New upstairs training area (January 2019)
    Anna G.

I've been attending classes at Revolution for awhile now, but I still feel like I haven't gone enough. Why is that? I'm not sure, but I can tell you this: Revolution is constantly growing and changing and is still my number one choice for a good fitness class. Revolution has grown quite a bit since their humble beginnings in 2014, and nowhere is this more evident than their offering of a virtual subscription and live classes in 2020. I haven't had a chance to try the virtual offerings due to a lack of space at home, never mind the lack of equipment, but it looks to me as though Revolution has thought this through and knows what will appeal. (Marketing 101, folks.) Owners Colleen, Amanda, and Rachel demonstrated how to grow a business and adapt to changing trends and demands, all while teaching plenty of classes. Classes generally fit into two categories: cycling and strength/interval training. Indoor cycling classes are a frequent staple on the schedule. Your best bet for an intro class is RevRide, which is a more classic spin class. You'll face intervals, hill climbs, sprints, push ups, and plenty of ways to mix things up. Don't worry about looking coordinated, I gave up on that a long time ago and more complicated movements are easy to fake. For those of you looking for a more advance class, consider rhythm rides, focusing on choreography on the bike. Again, ask me how I know that it's possible to fake the movements. Look for theme rides to predict your music! The other classes at Revolution are what I like to call the "and" classes: things like row and strength, run and strength, TRX (and others), bootcamp style classes...you get the idea. I like Rev and Total Body when it's available: half spin, half strength intervals. I have a chronic shoulder injury and TRX helped me to rehab my busted rotator cuff. If it's your first time, I suggest trying a class with Mandy, as she is the most beginner friendly of the instructors. I'm happy to say that in three years, I've only been told once that I wasn't working hard enough, though I'd rather be able to say that I've never been told that at any Rev class. (I also have knee issues.) I've been lucky enough to come to these classes and do my thing. Revolution has also mastered the art of outdoor classes in the community. My first class was in the summer of 2017 at the Outer Harbor, and from there I tried a weeklong unlimited pass to confirm that I liked what I tried. Needless to say, I did. Be on the lookout for collaborations with other organizations and studios. That's not to say that a five star business can't stand to take a close look at what's going on and scan for improvements. As far as the community aspect, there are things to raise an eyebrow at. Longtime clients seem to be favored by the staff (there are VIP clients, how one becomes one is not publicized), frequently spotlighted, and there is an air of groupthink, often seen in wardrobe: "I saw Lauren wearing black Lululemons, so I bought black Lululemons". In recent years, everyone wears all black, which is a superficial thing to spotlight, but it's made me stand out like a sore, larger bodied thumb on more than one occasion. Speaking of Lululemon, ever since Revolution became an authorized retailer, prices for branded gear have naturally skyrocketed, leaving out clients who can't afford it. Speaking of the gear for sale, the chosen merchandise often favors a specific body type, one with a flat abdomen. Not everyone wants to wear a high necked crop top to the gym. This has led to Revolution becoming the gym where a sports bra is a shirt, which I hate because again, it favors a very specific body type and personality to match, and leaves out those who don't belong. If you look at Rev's social media accounts, you see a lot of the same things: young, thin, white women. I will own my old crab tendencies and acknowledge that those women sell products. But it gets old seeing the same body type spotlighted as the Monday Motivator. Rev used to be a place where "come as you are" was taken seriously. Now, there's something missing from the company personality and what you see is a generic fitness facility where the pretty girls hang out. It's hard to tell where the influence of the owners can be seen. This also presents itself in the instructors. Everyone is ready for instagram. Admittedly, I did think about auditioning, but the reason I didn't is a simple, sad one: for the first time since I became a client, I worried that I'd be told to come back after I've lost weight. Revolution is a great facility and has built a solid foundation. I do enjoy attending classes when I'm able to, even if I am a whiny "old" lady. But a good business always needs to take a good look around and make sure that the needs of all their clients are being met, even the needs of those who don't want to live their lives on Instagram. If you need a friend, I'm here and I promise, we'll work hard and sweat harder.

I started attending classes here around August. I purchased a week unlimited for $20 which is a deal for new clients to try out different classes. I highly recommend doing the week unlimited and try a different type of class each day. They offer an awesome variety including spin, TRX, rowing, HIIT, and more. After the week I was ready to continue so I bought a 10 class pack for $120. I go once a week using the class pack. This month I decided to try the one month unlimited for $100, you can go to up to 2 classes a day with this package. All the instructors I have worked with are awesome, they are high energy, friendly, they will push you to work your hardest but always give variations/modifications, they truly let you make it your workout and let you focus on what you need. The bikes are easy to adjust and use. I never have felt intimidated to try any of their classes and its nice to workout in a group and motivate each other. They are currently renovating the building, adding workout space upstairs so they can offer more awesome classes. I cannot say enough good things about Revolution!

At the beginning of the summer, I accidentally took a SoulCycle class in DC. (This, of course, is a story for another time.) While I can live without the $30-a-class price tag and SoulCycle-trademarked ~motivation~, I was genuinely surprised by how much the workout challenged me. Spinning is HARD, you guys. Call it fate (or ad optimization), but when I returned to Buffalo, an ad for Rev's new client special appeared on my Instagram feed. A week of unlimited classes for $20 was simply too good to pass up, so off to Rev I went, wondering how their classes would stack up to the SoulCycle experience I had several weeks prior. It was amazing. The atmosphere is great, the playlists are fire, and the workouts are killer. Every class was challenging, but the instructors are super motivating (and not in a way that comes off as fake, which was the impression I had of SoulCycle). Each instructor definitely has a different style and vibe. Ultimately I preferred Emily's and Colleen's classes, but I felt accomplished every time I left the studio. I only signed up for spin, but TRX, rowing, and HIIT classes are also found on the weekly schedule. I'm a little skeptical of the boutique fitness trend in general (why is the price of wellness astronomical all of a sudden?) but as a former D1 athlete, the concept of group fitness and using the people surrounding you as motivation is definitely something I can get behind. Rev definitely emphasizes the community -- it's something you feel when you walk in the door before class, when people are chatting with each other before they get on their bikes, and when they stick around for ten minutes after class just to connect with each other. Tragically, my week of Rev classes was almost immediately followed by my permanent departure from Buffalo (ugh). I'll definitely come back here for Emily's 10:15am Sunday class any time I'm in the area.

This is the second location of the very popular Revolution Buffalo - Spin and TRX studio. They have taken a space inside of Jada Fitness on Transit. Walking in you enter Jada, but then you go through the terrific looking gym floor and through a locker area, where you can leave your things. Small cubbies, for a purse and keys. Bring a lock if you want. Then you go upstairs to the Rev space where there are bikes and a sound system. They have branded the space with their trademark logo and colors. There are windows looking over the Jada gym, but no windows to the "great outdoors". 15 bikes (the same brand as the downtown location) and 10 TRX are in the upstairs space. They offer their usual classes, Spin with TRX, Spin alone, TRX alone. Right now (March 2016) they are doing lots of free classes so you can come try it out. The schedule now has morning and evening classes, but they hope to offer more through the day as they learn about the clients in general area. The three owners are great, and so are the instructors they have hired. I think you can get a discounted rate at Jada for being a Rev client. Jada has equipment and personal training. You can use Jadas dressing rooms and shower. Always a plus. Plenty of parking right out front.

I love spin, and this studio takes the crown. From the minute you walk in the door, everyone is so friendly. Not "clicky" like some studios can be. The studio is bright, clean and spacious. They offer different types of classes, which I plan on trying. The spin studio is clean and the bikes are modern and easy to adjust to. The spin instructors give you a full body workout. Ball weights are used to tone the upper body and different lower body moves such as tap backs are done to really work your glutes. The music is loud and upbeat and the lights are low! Just how I like it. Parking is available right on Main Street or there is a free parking lot right next door, just not on Sunday mornings because of the church sharing the lot.

I have been avoiding reviewing Revolution for selfish reasons... I want this place all to myself! I have finally decided to share the wealth and give this place the glowing review that it deserves. I have taken a number of different classes here and they are all different each time but always high energy, motivating, and challenging. The instructors foster an encouraging and supportive atmosphere; never singling anyone out, always providing assistance when needed and announcing modification options for newbies (or tired veterans). Don't let the name or logo confuse you this place does way more than just spinning classes. Prices are comparable to other boutique fitness classes in the area. So there ya have it, a great fitness experience that has helped me to stand a little taller with confidence.
