Would not recommend at all. They were to remove our old furnace and then put a new system in the attic. Rightaway, they made a complete mess. When I complained the owner aggressively defended his crew. Opposite of the customer is always right. They specifically agreed to put the new unit where I wanted it in the attic, I got NOTHING of the kind. They just stuck where it was easiest/quickest for them. When I balked, THE OWNER'S snap reply was that the person representing him at the time was no longer with them. Now it is almost impossible to access the furnace. They ran the furnace exhaust pipe to a completely different roof vent, again, one that was easier. The FILTER HOUSING was BOTCHED - they put in using sheet larger head metal screws that PROTRUDED INTO THE FILTER HOUSING such that the replaceable pleated filter's frame was crushed. An air diverter was put on the wall without using the new painted screws; instead they used fugly sheet metal screws AND screwed them in so tight the register doesn't set flat on the wall. DO NOT hire these guys. We hired Rick's when the heater quit. The problem it turned out was a previous owner installed an extra air filter outside the furnace and it was clogged. Before diagnosing the actual problem, the guy they sent tried re-wiring the thermostat, then had to re-re-wire it when he realized that wasn't the problem. The tech phoned home and had someone walk him through the repair. In the call, he noticed the second filter, removed it and "bingo" the furnace worked. So problem solved right? Not quite. For reasons unknown, the tech decided to use a screwdriver to pry the squirrel cage off the fan that cools the motor and broke it. He said it was no big deal and would return with a replacement. Two weeks and a phone call later, no replacement. The person I spoke to on the phone told me the heater was old and somehow they weren't responsible for breaking the squirrel cage. Now the furnace is really loud and it wasn't before. I just received a $334.00 bill from them. Look elsewhere for reliable service. read more

We had a problem with the thermostat that wasn't changed when our heater was changed this summer by a different company (Mike's - perhaps the same "Mike" who has left a bad review on this page?). Not only did Eric install a new digital thermostat, but he noticed some of the shoddy workmanship (loose wire, heater loose from the wall) done by the other company and took the time to fix it. Eric was friendly and definitely went above and beyond. Perfect customer service with a smile (behind his mask!). This is the first time that a tradesperson who is a man hasn't talked down to me and this was actually a positive experience. read more

An old white guy with glasses and graying hair who works there is the most unprofessional and vile person, he was incredibly rude and elitist when telling me what I "need" to do and when I asked further questions he became extremely condescending and dismissive. Our furnace quit in the middle of the night on a Sunday. On Mon morning I called several local heating & a/c services and Rick's was able to confirm a 9am appointment for Weds. All of the others couldn't help me until Thurs or later. Their technician Carlos showed up on time and after patiently listening to my explanation of the system failure he quickly got to work, diagnosed the problem, retrieved the part from his truck, installed it and was finished in 30 min. All the while he explained what he was doing & confirmed that our furnace was in very good condition. I would recomnend Rick's to anyone in need of furnace repair. read more

I needed (1) a repair of my whole-house fan (symptoms indicated a bad starter capacitor), and (2) to have some heating ducts rerouted to improve access to the attic. Dave Bickel of Bickel's Maintenance & Refrigeration quoted over $1000 to replace all of the ducts in my attic with flexible ducts. He would not give me a definite quote for fixing the fan. A few months later, I got a quote from DJ of Rick's Heating and Air Conditioning. He quoted me $400 for both items, proposing to solve the attic access problem by replacing two lengths of duct that were blocking access, and leaving the remaining ducts as is. This was a practical solution that fitted my budget, so I gave him the job. The work was very professional, and I'm satisfied. read more

DJ was very responsive to my initial call about a malfunctioning furnace. I quickly obtained a diagnostic appointment and the technician showed up shortly afterwards--something that other HVAC outfits in the area have forgotten how to do. He diagnosed the problem and since I needed a new furnace, I was *not charged* for the initial visit--how's that for customer service! By the next business day, DJ--who is refreshingly straight-shooting and very accommodating-- provided me with a very reasonable estimate for a new furnace with installation (and warranty on the unit and labor). Daniel, the technician, showed up and installed the new furnace promptly, doing an excellent job especially with the sleeve and vent assembly. He was courteous, quick, and cleaned up afterwards. We had Rick's H&AC install a new central furnace and ducting at our home in Goleta two and a half years ago. They were prompt, reasonably priced, and did a fantastic job. This will be our third winter using the two-stage heater they installed and we are very pleased. It is still quiet, efficient, and effective. Their vent placement was spot on too. No areas too hot or cool. We're considering having them install AC now if the hot summers continue. read more

In the dead of winter, I contacted Rick's about an estimate for a new furnace (ours wasn't working). A representative came out and made an assessment. He said that I needed to authorize the work and that he would email me the form. When the form didn't arrive for three days, I called--and it was sent. I was told that someone would get back to me that day to schedule the work. No one ever called. I called the next morning and was told that someone would get back to me THAT day. No one called. When this happened a third time, I cancelled. Unreliable and unresponsive. If they were too busy, they should have said so. read more

Our heater failed to go on this morning, I called Ricks @ 8:00 am and a technician was at my house by 8:30 am. He diagnosed a blown fuse on the circuit board, replaced it and heater is back up and running! The technician was polite and explained how the system operated. If I could give 0 stars, I would. Avoid DJ at all cost. We mistakenly used him TWICE. The first time he over-charged us and we went round and round. Then a couple of years later our general wanted to use DJ and we reluctantly agreed. Well, big surprise, we failed the HERS test. He sent a crew to repair their shoddy work and we had a second test that passed inspection. When we got the bill from DJ, upon advice from our general, we paid the full amount minus $550 for the second HERS test. Seems fair, right? I mean should we pay for 10 tests if his work fails inspection? So, we sent the payment with an explanation and asked that he call us. We called numerous times. No response. Instead, we get a bill and a threat to take us to small claims court?! Say what? No return phone call, no negotiating? After $40,000 worth of work that we paid for? We call again: Nothing, but a new bill, plus a late charge and a threat to charge us $75 for the small claims fee. Interesting business model: shoddy work, overcharge your customers, don't respond to them and then threaten to sue. Take my advice and avoid Rick's Heating and Air Conditioning. UPDATE: AUGUST 2017: We go to sell our house (the first one that DJ worked on) and it, too, failed the HERS test. We had to spend $2,000 with another contractor to correct the work he did and close out the permit, so we could sell the house. NIGHTMARE EXPERIENCE! read more
