Had heard very good things about this spot for traditional Greek food, and given our affinity for…read morethis style of cuisine it was hard to pass it up! Went for an early-ish dinner, so not many folks in there yet, but we were quickly seated where we ordered some Greek wine and made a plan for our shared meal. We love ordering "family style" at Greek restaurants (especially appetizers), but given it was only two of us we scaled our usual selections back a bit. We stuck with a menu of tzatziki, saganaki, spanakopita and gyrospfanne. They started our meal with a complimentary pair of Ouzo shots, then we dug right in to the tzatziki served with thick-cut hearty bread slices. Shortly thereafter the saganaki (fried cheese) came out, also served with the same tzatziki on the side which paired well together given the richness of the cheese now "cut" by the bright fresh cucumber-y sauce. The spanakopita was served in a plate full of small, triangular baked pies which also was great with the tzatziki. Lastly, the gyrospfanne dish was not a traditional gyro style platter...instead it came as diced-cut gyro meat served in a cognac cream sauce with sliced peppers and onions. Alongside the meat was a portion of vegetable rice and a side salad. A very hearty meal and we were stuffed by the end. We really enjoyed the atmosphere...would have sat outside if it was a bit cooler out but an enjoyable experience nonetheless.

It's always a good sign when there are a number of Greeks dining here! Our server brought us two complimentary shots of ouzo. Yamas! I decided to start with the chicken soup (aka avgolemono) as it was a cold winter evening. It was nice and brothy unlike the creamy thick versions found in the states. I would say the soup was a bit more authentic. We opted for a taramasalata and a horiatiki as a second course. Both were good and hit the spot. For dinner, I had the moussaka. It was good but was drier than I expected. I was hoping for a bit of a saucier middle section. All in all a nice find in Vienna of all places!

This place really is incredible; after a long wait, it replaced an otherwise bleh restaurant in…read morethis local and Athene has arrived. You enter the old space, but never really get there since you're immediately transported to Greece through the friendly waiters who will introduce themselves and shake your hand to welcome you (thanks, Niko!) - you're then seated (we've actually only ever sat outside) wherever your heart desires. This restaurant epitomizes casual elegance - you could go in jeans, you could go in a business suit and still feel equally comfortable. It's the food here that really stands out though - completely fresh - the fish, despite the realization that Austria does not have a Navy (no ocean's here, nor kangaroo's, but that's another story) tastes as if it took a flying leap from the ocean to Athene's kitchen. Their Greek Salad (heck, if you can't make one of these you shouldn't be in the Greek food business) is just phenomenal - cucumbers that crunch, olives that are the perfect salt mixtures, huge black and green ones, beautiful chunks of feta.... incredible. Hubby has gotten everything from a beef dish that was perfectly flavored to a full fish that was perfectly grilled, perfectly spiced. I love their lentil soup, their Greek salad and this incredibly garlic puree that I could eat large scoops of and ward off vampires for ages.... I could eat it with anything. Main courses come with a beautiful mixed salad, you're offered a small touch of ouzo at the end. Nothing better then a meal here, any night of the week. Plus they are open every day from 11 to midnight... Every day? It's all Greek to me.
