Rhode Island is a coffee shop in Burnley that was perhaps the first to try and raise the bar when it came to cafés in Burnley town centre. For a town that was used to greasy spoons and the drab and dull shopping centre café, Rhode Island offers a sleek and modern setting with a wide assortment of freshly brewed coffees, teas, lattes, hot chocolates and all the sort of frappe mocha offerings you'd expect from a café that clearly takes its inspiration from Starbucks and similar chains. Unfortunately, Rhode Island appears to have also taken its price structure from Starbucks and for a small town like Burnley, the cost of having a coffee and sandwich in Rhode Island is somewhat extortionate. But despite this, it seems to attract people in large numbers and is usually heaving with shoppers enjoying a brew and a relaxer. This means the queues can be long and I've even walked out before as there were no tables available and the café was heaving. On quieter occasions when I have stopped in, the coffee is fantastic and the food is certainly tasty but I think it's a little on the expensive side for an albeit posh, self-serve café. read more
