Nasty and hard mofongo with steak

Unsure what the hype is oe maybe it was just pure bad luck. Our Uber driver recommended Raices in OSJ and we found out this is indeed the original store. We ordered mofongo with steak, mofongo with bistec and yucca fries. Yucca fries was crispy but mayo/ketchup dip was cold. Both mofongo were HORRIBLE, very dry and hard to eat. We had this as to-go but ate in car 5 mins after receiving them. We each had two bites and it was super hard to swallow. Ended up eating the protein and threw away the rest. Mind you they are $20 each. You would think mofongo should be softly but these were rock hard. Didn't enjoy them at all and definitely won't be returning!

This review goes only for the original restaurant in Caguas. I understand the menu is different from the one in San Juan. I came here recently with my family. We flew over 4 hrs just to come over here and enjoy a nice lunch/dinner as a welcome to PR. Before going to a restaurant I always check their specialty and the reviews before I decide where to go and eat. The place is located in a main street near Caguas centro, parking is a give and take because we were lucky to find a spot in front of the restaurant. Arrived and I assumed he was the owner or the manager who took care of us and immediately we were seated. As it was past 2pm but before 3pm, the restaurant was not packed at all and since the food is made to order it did not took to long to arrived to the table. My husband ordered their famous can-can (kan-kan) pork chop (with salad and tostones de pana) and as for me and my son we tried the the churrasco with chimichurri sauce. Portion size were perfect. The same goes for the 3 leches for dessert (to go). The can-can pork chop yes it was big and good, no chewy no dry, just perfect, I know because my husband let me try it; the churrasco, in the other side, need it at least 1-2 more minute in the grill, it was more like a medium than a medium well, don't get me wrong it was a good portion size but a little bit tough to chew. The sangria was ok, tasted more like grape juice and without the fruits. Oh and better no forget, those breadfruit tostones (tostones de pana), were the b.o.m.b!!!!! If you are curious about the total cost, I paid $55 ($70 with tip) total, and I paid a good tip because we were well attended. This is the price for 3 adults, 2 alcoholic drinks, 2 desserts and 1 bottle water. Plus taxes. We are coming back that is for sure, every time we fly to PR, Raices in Caguas, be my first stop. Yes I do recommend Restaurante Raices Caguas Note for the restaurant: your "contact us" link does not work. I tried to contact you via fb messenger and still waiting for a response.

    Guaynabo, Puerto Rico Restaurante Raices

I would have never ventured this far outside of San Juan on my own, however, we have family in Puerto Rico and here we go. I love visting places where you know someone and they love showing off their city. Lets start with my introduction to "one of the most original, impressive and successful thematic culinary concepts of Puerto Rico and the Americas". I ordered the Kan Kan Pork Chop with a Mojito and loved every bite of it! The chop was prepared with a awesome seasoning that I have never had before and made my mouth water with every bite. The decor of this restaurant from the outside and the inside reminds me of the Disney designers putting all their creatives minds together and coming up with an authentic look, BUT this is not Disney at all, but the minds of the wonderfully and gifted Puerto Rican people. Every dish placed at our table was created with the culture of it's people and the love of a chef willing to share his passion for food with you. Do not leave this place without a famous mojito!!! The following passage is right from their history book... It was in May 2002, after two years of planning, organizing, and finding a conveniently located commercial space, that Restaurante Raíces opened its doors. With only $ 10.00 petty cash , eight tables and a limited service space, Nydia ( waitress ) and Chef Erick began what had dreamed and yearned for a long time... to open the doors of their very own restaurant. Having in mind the love for our island, our customs and traditions was that we did our first decoration with native Puertorican crafts. Thanks to the great response we had, a year later, in May 2003, we inaugurated new facilities , decorated with the same thematic atmosphere and recreating a typical vecinity of 1940. These included a new bar called "The Chinchorro" and twenty three new tables. In addition we make our first hall in one for private activities for up to thirty people. With great success we expand and open new facilities in Recinto Sur #315 Street in Old San Juan in 2006, with the same concept and a larger hall that accommodates up to 200 diners. We also have a small shop (Gift Shop ) offering guests who visit us the opportunity to buy Puerto Rican typical candies, and items with our logo, which can be a gift or souvenir of your visit to our restaurant. To this day our restaurant has been visited by innumerable celebrities and obtained excellent reviews on local television programs such as "Desde mi Pueblo", "La Cocina de Cielito", "Pasaporte al Buen Gusto", and also internationally through the Travel Channel and its world-famous programs "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations" and "Man v Food".

Sorrulitas de yucca (fried yucca sticks with mayoketchup)
    Sabrina D.

I've been dying to come back here to eat. My first time was in December 2017. The mofongo rellena de churrasco al chimichurri was melt in your mouth fantastic and super moist too. Had the sorrulitas de yucca as well, which aren't on the menu at the Raices in Old San Juan. Items are a little bit on the pricey side but are well worth the cost. I got mine to go this time and it took me almost an hour to get back to San Juan so not the best looking but still the best tasting!!!

great restaurant with an amazing vibe & delicious food! First timer in PR so I had to get mofongo churrasco! It was everything it was described as and more. The mashed plantains (mongo) were garlicky which complimented the churrasco well! A friend ordered the paella which I got a bite of, also delicious. Of course had to drink some local craft beers with our dinner ;)

The food is great, but the service is too slow. The mofongo with churrasco is awesome. You got to try the Frappe de Parcha.
