Too expensive. Non negotiable stance. Unreasonably high prices. Not bulging from the high price.

Helix Landscape Construction - no grass, roundup sprayed here

    Helix Landscape Construction

    (26 reviews)

We are renovating our home in the South Bay. I decided it would be a good idea to start with the…read morelandscaping of the property, which was overgrown -- some of it looking like a jungle (no monkeys residing, but definitely wild animals!). Some of the yard had grown unkept for years. It needed to be "tamed," and taken care of. So I first contacted John at Helix after getting a recommendation from a long-standing nursery, Deep Roots (then still at its Manhattan Beach location, now on Hawthorne Blvd.) in November of 2024. I did look at some other landscape design companies, but they looked a little too "boutique," and not really in line with a budget-friendly concept and more of an original native "beach" vibe that I wanted in the front and back yards. John and Helix Landscape was the way to go: always prompt, friendly, easy to communicate with, and willing to come up with helpful and creative suggestions and solutions to certain problems I thought we were facing. One of the main goals was to regain some privacy from a recently-built 2 story house next door -- which is a very common concern in the beach cities. I also wanted to create -- or recapture, a lush landscape in the backyard, and this was in conjunction with rebuilding a pool deck (which Helix oversaw) and having the swimming pool rebuilt (done through pool contractor, Tierney Pools -- also recommended). So, in short, this was a major undertaking. The Helix team (John, and his employees Doug, Aiden, and his landscape designer, Aaron ) demolished and leveled what was maybe 40 years of undergrowth, as well as artificial grass, leveled it out, came up with a landscape plan that went through a few collaborative revisions, and then planted a completely refreshed landscape that included Italian cypress trees, Olive trees, lemon trees, and California native plants. Mulch, and new soil were also added. An irrigation system was also installed in the front and back yards, which are using a low amount of water, and are timed so that we don't have to worry about it. At the side of the pool, a lot of concrete was also excavated (thanks to Doug) in order to install more irrigation for the trees there. The front yard also had more native plants installed after coming up with another landscape plan with Aaron. Even more wild vegetation was demolished at the side of the property, and John and his team installed a ficus privacy hedge, as well as planters with more native plants, which will attract pollinators and birds. I also know that John is a handy carpenter, and will do custom work. He has been very attentive to updates, and little fixes or adjustments that needed to be made. All in all, I have worked with Helix for over a year now, and will not hesitate to do so again in the future. Highly recommend!

I'm definitely the outlier here on yelp, but Helix did an extremely shameful installation for my…read moreresidential project. Nothing was done correctly. 1. irrigation: John explained he was an irrigation specialist and he declined the irrigation plan saying he would take care of the irrigation and that the price was included. He spent the first two weeks working on the irrigation, and in the end, half the grass did not survive and many of the shrubs also dried up. I ended up having to hire another contractor to re-do my irrigation who installed a completely new system tailored to the design (with new pipes, drip for shrubs, and rotor heads for the grass) in two days for less than what john charged me for one new station (that I never even authorized). 2. Lawn: new ground cover did not come in and the old grass and shrubs are popping up all over the place, despite me paying for demo of the original lawn and landscaping. I was also there when he instructed his team to spray round-up on the yard AFTER seeding and planting, so those shrubs died and the lawn either didn't grow in or died. John tried to attribute the dead shrubs to the heavy rain. 4. Very poor shrub quality: he accepted poor/dying plant material, and also let it sit for two weeks before installing, and he actually installed dead plant material, then made me walk around and make a map or install flags where replacements were needed. 5. Shrub installation: shrubs weren't placed per the design, and he also made me go around and map out the mistakes. 6. Hardscape installation - he installed stepping stones 2 inches above grade and planting boxes very unlevel/lop sided. I did get other quotes, but took this one based on recommendations. I do not recommend Helix.
