I had my dealing with "TMJ" for almost a decade. Various doctors, thousands of dollars wasted and fixes that never worked until I met Dr. Hirschinger. He's worth every single penny, I wish I would have met him at the beginning of my journey. He had a next step for everything we tried. Extremely nice and explained everything. My years of trying to relieve pain has finally come to an end! Thank you again for your help. Highly highly recommend to anyone on the fence. read more

Had an appointment today with this doctor and it was truly one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a doctor. First off he was ignorant of anything I was telling him. I have issues with my neck and back and had some problems with my face. Before his exam he questioned me and went over his list of past meds and issues etc. through his questions his attitude seemed rude and just thought he knew it all. I had told him I couldn't wear my retainer due to severe neck issues that I have and he proceeded to make me wear the retainer and I kept telling him my neck hurts and gets very tight with it but he responded with I don't buy it you have to wear it. After 5 minutes I took it off and was in more neck spasms than before mind you I came to his office with 10/10 neck pain and my neck was In spasms through his whole inspection. He proceeded to check my jaw and everything he had to do which was your average check up of jaw and few tests. What really was upsetting about this doctor is he was questioning me about what I'm going to do in life and said and I quote "what would you do if your parents were in New York and you had to work". This was extremely unprofessional on his part to say that and made me very upset and my mom was crying as she was with me during this appointment. I deeply regret coming to this doctor as nothing positive had been done and it just emotionally put me in a bad state. I basically paid $800 for nothing he was more worried about my personal life then actually helping me with my pain. Rich should not even be called a doctor he is nosy, rude, and arrogant . He doesn't listen to anything I was telling him . He basically tells me he doesn't buy anything I'm telling him even though I'm in severe pain and he saw everything that was happening to me. Go see a different doctor Rich is not the one. Waste of my time and the 2 hour drive. read more

Amazing! Spent so much time with us and really helped my mom with a very conservative approach!

Dr. Hirschinger is amazing. He is so knowledgeable and explains things so clearly. We saw him for my daughter's persistent jaw pain. He gave her a thorough exam, answered all of our questions in terms we could understand and gave us a variety of treatment options. I can't recommend him highly enough! read more

After falling and striking my jaw, my bite was out of alignment, so I couldn't chew. In around 15 minutes, after a bunch of opening/closing for measurements then some directed stretching, Dr. Hirschinger had my bite lining up! A simple at-home stretch had me back to normal within a couple of days. After making me better, Dr. Hirschinger educated me with photos of jaw musculature to explain what he had done. Amazing and greatly appreciated! read more

You won't find better, you just won't. Trust me. After so many specialists, and what felt like such a complicated array of pain and symptoms, I finally started to find pain relief thanks to Dr. Hirschinger's expertise. He takes his time with you, dissects all the info, all the possible solutions (Trigger Point Injections, Botox, etc) and is beyond knowledgeable. Nerve/Muscle pain, TMJ, neck pain, back pain, face pain, headaches/migraines... he will help you. I truly believe there's no one better. read more

I had an amazing experience with Dr. Hirschinger. I highly recommend meeting with him. He is a compassionate and knowledgeable doctor who helped me a lot. I have been having a lot of TMJ pain lately and I started looking into TMJ specialists. I've been to chiropractors, ENTs, and physical therapists before, but never a specialist. I was first impressed by how thorough the new patient form was. When I went in for an appointment, I felt that he understood my problems more than anyone else I've seen. He taught me a lot about the problems I was having and potential options for me. I was really happy with the advice. I really felt that he cared about me and that was his biggest priority, not making money. He gave me all of the options and thoroughly explained pricing so I could make the best decision for me. Something big that I was not aware of before is, despite being diagnosed with "TMJD" by multiple doctors, my joint was actually perfectly fine. Instead, I have a muscle problem where the muscles in my face are clenched too tight and cause a lot of pain. The treatments he gave me have helped me with my symptoms so much, it is incredible. If you have "TMJ", head pain, neck pain, etc. you should DEFINITELY consider going to Dr. Hirschinger. I trust him completely when it comes to my head pain problems. read more

For several months of dealing with TMJ related pain, headaches, dizziness, pressure behind the eye and would be TMJ specialists, I met with Dr. Hirschinger. Dr. Hirschinger provided a very thorough assessment and with a menu of options to alleviate this. He is very knowledgeable, kind, and quick to answer follow up questions. I started to feel immediate releif in his office and will continue to follow through on the treatment plan. With Dr.Hirschinger, I feel hopeful and grateful to get back to feeling normal again! read more

Highly recommend if you've got apnea, TMJ, or any other facial pain. Dr. Hirschinger met me in his office on his day off bc that was as the only time I had available. Which out of the box was as just a very kind thing to do. I'm a 64 year old woman with 3 grown children so I have a doctor for every part of my body and have run the gamut of pediatricians and pediatric specialists. Dr. Hirschinger is by far the BEST DOCTOR I'VE EVER BEEN TO! He asks many questions and listens attentively. He takes his time to really understand the patient's problem and severity and location of the pain. He believed me, unlike my dentist who called me "psychotic". And after a thorough examination he came up with a solution for me, tailored to ME. He didn't just throw pain meds at me and wish me luck. He didn't hurry through our appointment so he could move on to the next patient. He has a lovely and understanding bedside manor and some mad skills and training. read more

Simply put, Dr. Rich is the best! He is extremely thorough and generous with his time. My first appointment lasted at least 2 hours (probably closer to 3). He took an extremely detailed history of my chronic migraines and thoroughly examined me to identify any possible triggers. Then we spent a good amount of time going over what my options for treatment were. He has also gone way above and beyond for me, spending hours of his own time getting new and innovative medicines approved by my insurance, so that I can try them right away. He really knows his stuff, and he really cares about his patients, so if you suffer from chronic head pain, I definitely recommend that you go see Dr. Rich. read more

I have ridden with Dr. Rich many times on the bike never knew he was a Orofacial pain and headache doctor. I was involved in a bike vs. Auto accident and have had chronic neck pain and jaw and facial pain aswell as intense headaches. The headaches can be so bad I just hide in dark rooms because nothing helps make them go away. I truly believed there was absolutely no way that they would ever go away so I just suffered through. My friend Dr. Hirschinger sent me a message one day asking me if I would consider giving him the chance to help by filling out one of his patient forms where I wrote everything that happens down headache wise. He said if he felt he could help he would. I spent a day filling that form out getting every piece of info I could remember in. I thought where I was feeling headaches and how they were acting was all in my head and that he was going to tell me like each other doctor I have seen that its all in my head stop faking and get on with it. Went in to see doctor Hirschinger and I have my SD (Service Dog) with me he is extremely dog friendly but since I have a SD there always allowed but he loves seeing my girls Lucy and Shelby and giving them tons of love when they come on which is a huge relief some doctors get very nasty about the dogs but the doc is great with the furry critters. Anyways I go in and we spoke for a time about how the headaches act and where they hit and everything. He shows me a few graphs on the screen in front of the treatment chair. Where he says see this is where you are telling me your headaches are located and your pain is located hits a button another screen shows up and it shows well your headache is here and all the pain should be here and thats what your telling me so it isnt in your head you arent faking. Like OMG huge relief I aint crazy on that level thanks doc haha. He then hands me a piece of cork to stretch my jaw which I think started off on his scale at like 30 maybe and I could barely fit a chicken nugget in with forcing myself and causing major pain. Now I am at a 56 which I can easily fit a nice juicy piece of steak in with mild pain. Kept going in overtime and at first I was a critic he said he could get rid of my headaches and I was like no its chronic theres no way. You cant do anything. He replied with a calm well just give me a chance lets see what we can do. So I skeptically gave doctor Hirschinger a shot at getting me some much needed help. He puts me on a medication for the headaches and says lets make a appt at this date and make sure your on the med for atleast 6 weeks. Low and behold I am at home taking the med I didnt notice nor have a headache for a while. As a skeptic I am like nah I must not have noticed we went longer than a month on the med with no appt. I had one mild 10 minute headache but beyond that not a single one of the underlying one or two pound headaches that had been crippling me. I was shocked and in amazement. I was like the doc is going to love hearing this no headaches he did it. I go in and told him that and he was very happy about it as was I not having a headache they were painful and annoying as hell. Oh and as for scheduling its so easy and he has a system that has the appt time and date txts to your phone I think a week before a appt and the day of in the morning so cool and easy to help you remember I have major memory issues with this so having that system is amazing. Overall if your having headaches or Orofacial pain please please go to see Dr. Hirschinger if he can help he will. Thanks there Rich appreciating the relief each and every single day. read more

I found Dr. Hirschinger on Yelp after searching high and low for someone who specializes in TMJ pain and I am beyond happy that I discovered him! I have been a patient now for several months and am 100% cured of my chronic jaw pain. Prior to becoming a patient my TMJ had become so bad that I could barely chew and was even struggling to speak. Within 2 weeks of my first appointment I could notice a difference and immediately knew that I had found the right doctor for me. Dr. Hirschinger is beyond caring, professional, and truly goes above and beyond for his patients. He takes time to answer every question, responds to emails if follow-up is needed, but also emphasizes the importance of the patient doing their part to get well as it is not just a one way street. It really helped me to hear this as the responsibility of wearing my night guard, changing my diet, and doing my jaw stretches was all ON ME because at the end of the day I would not be able to get well if I did not follow-through. I cannot recommend Dr. Hirschinger highly enough and am lucky to call myself a patient. read more

After almost a year of having a left-sided 24/7 headache, I was referred to Dr. Hirschinger by another doctor. I didn't have a lot of hope that I was ever going to be free of the pain when I walked into his office. I was wrong, thankfully! Dr. Hirschinger spent a lot of time with me, asking about past treatments, which included everything from acupuncture to neurologists, where I received pain medications that left me feeling sick on top of the pain I was having. Dr. Hirschinger was the eighth doctor I had seen and he gave me a very thorough exam, listened to me, and I began to have a glimmer of hope that I would possibly get the pain free life that I was seeking. After giving me trigger point shots in my head I walked out of his office 100% pain free for the first time after being in pain for nine months solid. He is what all doctors should be, knowledgeable, a listener, compassionate and he has a great bedside manner. Instead of shrugging his shoulders saying he did not know what to do, which I had received from some doctors, he gave me answers and quite literally, my life back! He is a hero in my eyes and I would not hesitate one bit to recommend him to friends and family. I can't thank him enough for what he has done for me. Anyone who has been in chronic pain will understand the desperation felt and the hope that is lost that things will ever get better. Dr. Hirschinger gave me that hope and I am well on my way back into the world of the living! Bonnie Ventura, CA read more

After getting two of my wisdom teeth removed, I started to experience incredible amounts of shooting pain in right jaw, neck, and head. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced and no amount of pain medication would offer relief. I saw two oral surgeons who both diagnosed me with trigeminal neuralgia, which is a potentially lifelong condition of intense crippling pain. I would describe my pain as a constant migraine and shattered, broken jaw. For weeks, I couldn't open my mouth, couldn't work, couldn't sleep, was bed ridden, could only eat smoothies and soup, and thought my life as I knew it was over... I'm a healthy 29 year old male and was terrified. I was referred to orofacial pain specialists at USC and UCLA, and was shocked and disappointed that it would take months to get an appointment. Also, these doctors were charging up to $400 for a consult. So I went to google, and thank god I found Dr. Hirschinger. His website was informative, he seemed personable, and after speaking to Wendy, his super nice secretary, I had an appointment within two days!!! The other doctors only allowed for a 1 hour appointment, but Wendy explained that Dr Hirschinger would need to give me a full two hour examination. I also filled out a detailed questionnaire about my history and condition. When I met Dr Hirschinger, he had already gone over my information and clearly knew my background without jumping to conclusions about my diagnosis. His examination nearly ruled out trigeminal neuralgia entirely, although he insisted that only time would tell. It was obvious his approach to my diagnosis was unbiased and purely scientific. The oral surgeons had mistakenly put me on gabapentin, and Dr Hirschinger stopped the treatment immediately. He treated me for myalgia, basically chronically tightened muscles, and I saw IMMEDIATE improvement in my condition. Muscle relaxers, steroids, and simple mouth stretches with a wine bottle cork really did the trick. Within two days I doubled the amount I could open my mouth, I could sleep, and started to get my life back!!! Fast forward to a month after seeing Dr Hirschinger: I was back to full time work, no pain at all, and could eat normal food without any issues. His diagnosis and treatment were exactly what I needed. His professionalism couldn't have been better. He made me feel at ease and hopeful, and I am so thankful for his help. He has my full endorsement as a truly great orofacial pain specialist; he is talented and dedicated. read more

It's been about 5 months since I walked out of Dr. Hirschinger's office and I have been pain free ever since- after ONE appointment! I had spent over a year and 6k with a "TMJ specialist" at TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre in Thousand Oaks only to be left with an open bite, horrible migraines, and more pain than I came in with. They had made me wear a 24 hr splint, an oversized night guard, made me coming 2/ a week to get laser and painful acupuncture only to tell me in the end that I needed Invisalign to complete the process (which they could give me a good deal on). Dr. Hirschinger told me all I needed was tension relief in my jaw and all of the other "treatment" I went through was a waste of time. Well, he was right! The Gentle Jaw might be the easiest treatment plan in the world and it has been SO effective! He gave me a stretching regiment, tips to avoid headaches and medication in case I absolutely need pain relief (which I haven't needed). My jaw has completely relaxed. My debilitating migraines are GONE. And I'm currently working with an orthodontist to fix my open bite without any jaw pain. I truly truly recommend Dr. Rich. He gave me a pain free life and I'm so grateful. read more

I am a dental professional, so I choose my specialists wisely. I went to Dr Hirschinger for treatment of my severe neck muscle aches and pain. He gave me trigger point injections in my neck. His technique was painless, quick, and immediately alleviated my sore, stiff muscles that I had been suffering with for months. The best part is, the pain has subsided now for several weeks and I have been able to regain the mobility and full range of motion of my head, allowing me to work comfortably again. It is a beautiful thing to wake up pain free and turn your head without hesitation! Dr Hirschinger is a hero in my eyes! read more

I was referred to Dr. Hirschinger from another Dr. for treatment of TMJ. I had previously had an arthroscopy which unfortunately had caused me to have limited opening following the surgery. Of the many doctors I had seen, Dr. Hirschinger spent the most time with me explaining my condition and helping me understand my treatment options. He went above and beyond in following up with me after I saw him, to see how I was doing. Dr. Hirschinger is a true advocate for his patients and I would certainly suggest him to anyone suffering from TMJ. read more

I was referred to Dr. Hirschinger because I had symptoms of TMJ. Dr. Hirschinger spent enough time with me to fully understand my symptoms and my rather complex history. His recommendations and follow up involved non-invasive and painless solutions to my symptoms. It is now only a few months later and I am pain free and symptom free. I strongly encourage you to see Dr, Hirschinger for your head, neck and jaw issues. I also encourage you to follow through with his initial non-invasive recommendations and you may be able to avoid further, more complex treatment. I wish all of my medical professionals were this thorough and had reasonable solutions to my other medical issues. Excellent doctor. read more

I was on a crazy goose chase trying to find a doctor who had a solution to my bite and jaw alignment issues that started after wearing an NTI device for TMJ. I was told I needed treatments ranging from 1 year of tongue therapy to braces, to jaw surgery followed by more braces. After the most thorough office visit I've ever had (2 1/2 hours!), Dr. Hirschinger not only ruled out these drastic options, but took an incredible about of time educating me and proving to me how these solutions were not even addressing the root cause of my situation. He put me on a sensible, pain free, surgery free, braces free plan. Everything he said just made good logical sense. He is the most honest and genuine doctor I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. If you are someone who has been given a night guard or TMJ device only to find out it changed your bite - run, do not walk, to Dr. Hirschinger! read more

Dr. Hirschinger is absolutely one of the most amazing doctors I have ever seen. I have visited multiple doctors to try to diagnose/cure my problem, of which none of them could even diagnose. I went to see Dr. Hirschinger, and he worked like magic. He is such a smart man and he really knows how to fix you and make you feel relief from your pain. I love Dr. Hirschinger, and if you are deciding which doctor to consult with, definitely go with Dr. Hirschinger. He really is amazing. I promise you, you will not regret it! read more

I first met Dr. Hirschinger at UCLA's Orofacial Pain Clinic. He always seemed genuinely concerned about me and my problem with my jaw. He truly helped me unlock the problem which has given me success in helping to eliminate my pain, at least it is not as often as it used to be. He gave me ideas, techniques, exercises to help me (as well as a night guard and medication when needed) and I am so much more aware. I can even tell when a headache is coming and can do things to eliminate it before it starts. THANK YOU SO MUCH DR. RICH!!! read more

When you are having the worst migraine of your life, and you are not sure if you should go to the hospital (that hasn't helped!) or shoot yourself in the head, have Dr. Hirschinger's number on your nightstand, under your triptans and ice-packs. If you suffer from Migraines, you will have a new life that you never knew you could have, if you are able to get into this doctor. He is a "boutique" expert, who does home visits in L.A. Dr. Hirschinger is at the VERY TOP of the food chain for all doctors related to head/face pain: this is WHAT HE DOES, and he does it well. I am a lifetime Migrainer - you may know the head-in-a-vice, hammering, intense, nausea: trying triptan after triptan, nasals, subliminal, acupuncture, accupressure/massage, chiropractor, neurologists, shall I go on? Focusing on myofascial pain, he knows absolutely the every thing there is to know in this specialty -- (he also diagnosed a severe jaw pain I had been living with for 20 years which every other doctor called "TMJ", but was actually this a condition called trigeminal neuralgia). His diagnostic skill is unparalleled - he is incisive, specific, clever, out-of-the-box. His migraine treatment is customized to you and brilliant. He has a variety of treatments. One time I went in, he gave me local, specific shots in my head/neck that knocked out my migraine INSTANTLY. The second time I met him, my husband called him and had him enter into my dark-curtains-closed bedroom, where I lay, with the vice-grip migraine. He gently came in and sat by my bed, quietly asking me simple, pointed questions, upon which he gave me an intense spray treatment (releasing a layer of the facial/neck/shoulder muscle pain) a shot in my leg, and left me (my husband) with instructions/treatments/info, that I had not heard before (after many specialists)! Oh yeah, and when he left, the migraine left with him. read more
