Located on Francisco Madero Ave. In front of Plaza Niños Héroes, Restaurante Tips, also known as Tips, La Casa del Café, in downtown Reynosa is like a Mexican version of a Denny's that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, specializing in traditional Mexican food.
There is no parking lot, but street parking is available both in front and all around the plaza Niños Héroes. The actual storefront is deceptively small, but as you enter the dining room is narrow but quite long, and opens up more in the back.
Tips has a long history. It is apparent they've been around a long time. So the decor and vibe is rather vintage and a bit weathered. The tables have glass tops featuring coffee beans under the glass. Decor includes a statue of the Virgin Mary who watches over the diners.
The menu is quite extensive. For breakfast they offer everything from pancakes, eggs cooked your way, chilaquiles, large, generously served breakfast tacos made with your choice of homemade corn or flour tortillas, northern Mexican classics like machacado (dried beef), omelets, sweet breads (conchas and more), cereals, oatmeal, and much more.
Lunch includes burgers, Mexican antojitos of all kinds, sandwiches, meat plates, soups, milanesa, the Tampiqueña steak, and much more. They also have desserts, ice cream, etc.
The coffee was not the best I've had but was brewed coffee and hot milk was provided in lieu of creamer.
This is the kind of place locals frequent, friends gather, and families come to eat out. Tips also offers take-out. Service was very good and friendly.
I was there for breakfast. When I found out the size of the breakfast tacos, I decided one would suffice for me. I'm not a big breakfast person. My friend ordered two.
I didn't see inside the bathrooms, but did use the sink area to wah my hands, and the cleanliness was OK. There were no towels or method provided to dry hands.
This is not a fancy place, but quite popular with locals. I enjoyed my papa con huevo taco, and livened it up with the salsa provided which was spicy but good.
There are other places I have enjoyed more, but, it is what it is. For the class and kind of restaurant and the inexpensive prices, it was a good choice for a place to have a meal and good conversation with a friend. read more
