For the past five years, I have been walking around with symptoms like chronic fatigue and constipation, heavy periods, aching muscles, slow word recall and mental function, and more unpleasant physical symptoms. And for five years, despite that I did everything I could to track and document my progressively worse symptoms, I was told repeatedly by Kaiser Permanente staff that I could just be depressed because my thyroid work up results fell in the "normal range". What I did not realize is that Kaiser is known to use a completely outdated (and conservative) range for "normal" thyroid function. They are clearly operating to treat only emergency case scenarios (cases that would not leave them liable). They leave those who recognize that their thyroids are slowly failing to fend for themselves...until it's too late, of course. Then they are willing to treat.
I was not willing to be told repeatedly that I must be depressed. Although my energy levels had plummeted over the years and my mental performance and lethargy were depressing, I did not consider myself a clinically depressed person. I decided to take matters into my own hands. My sister, Kate, who also has hypothyroidism (yes, I even told Kaiser it runs heavily in my family!), first discovered Dr.Shames, a nationally renown thyroid specialist, in the Marin county area. She was very impressed by his knowledge about endocrinology, and considered him an expert on the thyroid. Additionally, contrary to some of our experiences with more traditional healthcare doctors, Dr. Shames actually takes the time to talk to his patients, hear their story and medical history, taking into account THEIR observations and understanding of THEIR bodies.
My sister, Kate, could not have been more correct. Dr. Shames has been all of the above and more! He not only took the time to hear my story, but he worked with me to find a plan that worked for my needs and lifestyle. As a bonus, he is very affable and makes me feel like I am speaking with an old friend every time I have an appointment. Since Dr. Shames treated me in January, I feel like I have gained my life back in a certain sense. I have my old energy back, I no longer wake up with aching muscles, my periods are more moderate, and I don't have to spend my time worrying about whether or not I will feel good on any given day. Thank you to Dr. Shames and his staff for your expertise, excellent customer service, and willingness to do what doctors are supposed to do---HEAL OTHERS!
