I've been to Fort Massey numerous times for the community events that it houses. There are many faith oriented meeting and retreats (you can find details about these on their website) as well as events that are less related to spirituality. For example, every Wednesday at 6:00pm a certified yoga instructor teaches a yoga class for only $8 per person. I joined Weight Watchers a few summers ago and attended the local weekly meeting at Fort Massey. I liked the cozy atmosphere and friendly faces more than the other meeting spot I tried, and it almost made me feel relaxed being weighed in public! Weight Watchers meetings are held every Wednesday and Thursday at 12pm and Saturdays at 9am. Hot Hint: If you are interested in attending Sunday mass at 10:30 feel free to bring you little ones along, there is a staffed Sunday school and nursery.

Church! Praise! This is an okay venue for musicians to strut their stuff holy man style. No…read moredisrespect to the religious folk, I'm just speaking from my experiences at this locale which are purely of the entertainment and toe tapping variety. When I last ventured here to see a show, it was winter, and thus a chilly day indeed. Sadly, the space was as brisk as the blustery outdoors and I found my tapping toes turning to baby icicles in no time flat. The church is of course, lovely; however, as a spectator I found it hard to feel completely enthralled due to the seating situation. Pews aren't the most comfortable and these ones are organized in a way that's not the most conducive to viewing music. I mean, fair enough, this is a church and all. But why can't pews be cozy and comfy, perfect for taking in the scriptures and enjoying a Sunday morning mass and perhaps as well a rock show? I'd really appreciate some cushions and a little back support. But I suppose if that's not in the question, I'll take a little heat instead to warm the frigid interior on a cold day. Asking too much, am I? Maybe. But if I'm paying the big bucks to see a show, I'd like a little comfort. Anyway, this church is a-okay if you're going to visit for a show that's a must see. Maybe bring yourself some pillows though, especially if you have a boney bum.

Beautiful inside and out…read more I am not a religious man. I am a spiritual one however. But I wasn't going to St. George's Round Church for either religious or spiritual reasons. I was filming a documentary and this church was part of the history surrounding the story I was covering. From the outside, the church is nice. Not amazing or incredibly large, but nice. It is located very close to the downtown shopping district in Halifax. When you walk inside, you are greeted by one of the largest, open space churches I have seen in the Maritimes. A large part of the Church is in fact Round. In fact it is the only round church left in North America. When we wanted to film inside the church, we were pleasantly surprised by very helpful staff. So the staff at this church are very helpful, which some may not find surprising. However I have been to a few churches in my day and have met some bad apples. So I wasn't sure what I would find coming to this round church. But thankfully I was pleasantly surprised. St. George's Round Church is a classically Anglican church. They have of course many services, but also have outreach programs, music programs, religious education and an incredible program for youth called YouthNet. Their goal is to help and inspire youth who live in the north end of Halifax where the church sits. I had a great time here and although I am not a fan of organized religion, this church did take my breath away. The staff are very friendly and they all do the best they can. It really doesn't get better than St. George's Round Church.

It is a gorgeous old building in downtown Halifax, and in the last number of years the direction has been shifting; attempting to transition from its fairly stuffy roots, into something a little more accessible and perhaps more appealing to a younger crowd. Last night I attended a theatre performance at The Halifax Club. Zuppa, an amazing local theatre company, staged their play "Penny Dreadful" in the Uniacke room. The play is set in the 1800s so The Halifax Club as a venue, with its high ceilings and large paintings, was a very appropriate choice for the ensemble. The Pryor room bar was open before and after the show and our charming bartender Alex was helpful and generous. I enjoyed a glass of red wine for $7.5 while my date's beer was about $5.5. All of the people we encountered during our evening were very friendly and fun. If you happen to be invited by a member to dine or attend a function at The Halifax Club, you should accept the invitation. If you're hoping to become a member, check out the website. I'm sure it's not cheap, but you can feel both a sense of excitement and nostalgia knowing that you're walking the same halls that James C. Cogswell and William Cunard once did.

My guests loved it and kept saying how classy my wedding was, but it was all because I chose this as my venue. (disclaimer: this is all based on the service I had in 2004).
