Inside, there is a ton of interesting stuff. It's a little late in the season today, so not as much produce, but they still had corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, and more. I finally made it out today, the last market of the season. One of the vendors told me that about…read morehalf of the vendors were absent, possibly due to it being the final day. Still, I had a good first-time visit. We checked out almost all of the booths and sampled several spots, settling on popcorn from Tasha's Carmel Corn. I purchased the Peanut Butter Cup, but I easily saw myself emptying my pockets to buy everything else I tasted. We stopped by Sarah's Sweets, where I tried various chocolates. The real winner to me was the coconut. Very sweet, but a dream for coconut fans. Another great spot was Allison's Challah, who sells Traditional Jewish Bread. It was flavored with honey and I can just see myself trying all kinds of combinations with it. Even though it was the final day of the season, I was delighted to learn that they will begin the "winter season" market, next door, next Thursday (Oct. 5)! Being the first one for the season, I'm sure it should have full attendance from the vendors so I'll be back and will let you know what I thought.

I have gone to Peter's farm market for a long time and have overlooked Reeb's (on the other side of road less the 1/4 of a mile north) for way too long. I will never go to any other farm market besides this one!!! I guess what makes it a little more quaint is that the actually farmer is the one running the store. I'm sure it's just because it's not harvest time but he's a nice guy who seems to work his tail off. I feel bad that I didn't get his name - I think it's important to get names!!

In fact, just this morning we walked down and bought some fresh-picked blackberries. By this afternoon we had made them into a delicious pie. I win. All that being said, the selection isn't all that it could be. Canal is located very close to a number of working farms. However, the market only boasts five fruit and veggie stands. The folks selling locally raised meat haven't been around lately. There is a great bread stand courtesy Great Harvest Bakery, but that's pretty corporate. There are a few too many stands with things like Tupperware and knick-knacks. The farmer's market is open every Saturday morning through mid-October. Until August 27, it's open on Wednesday nights too.

I was told about this family run farm out in Canal while Ana dinner gathering last week. I can even begin to express how to say it... GET HERE NOW! Sweet tomatoes the size of marbles. Some that were no bigger than a crabapple tree berry. Some the size of my palm. They sell 250+ varieties right here in central Ohio. Can you beat that? Amongst the other succulent tomatoes I bought, I got what resemble tiny tomatillos (in the night shade family); you have to tear away the thin "paper shell". They LITERALLY taste like tropical fruit juice. I kid you not. I met David today, and he's a friendly, knowledgeable gentleman. Him and the co-owner, Joe, sell at a few markets around town, so if you don't catch them at one of those, make the trek southeast. No really. Do it.

This place is the cutest. It's a pottery painting studio that's also a coffee shop. So you can…read morevisit just to grab a coffee or hot chocolate or tea, or you can visit to paint some pottery, or both! I highly recommend doing both. You should know, though: This place seems to get very busy on the weekends, and they do not take reservations. So if you want to beat the crowds, your best bet is to get there right when they open. If all of the painting tables are full, you will need to wait outside until someone leaves. That could be 10 minutes, which is what it was for us. Or, like the nice man who works there pointed out, it could be 30 minutes or more, because there is no time limit once you're at the painting tables, because the creative process can't be rushed. Fair enough. Once we got a table, we walked around the store and looked at all of the pottery options. They had bowls, plates, piggy banks, coasters, planters, trinkets and ornaments (these are seasonal). My kids picked out a truck piggy bank and a kitty ornament. Pottery pieces vary in price -- the ornament cost around $12, and the piggy bank cost $35. Next we made our way to the painting station, where we loaded up our pallets with paint. They recommend using three coats of paint for the brightest finish, but my kids, who are impatient like all children, only did one coat of paint and their pieces came out really well. After you're done painting, you leave your pieces on the table, pay for them at the register, and then Art & Clay on Main fires them and glosses them, and you pick them up about a week later. It is so cool to finally get your finished pieces. Ours really looked professionally done! While we were painting, we ordered some hot chocolate with whipped cream, and drank and painted at a leisurely pace. It was a nice and relaxing family activity, and my kids were really into it. I highly recommend dropping by Art & Clay on Main if you're in downtown Lancaster if you're looking for a fun and relaxing activity with your kids.
