In the ER
Shawn H.

I went to the Tyson's ER near me - was pointless bc they said I had to go to their bigger ER in Reston. It was an absolute shitshow- the wait was egregious, even for an ER. I was told I'd get an MRI - I went in the morning and didn't get it done until evening and I got my results told vaguely closer to midnight. I told them I was tired of waiting around but they insisted I needed immediate surgery. I was on the fence bc who goes from nothing to full blown surgery right away when you're conscious and otherwise fine right? I'm glad though, and grateful I received surgery. But the few days of admission was nothing short of terrible. One guy who takes blood in the morning was awful- he has no business doing it. I've never had anyone poke around that much and make it that excruciating before. And I'm pretty tolerant of pain. Some nurses were evasive. But please take note- NURSE DYLAN IS A GODSEND. He's very sweet. Very agile and helpful. That's the only part I liked about my stay there.

Still sitting in the ER waiting on someone to stop by and at least inform us of what is going on. Over 6 hours. Worst communications ever.

An Exceptional Experience -- Truly Caring and Compassionate Professionals!…read more I have visited this emergency room twice this year, and I can honestly say that my experience today was exceptional. From the moment I arrived, I felt genuinely cared for and treated with kindness and compassion. The nurse who took care of me was wonderful and even brought me warm blankets to make me feel more comfortable. The CT scan staff were also incredibly nice, professional, and reassuring. I especially want to recognize Dr. Kent and Nurse Timothy, who were truly outstanding. Nurse Timothy is honestly one of the best nurses I have ever met in my life. He was caring, professional, patient, and exceptionally kind to both my husband and me. The way he treated us made such a difference during a stressful and vulnerable moment. Sometimes, emergency rooms can feel cold and overwhelming, but this experience was completely different. Thanks to Dr. Kent, Nurse Timothy, and the entire team, I felt like I was surrounded by true professionals who genuinely cared about my well-being, rather than just trying to get through their patients. Thank you for reminding me what compassionate healthcare should look like. Your kindness, professionalism, and humanity did not go unnoticed. I am incredibly grateful for the care I received today, and I hope this team receives the recognition they deserve!

Dancing With the Stamina, Strength & Power of Inova Fairfax!…read more Two ideas really stood out to me every time I dance to Sia - The Greatest: "stamina" and "the greatest." I connected those ideas with hospitals because hospitals have to keep going through challenging situations, day and night, while teams work together to care for patients and help them recover as much as possible. ‍ And Inova Fairfax is especially meaningful to me because it is Inova's flagship medical center. It is also home to Northern Virginia's only Level I Trauma Center, where trauma teams are available around the clock for life-threatening injuries. ‍ I personally think of Inova Fairfax as "the greatest" because of how special and amazing this hospital feels to me. It has so many medical teams, specialties, services, and people working together toward the same goal of helping patients. But this vibe video is about more than just the hospital itself. It is also about overcoming difficult challenges. Hospitals see some incredibly challenging situations which patients and families may not know what is going to happen next. Healthcare teams cannot make every difficult situation disappear, but they can keep working, caring, treating, researching, communicating, and supporting patients through those challenges. ‍‍‍ To me, stamina means having the strength to keep going even when something is difficult. It means facing a challenge, taking things one step at a time, learning from what happens, and continuing to work toward something better. That's also why I wanted to dance it out! I wanted my dancing to capture that feeling of being thrilled when a difficult challenge starts getting better, that moment when something that once seemed overwhelming becomes more hopeful. I wanted to turn that feeling into positive movement, energy, and music. For me, dancing is a way to vibe with positive power and empathy. It is a way of celebrating perseverance, encouraging people who are going through difficult moments, and appreciating the people who keep working hard to help others. Keep going. Keep caring. Keep working together. Keep overcoming. Keep moving forward. ‍ That's how I dance it out. That's how I vibe with positive power, empathy, strength, and the joy of overcoming challenges!

When our daughter dislocated her shoulder after falling down the steps while taking her dog out for…read morea walk, we experienced one of the most frightening days our family has ever faced. She was first taken to another hospital, where the plan was to put her under anesthesia to reset her shoulder. Because she had a life-threatening reaction to anesthesia about 10 years ago, when she flatlined during surgery, we were extremely hesitant. Combined with the circumstances there, we decided to take her to Fairfax Hospital. That decision led us to Dr. Titus Park and his incredible team, and we are so thankful it did. From the moment we arrived, Dr. Park had a clear plan that did not involve anesthesia. He immediately put our entire family at ease with his calm confidence, compassion, and professionalism. My daughter was in excruciating pain--a true 10 out of 10. She asked one of the nurses if she would pray with her, and without hesitation, she kindly did. That simple act of kindness meant more than words can express. When Dr. Park successfully put her shoulder back into place, the relief was immediate. My daughter looked him in the eyes and said, "I could just kiss you!" It was such a heartfelt expression of gratitude because her pain was instantly gone. What also stood out was Dr. Park's wonderful bedside manner. Even in the middle of a stressful situation, he found a way to make us smile. He asked my two daughters, now both in their late 30s, which one was my favorite and which one had been the cutest baby. They both immediately raised their hands and looked at me, and I just turned my head. We all burst into laughter. It was exactly the kind of lighthearted moment our family needed. Dr. Park and his entire team turned an unbearable situation into a bearable one through their exceptional medical care, kindness, compassion, and genuine concern for both their patient and her family. We will never forget the care we received. Thank you, Dr. Park and your amazing team, for giving our daughter relief and giving our family peace of mind. We are forever grateful.

I stood there staring at them unimpressed and they just ignored me. I finally walked up to a clipboard on the other side of the counter and someone told me not to sign in there. I signed in the right clipboard and took a seat along with about 25 other people. The room was packed. When I got back to be prepped, I mentioned to the nurse doing my IV that I had small veins that collapse easy. She told me I shouldn't say that because it gave her anxiety. Like, wow. Ok. I'm pretty anxious already heading into surgery and not feeling welcomed as it is. Then my doctor never came to see me to discuss what he would be doing. The nurse said, did he talk to you? And I said no and she said, well he signed off on your paperwork. I had to literally tell them I wanted to see him. After the surgery, again my doctor did not come talk to me about how things went and when I asked the nurse what happened during the procedure she didn't know. I asked for the doctor then and she said he was already in his next surgery. I literally felt like cattle being moved in and out. I assume the surgery was successful so there's that. But otherwise, this was an AWFUL experience. Not warm, friendly, reassuring, or personal at all.

I was told I could begin treatment as soon as I arrived. Instead, one week post-op--with multiple incisions and a surgical drain--I spent nearly two hours filling out paperwork and answering questions only to be told they could not treat me. I was told the chamber had not yet been cleared/certified for use and that there were issues related to technician certification. I left without treatment despite having traveled there specifically because I had been told I could be seen. A couple of hours after I got home, I received a call saying they could take me after all. By that point, I had lost confidence in the facility. The entire experience felt disorganized, communication was poor, and the recommendations I later received conflicted with my surgeon's instructions. When you're dealing with time-sensitive treatment after major cancer surgery, patients deserve clear, accurate, and consistent information. Unfortunately, that was not my experience here.
