Hmmm.....so Calcuta. Based on comments from previous Yelpers in Madrid, I was really looking forward to some inexpensive and tasty Indian. I've eaten a fair bit of Indian in the States and while Im no aficionado on Hindu cuisine, I do have a good idea for what I like and what I don't. Unfortunately, I have to say that I didn't much care for the food at Calculta.
We ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Saag Aloo, Basamati Rice and Plain Nan - our standard order for the first time at any new Indian restaurant. Prior to our food coming out they served papadon with a yogurt sauce and a chutney. It was a slow start, while I don't have expectation for a gourmet amuse bouche at Indian, I do have high expectations for the chutney. This chutney was basically chopped onions and peppers - not my favorite.
The Tikka and Saag came next and both were pretty underwhelming. I found both dishes to be oily and thin. Perhaps Im accustomed to a different kind of Indian, but I am accustomed Tikka sauce that is made with cream and butter for smoothness. Its what makes you want to use your nan like a sponge to soak up every last drop of the stuff. I don't think they added either to these dishes.
High points: Service was very nice and helpful and they had good Indian beer.
Needless to say, Ill be continuing my search for good Indian in Madrid, because I haven't found it with Calcuta . . . . read more
