I left to find something else but tried my luck & coming back. Glad I did! They have wine, but as I was told, beer is their thing. The food was excellent and the staff are colorful and efficient as the flow between tables! I had the meatballs (2 large ones), meals come with a small salad and a side & bread! The beer selection is wide. Mostly Belgium ones. Other tables had what looked like delicious tuna, lasagna and stew which they all seemed to enjoy.

No reservations, so you have to wait in line. Luckily, the line moved pretty quickly and we were able to be seated inside. -service was great. The fabulously dressed flamboyant gentleman was kind and helpful. The sassy woman was hilarious! -Portions are pretty decently sized and priced fairly Why three stars? I just didn't enjoy anything that we ordered. Sadly, it was my least favorite meal that we had in Belgium. Based on all the reviews, I think it's clear that it's not the place per se, but what I was looking for. That being said, I still must be honest. What we ordered: Cheddar Croquettes (2 for 14 Euros): Just ok and this was one of the things that I felt was overpriced Carpaccio of Smoked Beef with White Truffle Oil (18 Euros): Again, just ok Meatloaf with "Jack Pepper" sauce (26 Euros): "Jack Pepper" means something different in Brussels. It was basically a peppercorn gravy. I wasn't a fan, but Jim G. enjoyed it. With this, we had frites and a small side salad. I know many people recommend that Flemish Beef Stew, but we already had that at Fin de Siecle, and I couldn't imagine that any place would top it, so we didn't get it here. Ultimately, this place isn't for me, but I seem to be in the minority.

I can't believe this entry is mentioned under "Bookshop" and not "Restaurant". And not even just…read moreany restaurant but an EXCELLENT restaurant. Maybe its to keep this restaurant a hidden gem? Hidden it is definitely, as one would never enter this place in order to find (excellent) food by the look of its windows, that is to say, the windows of a simple, modest and typical Belgian bookshop, selling newspapers, lottery tickets, but also cigars! Yes, and a very nice collection of cigars too. But maybe those cigars are intended to put you in this relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy some very good whiskey, excellent French cuisine and cigars (outside then probably). In order to be able to get there, you need to first enter the bookshop. Once you're inside, struck by the neon lights of the bookshop, you suddenly are nicely surprised by the view at the end of the bookshop: a cozy, warm-feeling, small restaurant, decorated in the typical older French brasserie style, with a huge window showing you the chefs at work. You know you're about to experience something very special! Have I already mentioned this restaurant is excellent? Right... It is a gem! You sit down and can already feel the specialness in the table setting. Every piece has "De Maurice à Olivier" engraved. How many restaurants still go this far in the details? Then, there is the service: all the attention you need without going over the top. Classy, but not pretentious. One big family to make you feel at home and show you their best French cuisine (ok, I won't mention the fact that the owner who sat at the bookshop counter kept on looking at us, which made me feel a little bit uncomfortable. So I tried not to look. I think she really checked us out, as we must have been the only new guests in her restaurant/bookshop. But in the end, we had a little chat and she's really nice, although physically, you might think it's better not to mess with her, :) ). The food? Excellent! I could describe it with all the best adjectives that could exist in the restaurant world, but I'll keep it to the fact that knowing how to cook game meat and create original variants with it is a main quality qualifier. The dishes were definitely original, not yet experienced in any other restaurant and never had I eaten game meat so soft and tender that it would melt in your mouth. Of course, my review is only based on their special game meat menu during the season. I will surely come back again and try their regular menu and see if the restaurant offers the same quality for all its dishes. But in the meantime, based on my first experience, it deserves a 5-star rating. Anyways, the French expression rightly says: L'habit ne fait pas le moine. Who would have thought this: a restaurant in a bookshop? And by the way: the fact that this is a restaurant that is open at restaurant hours makes it also very convenient if you need anything from the bookshop at (almost) any time! Way to go!

He reminded us of a combination of Neil Fak (from The Bear) and Lazlow (from What We Do in the Shadows). He was coordinating the line, seating, and gave outstanding recommendations, as well as praise, when we picked our wine. We were quoted about 45 minutes to wait, as they don't take reservations. A two-top opened up inside and Julian was concerned that it would be too hot, so he made me go inside to check first. Thankfully, it was right by the open area leading to outside, so we took it and were seated in about 20 minutes, rather than 45. The place was packed the entire time we were there; its reputation certainly precedes it. Good energy and beautifully decorated with stunning art inside. Carbonades a la Biere (beef stew; 19.45 Euros) is their speciality and was delicious! So reasonably priced for the flavor and te size of the dish! After Julian mentioned that the lamb is the best dish on the menu, there was no question that I was ordering it. Jarret d'Agneau Roti (Roasted Lamb Shank; 27.35 Euros) was so very good! Full of Rosemary and so tender! As Julian was running by, I quickly asked him: "Tiramisu or Tarte Tatin?" No hesitation, he replied, "Tarte Tatin." I wasn't sure if he actually put the order in for us or not, but then it arrived at our table and it was delicious! Pear Tarte (8.65 Euros) with a side of ice cream. Not too sweet, with lovely spices in the pears. Cash only, always a line, but totally worth it!

Tender meat bursting with flavor with some mashed potatoes to soak up the sauce. I enjoyed the lamb as well, however a bit too much rosemary for me. Get the pear dessert. I have heard so many "rumours" about this restaurant being the best Vietnamese one in Brussels. I…read morehave always had my doubts about THE best Vietnamese restaurant, because of course nothing beats the home-made cuisine of my family, ;). However, I have to admit, veni vidi and I was vici. Definitely a really nice surprise. The restaurant is spacious, which you wouldn't expect when you see the entrance, so you're seated very comfortably. The decor is not mind-blowing, very classical style with some Asian touches. However not too cheesy either, so there is a right balance, giving it a relaxed setting. And the garden and terrace it has to offer will definitely attract more than one back to the restaurant during warm sunny days, I'm sure. However, this time, it was winter time. We were a group of all Vietnamese people so decided to order a bunch of very typical traditional dishes to check whether we'd be able to find this homey taste we always crave for. And we did! Appetisers consisted of (small) bowls of pho bo (beef noodle soup), bun bo hue (beef noodle soup of Hue), canh chua (Vietnamese sweet sour soup) and a beef tartare (special of the house). The pho bo tasted how it's supposed to taste. Knowing that it's not easy to achieve a perfect tasting broth, that was a big deal for me already. The canh chua was delicious, sweet and sour just at the right level. The beef tartare was amazing because of its taste but also of the originality, idea- and presentation-wise (4 portions presented on a sesame crisp, excellent!). The bun bo hue was a little disappointing though. It was just ok, because it was missing the kick in the taste. The broth seemed to be a little diluted taste-wise and not spicy at all. Also for both pho bo and bun bo hue, some of the essential veggies that add to the taste were missing. Not that of a big deal, but should all veggies have been offered, it would have even more convinced me about the quality and service if this restaurant, going for the extra mile. Now to the main dishes: bo la lot (beef wrapped in "lot" leaves, banh xeo (Vietnamese crepe, actually also an appetiser), cubes of monkfish, shrimp wrapped in bacon. The shrimp was definitely an unusual, but original dish: very tasty, cooked just right as to not being dry. Banh xeo was savoury, but maybe a little too crispy to my taste. My friend wasn't really convinced by the cubes of monkfish, but more because of the way of cooking (sautéed instead of grilled) than the taste. It did taste good. And then the bo la lot, that was a real success. Moist and tasty, just as how it's supposed to be. The presentation of all dishes also needs to receive some recognition. There is a noticeable effort to make the dishes already savoury to the eye. 1 extra star for making the food experience already more enjoyable thanks to this, because we all know that we do not only eat with our stomach, but also with our eyes. And then dessert. Well, it always seems hard for a Vietnamese restaurant to come up with a traditional dessert menu. The Vietnamese do have some delicious desserts, but they might look and taste very unusual to the not-used-and-not-adventurous-customer maybe? However, this restaurant managed to put 2, which isn't too bad, especially when they were really good. One was the banana beignets flambeed in rice wine (amazing to the eye, but too much wine made the beignets a little too soggy) and one really typical Vietnamese pastry: the banh cam or sesame ball. This one has a coconut filling. I prefer the mung bean filling. However, it had the right crisp, not too greasy and the filling felt light. So very tasty indeed. What about the service? I would say classy without going over the top so you could still feel very much at ease, friendly, fast but not rushed. I definitely liked it. So, it's a 4 star for me because even though very impressed by the quality of this restaurant, some of the dishes didn't reach my expectation (but I'm probably too demanding for Vietnamese cuisine). And then there is the price too. It's definitely on the higher budget. But of course, you get what you pay for: excellent food that goes with the perfect service. This restaurant will definitely remain among my favourites.
