Hello yelpers,
I was very excited to go to Via Roma for the first time last night as I had heard very good feedback from many of my friends. And I'm quite sorry to say that it did not really live up to the hype...
I'll start with the positive with is definitely the spot. The restaurant is near the Church in Carouge and on Place du Marché, you have a feel of intimacy and it looks great. The terrace was unfortunately full last night so we had to sit on the other side of the street, near the restaurant but we were still outside and it was more than fine.
The waiters were really nice to us, and service was smooth (yet it was a Tuesday night so not the craziest night of the week in Geneva...).
Now, let's get to the not so positive things, i.e. the food. Considering the quite pricey menu, I was expecting my food to be really good. It was sadly not the case. I ordered the veal tournedos (which, on paper, looked really good) and, though the meat was cooked perfectly, it was wayyyy too salty whereas the vegetables and small corn polenta that came with it did not have much flavor. I tried the tagliatelle al ragu that my sister ordered but it was not a lot better, she did not even finish her plate and left the meat out as it was pretty chewy and frankly not very good. My mother ordered the shellfish spaghetti but didn't seem to be wooed by it either.
I want to believe last night was a small cooking bump for this otherwise really charming restaurant, as, really, all my friends tell me they love the place and go there often. I'll try again and will let you know!!
Hope this was helpful! Happy yelping!! read more
