Ava and Grace (twins who sing for the church's band) are not the nicest. OVERALL: I highly recommend coming to this church! Most people are nice and the events are great. He was the first Native Alaskan man to reach the peak of America's tallest mountain Denali. His name was Walter Harper. They funded his education at Mount Hermon in Massachusetts so he could have an education that didn't denigrate the native community he lived in. At the turn of the century, the episcopal church was pretty much the only Christian church that took that progressive approach at the time.

The current classic English-medieval Gothic style church designed by Charles McKim, who also designed the old NYC Penn Station and Columbia University, began construction in 1887 and was completed the work on Nov. 2, 1911. Today it is an architectural treasure. The interior has Byzantine influences noted in the 1892 Siena-marble alter and the baptistery. The Spanish baroque rood screen is also worth noting. The right side of the chapel has a Tiffany window which depicts St. Peter "the rock of the church". Other stained glass works feature 14th & 15th century styles and art of early Christian liturgy. The Norman-style bell has 119 steps and a carillon with 49 bells, one of the largest in the country. On your visit do not forget to visit the cemetery which has markers going back to the 1700's. Some markers are interesting while others are humorous. Janet Broderick, the sister of actor Matthew Broderick and sister-in-law of Sarah Jessica Parker, was once the gifted pastor of the church. The great wooden doors are always open for pray and meditation.

I just got married in Holy Family Chapel. The chapel was beautiful the day of! But remember brides- there is no air conditioning just fans so be aware for summer weddings. You need to bring your own priest/deacon, organist/singer, etc. However, Sister Maureen was very helpful in recommending people to us to help. She was very patient and answered all our questions. She also allowed us to come visit the chapel many times beforehand. I would definitely recommend this chapel for weddings!

How many chapels do you know of that have a soon-to-be saint inside it? Blessed sister Miriam…read moreTheresa is a St. Elizabeth College alum, which is probably why she's buried there. She's kind of a big deal considering she'd be the second American-born saint. Just a little trivia for ya. I think this church is beautiful. The altar, the ceilings, everything. I'm pro a simple aesthetic when it comes to churches, but the details inside Holy Family remind me of a church in Italy that I loved. The seating is cross style with most of the seats in the center in front of the altar and then two "arms" of seats extending to the side. The sound system is a little strange. The microphone in the ambo (where the lector reads) is embedded so when you're up there, sometimes you're not sure if you're being loud or soft. Only graduates of St. Elizabeth College and the Academy of St. Elizabeth can get married in the chapel, which is a little perk considering the tuition at both institutions. I also heard there are some intense catacombs underneath this place. Yipes.. I'm such a wuss I've never prodded about the issue. NOTE: While writing this review, the speakers on my computer have been going in and out. So I'm gonna end it right here. :/
