I decided to take a stroll around the Richmond Beach Community Park today after activating my new King County Library System (KCLS) library card at the Richmond Beach Library and requesting a surprise bag in the theme of adult non fiction - animal books. As I waited for the librarians to put the bag together I walked around the park. It was a lucky day and today the park had something called a storywalk. What is a storywalk? The cover and story pages of a children's book, 'the BEAR'S SONG' by Benjamin Chaud this time, were put on display one set of page(s) at a time on signs along the outermost walking trail of the park. Each sign would contain the next page(s) of the story so you could read the story as you made your way around the park. It was an illustrated book, so the visuals from the book were included which made the experience even more engaging. I greatly enjoyed the story and the walk, the storywalk.
In the past I have come to this park just for fun on my own, with family, and with friends. There is a playground which is nice for younger kids. Picnic tables and benches provide spaces to converse or sit and read a good book or comic.
Trails, tennis courts, and a grassy field provide additional active options. Be it kicking a soccer ball around with friends, doing lunges as a cool down or warm up, running around the park, or playing a game of singles or doubles tennis - there are numerous ways to be active here. One of my more common park uses of recent is walking the multiple flights of stairs that lead to the intersection of NW 196th St, 23rd Ave NW, and NW 194th Pl. My mom and I like to add a little elevation gain and distance to some of our walks by climbing the stairs and walking around the trails in the park. read more
