The group of ladies who keep this place going curate it nicely for each season and rotate in and out decor for all the major holidays. The home goods section is pretty stocked too. They've got picture frames and art, baskets, glassware and mugs, plates and platters. Lots of treasures if you take a few minutes to check the shelves. Currently they are bursting with bunnies and all things green. Next up will be loads of colorful platters and such for your summer bbq's and then they'll roll in the pumpkins and all the fall things. The kids section is a fav. They've got it nicely organized with various toys, puzzles, games and lovies. Recently scored a baggie of plastic dinos for $1. My 2yo was pretty pumped especially when I pull the T-Rex out of the bag. Books are located at the back and range from 50 cents up to a couple bucks. There are shelves of kids books, cookbooks, fiction novels, etc. All in pretty good condition too. Left recently with a couple kids books that looked brand new. The clothing section is one that I haven't dove too far into.. yet, as I never seem to have enough time/without a child to be able to go through the racks. But there's a ton of stuff to look through. Women's clothes, men's clothes and kids clothes. Plus a few racks of accessories and shoes. I have peeked at prices as I wondered past and there really are some awesome deals to be had if you have the time. A couple random tips for shoppers: The shop is open weekdays and then one Saturday a month. That Saturday is packed. Every single time I've gone. And sometimes with overly aggressive bargain hunters. If crowds are not your jam then I suggest going on a weekday. The shop is a very decent size but they've also packed a lot into it so the aisles are not wide... and it is not easy to navigate a stroller through. Trust me I've tried. If you need a stroller to be able to do some shopping then I, again, I recommend going on a weekday. Bonus tho - the shop is accessible! Enter on ground level and no steps to worry about.

Located off of Lafayette Avenue in Hawthorne, we discovered this establishment offering antiques, furniture, household goods, and collectibles. Upon arriving at the entrance in the back, which might look small from the outside, Then and Now Consignment Shop with its floor-to-ceiling and in every nook and cranny, items come in all shapes and sizes, and finding the perfect one for your collection can be a real accomplishment. My partner and I came here looking for something to put our artificial, realistic flowers in. Already have our eyes on a couple of items and finally found a beautiful glass vase at a reasonable price. This is all worth a visit and has enough stock to keep collectors of all manner of items happy, which we can recommend.

Today, I came with a small bag of donations, a few gently worn items and some new "Chico's" dresses still with purchase tags. I had no idea there was a protocol to follow: 1. Make an appointment 2. Everything must be pressed and on hangers... I was only 'stopping-by" to to good deed... nothing more. The woman who greeted me, very curtly told me that I was supposed to have made an appointment. After the dressing down for no appointment, she said she'd see me. Then, giving my small bag the once over without opening it, told me she couldn't take anything, to take it back because everything had to be on hangers. She then opened the bag and showed me how very wrinkled my things were and launched into a dissertation about how there wasn't enough 'woman power' to press all the clothes. She said I could take my things elsewhere. I am so glad there were no other customers in the shop within earshot... I was mortified. I told the woman that I had no idea there were rules to follow, I was only doing a good deed. (Please note: I do understand that, as with anything, there need to be guidelines. Surely I would have complied had I known.) The woman then told me to leave the bag and she'd go through it, keep what she felt acceptable and 'donate' the rest. She thanked me and then, in a somewhat condescending tone, invited me to browse. I thanked her and said, "I don't think so.". I left feeling embarrassed and quite hurt. Shame on that woman... she should not be allowed to represent Consign Design! Her unkindness caused unnecessary hurt and humiliation ... and isn't that what Consign Design champions against? It seems as though this year I've entered into my thrifting era and in recent months I've visited…read morethe NFSB Thrift Shop a handful of times.. each time discovering a new trove of treasures. For those who haven't been in a minute, or haven't visited at all - there are actually (2) thrift shops to see. The main building (at 169 Chestnut) houses majority home goods with a handful of clothing and a section for kids/toys and pets. Across the street (162 Chestnut?) is where you'll find larger furniture pieces and the majority of clothing/shoes/accessories. Both spaces are laid out nicely, not overly crowded and organized. There are plenty of volunteers in both shops to assist you if needed. During my most recent visit I found (and brought home) a small near perfect milk glass mixing bowl (no doubt from someone's grandma's kitchen) for only $2. Others around me purchased a stack of plates, a beautiful oversized basket, a guitar! There really does seem to be a little bit of everything in the shop, and something for everyone. I thought prices were fair - drinking glasses are $1 unless otherwise marked. Picture frames were a dollar or two and it seems like they are often having a BOGO sale on those + artwork. They've got a kitchen section, an area of holiday decor, etc etc etc. Street parking is easy-ish and close to Rt 3 shopping [in Clifton].. so really a nice spot to stop in if you're in the area and find yourself zig zagging through Nutley trying to avoid traffic on Rt. 3.

They have boxes with descriptions which help to find items if you are looking for something specific. They have a large variety of vintage and 80's & 90's clothing which was cool to see. Prices are a bit high for my thrifting taste but not bad. Jean jackets were $15 & light female varsity vintage jackets were $10. Definitely check them out if you are looking for some cool vintage pieces.
