And the location is stunning! The service was just not good enough.. They had a full restaurant, and only 2 waiters on job.. if you're a city cafe or a bodega, I think 2 service personnel is far enough for this amount of people, but in a restaurant where they wish to tell you about the food etc., I don't think it's enough.. for example, they forgot my request for no nuts (allergy), we were 5 people and they served us 4 pieces of bread, and it was hard to get in contact with them.. When they were around and when we talked with them, they were always very friendly and competent - but I think it was a too busy evening for them.. The food, on the other hand, was well portioned, well prepared and the synergies were amazing! Different tastes, different experiences and different variation - but all very nicely together.. For the price (400kr ~ 60$) for the evening 3 courses tasting menu, I've absolutely no complaints.. Also, Denmark is in general an expensive country to eat in, so keep that in mind..

The city was packed with bus loads of tourists, but this restaurant was able to get us reservations without any trouble. I ordered the 4 course traditional Danish meal. The first course was a wonderfully chewy sourdough rye muffin with a wonderfully herbed butter and a creme fresh tart (nope, we're not in Kansas anymore Dorthy!). Second course, fish grilled to perfection. In a light curry sauce. Third dish, pork cheeks that were not just fork tender, but spoon tender with fried chanterelles and warmed elderberry clusters accentuating the earthy goodness of the Danish countryside. My beautiful wife ordered the chicken and asparagus tort followed by a fried beef patty with potato fries, bright green peas and a very well done bearnaise sauce. Think a more every day rustic meal. It alone was fantastic, and I gladly traded bite for bite with my wife. The bearnaise was exceptional, and I could have happily dipped my shoe sole in it for a midnight snack. And finally, a pear crumble. The flavor of the hot pear was well pronounced, and cut with the elderberry sorbet/vanilla sauce. The desert hand a crunchy topping, chunky pear compote with a creamy sauce hitting 3 different textures. Overall, a well balanced Danish experience and a wonderful culinary surprise for us both! Instead, it was like expectantly arriving at the home of a new friend, a friend who lives in a beautiful, old-fashioned house in the country. We were shown into the smaller of the two home-like dining rooms (our hostess smoothly handling the potentially-tense moment when she discovered that she didn't have our reservation), informed of the Danish Christmas Feast buffet option and presented with the beer crate. The beer crate? Yes, not only does this fine dining restaurant consider beer to be a normal choice at the table, but also presents their selection in an old wooden crate brought tableside. [Nods of approval] We chose a large bottle of a Juleøl brewed for the restaurant by Danish microbrewers, Bøgedal. Then came a variety of freshly-baked breads served with dishes of butter and bacon fat. Since we'd chosen Sortebro Kro for a traditional Danish food experience, we all went for the Julebordet buffet. Dozens of delightful choices, from fried pickled herring to black pudding to boiled eggs to smoked fish and on and on and on . . . And after we'd stuffed ourselves, in glided our serene server with the main course of duck breast and pork belly with prunes. And then an amazing dessert of apple sorbet. And then some chocolates. *burp* We're saving a star for when we come back and order off the a la carte menu. We can't wait!
