We were returning from vacation about an hour south of Québec. We wanted a quick lunch. Poutine?…read moreWhy not. We missed our chances in the city so it would be now or never. A quick Yelp search for a lunch place "nearby" brought us here. Its just 5 minutes off the highway but not something you'd just stumble upon; it's tucked away by itself on a quiet rural byway. It's got an old-fashioned "roadhouse" feel to it: a little "divey" but not in a bad way, complete with a full bar and a tiny makeshift music stage. It was early afternoon and busy but not crowded, all locals. I guess they don't get too many tourists here; everybody took notice of us as we entered but quickly returned to their business. The diners seemed to be a mix of blue-collar workers on lunch break, families with kids, and friends out for lunch, drinks, and conversation. They don't speak much English here so I got to practice my rudimentary French, and found out just how rudimentary it really is. And don't expect English menus either. Fortunately I know enough to order some food: poutine, cheeseburger, onion soup, coke. I scored 3 out of 4: While I thought I was asking for French onion soup what I actually ordered was "French Onions"; what we call onion rings back home! Oh well, mistakes like this make for an interesting time! Too bad the onion rings were pretty mediocre: heavy greasy batter and not very hot. The truth: I've only had poutine once before and I wasn't impressed then. But it's so much the rage up here in Québec that I wanted to be better informed and maybe eventually even a fan. As it turns out, we should have passed this time. Short cut, soggy fries drowned in a gravy that tasted canned. And not all that hot either. The third essential ingredient of poutine, cheese curds, was also present of course and made it less boring. Maybe we should have ordered it with one of the many add-ons they offer, such as sausages, mushrooms, etc.? Actually I thought we did; it was probably another misunderstanding, a consequence of our mutual language incomprehension. Oh well, no matter. The cheeseburger: ok but nothing special. Somewhere between Wendy's and McDonalds (closer to Wendy's). So, will this put an end to my poutine quest? Certainly not, these two samples have taught me what bad poutine is, but I know there's good stuff out there somewhere and I'll find it eventually! So 2 points for the food, bonus point for atmosphere. Were I to find myself here again I'd probably try a pizza.

After sitting…read morein heavy traffic in Quebec City for too long, we wanted to get past the city before stopping to eat. I found Jo-Dre. To be honest, we were a little nervous as it isn't much to look at on the outside - divy to be sure. We were glad however that we went inside. The staff were super friendly and it was bustling with locals. We ordered Jo-Dre pizza and a smoked meat poutine. It was awesome. The best poutine we've had this trip and we've been to some of the highly rated places in Montreal and Quebec City this trip. Don't forget to butter you crusts! Oh and a 12' pizza came in four slices which confused us a little...but it was all good going down. Great stop - don't miss it!

Just past security at Québec's airport, Blaxton is the terminal's lone full-service dining room,…read moreand it carries that responsibility with quiet competence. The menu reads far broader than one expects of an airport pub, from hearty English-style breakfasts and crêpes with maple syrup and wild blueberries to wings, pizzas, and wraps. Execution is honest rather than inspired. Nothing here will haunt my dreams, yet nothing disappointed either. Service is bilingual, brisk, and pleasant, though a full room can stretch the staff thin. The true luxury is space. Ample seating and generous windows let me settle in, gaze outside, and simply enjoy life for a moment before boarding. Among the terminal's options, this is where I will return, not out of longing, but out of sensible preference.

I had vegetables and eggs in a pan, and he had a cheese omelette. We both had tea, and he had coffee. The experience overall was alright; the coffee was okay, the bread was okay, the service was okay, the prices were okay and the food was mostly okay (it seriously lacked spice and tasted, in my humble opinion, a bit bland). We found the best item on their menu was the green smoothy we had at the end, surprisingly sweet, fresh and infused with life, at least compared to the rest of what we ordered. While our visit wasn't a disaster in any sense of the word, it was all so average I doubt we will be back. Speaking of breakfast chains, we fancy more Eggspectation's menu, service and taste.

A special praise for their potatoes, really really good ones. The place itself looks like a standard food chain, not a cozy vibe, you come, you eat, you go. But I would to try another location, maybe it will have a better vibe for what I usually look in a place and go for their old fashioned skillets, specially the Mexican one. It has an egg, chorizo, avocado, Peppadew peppers, corn, black beans, red onions and mozzarella, salsa and sour cream. How can you go wrong with that?
