Let me start by saying--I hate going to the dentist. It takes more mental preparation than running…read morea marathon. I need to hype myself up just to book the appointment, and then double that to actually show up. But, a friend recommended Derksen Dentistry, and after some extensive (read: borderline obsessive) research, I decided to take the plunge. I needed an advanced root canal and figured, why not throw in a cleaning while I'm at it? The first thing that set the tone was my call to Susan. She was so calming and reassuring that I felt like I was calling a life coach, not a dentist's office. She promised me they'd make my visit as relaxing as possible, which is a tall order when you're about to face down a drill and some sharp objects in your mouth. When I arrived, I was promptly greeted (on time, too, which felt like an anomaly in itself). The assistant was super helpful, constantly checking in with me during the x-rays, which was nice since I was pretty sure my mouth was about to go on strike from all the poking. Then came Dr. Derksen. Now, I'm not the type to buy into "auras" or anything, but this guy had an aura of, "Hey, I've got this. You can relax." I felt it. He triple-checked to make sure I was completely numb before starting the root canal--because apparently, "feeling your teeth getting drilled" is not on anyone's bucket list. The whole process went smoothly, and to my surprise, I didn't leave feeling like I'd just fought a battle with a power tool. What really sealed the deal was that they followed up the next day to check on me. I mean, where else do you get a dentist who cares enough to make sure you're not secretly plotting your revenge on him for the trauma? Long story short, I walked out of Derksen Dentistry with all my teeth intact and a new, surprisingly positive outlook on dental visits. Dr. Derksen, you've earned a lifetime patient... just maybe not a lifetime of root canals, please.

The first couple weeks were uncomfortable after pulling and putting my temporary teeth in, but after that everything went smoothly. Very compassionate and extremely gentle. Always asking if i was comfortable or if i needed anything. If i had questions I would call and get an answer immediately. So many good things to say about them. Their office was very clean. Both practice in the office next door to the Red Cross and I must say that I haven't had better dentists. First of all, Scott is a hottie, and that is a perfectly fine reason to go see your dentist. :-) Above and beyond that, the hygenists are thorough and they give you tips about how you should take care of your teeth better (rather than just saying you need to brush or floss more) and they provide you with tools you may need to do that (i have these dental sticks that i absolutely hate) My dentist also takes care of bite issues, headache problems, and he gives a little temple massage during an examination that makes being in that God Awful chair just slightly more enjoyable. If you need a dentist, I highly recommend either Scott or his father Larry.

I had seen Dr. Valley for many years and thought so well of him that I even continued to drive…read morethere after I had moved an hour away. This is why I felt so betrayed when his associate, Dr. Baker, supposedly a "pediatric dentist" burst into the exam room and launched a violent verbal assault at my teenage daughter for unexplained reasons. He screamed at her at the top of his lungs "Are you a BABY?!? You need your MOMMY in here with you?!? I have 4 year old patients who are less scared than YOU!". It went on and on. She was sobbing and shaking and he was so loud that the receptionist came running. I still can't comprehend what triggered this, I guess he was personally offended that she was very anxious and scared. I had told the receptionist that she was not only very anxious/dealing with PTSD from prior difficult medical experiences, but that she was also very self-conscious and ashamed because of this, so she would cope best if they just go on with things and don't don't draw any extra attention to it. I don't know what she then said to HIM or what he heard in response, but his response was the most unhinged and unprofessional behavior I have ever witnessed. The receptionists and hygienists were mortified and apologized profusely for his behavior. Office manager (Dr. Valley's wife) offered a bland, profesionally distanced bit of nothing. Dr. Valley said nothing, did nothing, never called us for any kind of a debriefing, apology or to check on my daughter. I expected more from him. His silence told me all I need to know. The next dentist we saw reviewed the records, and their professional opinion was that what they were calling cavities were not, and she did not need the fillings.
