth gravy, cooked on the spicy side with onions, paprika and coriander. Served on a cast iron wok, a dish that has stood the taste of time. Really tasty, a place offering something different, by the way of flavours.

My wife and I had the Chicken Masala, a chicken curry dish, a cauliflower potato veggie, and a coconut and almond naan- Peshwari Naan. And it was all excellent. Give this restaurant a chance. They have friendly, great service with delicious food. It was a welcome change from the "typical" English food that we had eaten while in London.

Exactly the same coloured sauce, which was quite watery. The pathias were bland, the aachari was equally bland. There were two chunks in the latter which seem to be lime, but with a hard inner kernel, as if it was a nut, which covered the pickling spice for the dish. The Pathia is a Persian dish and should be: hot, sweet, and sour, with the use of chillies and tamarind. The Aachari Chicken Curry is an Indian chicken curry flavoured with pickling spices (achar masala). Not very evident. Achari Chicken recipe uses some spices which are also used to make an achaar and the base of this curry is made of tomato and yogurt. Not evident. The chicken was awful. Clearly cooked from a frozen chicken breast originally, as what ever it had been marinated in (if at all) had not penetrated. Invariably this is the sign of excessive water from frozen meat. The meat was overcooked and difficult to bite into, and was more of a crunch. The only plus point about the chicken was that they were good sized chunks as opposed to the ones encountered at, for example, the Nepalese restaurant in Studley.

I chose the Hozor Ki Pasandwalla Murghi because I wanted to try to pronounce it, and it's one of Oli's favorites. It's thinner sauce with nice heat and a good amount of peppers, onions, and tomatoes. He chose the Chicken Laknavi, and Jane chose the Chicken Pasanda. Everything was nicely spiced - heat but still flavor. Portions were generous - we probably only needed half as much, but we couldn't resist all the flavors. We were treated to a drink afterwards with our bill, and Bailey's was a perfect digestif with the chocolate. On our way out, we were given a 2019 calendar as a holiday present. I'm looking forward to another delicious and friendly meal when I'm back in Oxford!
