In the meantime, they instructed me to go to Urgent Care or the ER! Several other times, owing to minor issues such as ear infections and conjunctivitis, they insisted I do a Telehealth appointment or otherwise, go to Urgent Care or the ER. Further, annual physicals have not been comprehensive. Moreover, for my first physical with Barnard Medical, they assigned a medical student to conduct it, in its entirety (w/o any other doctors present). In addition, this was despite the fact that I had requested, in writing in my medical records, that I did not agree to be seen by medical students. It appears as if the doctors rarely even come into the office! The lovely Nurse Practitioner, Kristine, is the gem that seems to hold the office together! She shows both care and concern, and although there is a lag time to see her, too, at least you can get an appointment with her in person (eventually).

Apparently, according to this doctor's RateMDs.com reviews, and other Commonwealth Orthopaedics reviews on Yelp.com, waiting for long periods of time is a standard more than a deviation. These aren't walk-in clinics. You set up an appointment with a specific time and date and still have to wait an average of one hour, in our case, 1.5 hours for our first visit. I would wait, without complaint, for excellent bedside manner and respectful attention -- no problem. We selected Dr. Kathleen McHale because she is one of only a handful of doctors in the DC area whose primary emphasis is on pediatric orthopedics. She walked in with an unidentified man, there were no introductions and no questions were asked of the child who came in with chronic pain. The diagnosis was rendered in short order and we were sent on our way in no less than five minutes.

A minor but needless frustration: callers are told that appointments can be scheduled online. This is not actually possible, as one discovers only after wasting about 20 minutes trying. More seriously, during my sleep study, the technician insisted on waking me at 5:00 a.m. because he wanted to go home. This rule requires patients to fall asleep before midnight if both portions of the study--with and without CPAP--are to be completed. According to the records, I fell asleep at 11:58 p.m., yet the full study was still not completed. I must therefore undergo the study again. Whether I will be charged for this second attempt remains to be seen. In any case, because of long wait times, my diagnosis and treatment have been delayed by multiple months.

Care Quality Office Experience…read moreDr. Panahy had been my primary care physician for most of the 28 years I've been with Kaiser Permanente. I found her care to be excellent. She always spoke to me at length regarding my health and was always on top of whatever test, labs or Rx's I needed. Dr. Panahy was an excellent physician - caring, cooperative, informative and spent time with you despite the requisite 20 mins. that was usually mandated for appointments. I usually have to schedule my physicals a month or two in advance, and if I'm sick and need to get seen that day, I almost always have to settle for someone else in the practice. I usually don't have to wait long to be seen, and the practice seems to run fairly efficiently, aside from a recent frustration in getting a prescription refill. I find my annual checkups very helpful. Maybe it's just that I'm not trying to swaddle myself in a paper jacket and wrap - they usually give me a cloth gown. The office seems to schedule at least 30 minutes for annual checkups. Dr. Panahy is thorough, easy to talk to, and never seems rushed. She takes time to explain things, is well-informed, and is gentle during exams. She's been flexible with writing referrals, prescriptions for nonessential stuff like allergy meds and daily vitamins, and refilling prescriptions from specialists. The followup is fairly standard. If my labwork is normal, I get a letter in two weeks or so telling me the results. Dr. Panahy does call to discuss abnormalities. I haven't seen Dr. Panahy for any acute conditions, so I don't have a good feel for how she does with diagnosis. The other physicians in the office are okay.
