Had a lovely Sunday evening dinner at Plattesteen. The neighborhood is relaxed and charming. Every time I've been by this patio in the summer with good weather, the street vibe is perfect for enjoying a meal or drink and people watching. We ordered the meatballs (comes with fries!) and chicken Parmesan pasta. I was starving and just needed to eat, but next time I'd come in an order a glass of wine and relax. It's amazing to think this restaurant has been open since 1936! Our server was nice - but very brief since it was quite busy. In the end, we couldn't wait longer to pay, so we met him at the bar and paid there. read more

Last night in Brussels and after walking through the various Christmas Markets I found this little gem walking back to the hotel. One final dish of Carbonade Flamandes (Flemish Stew) with fries will complete my trip. Top it off with a Chimay Blue and it was an excellent dinner. Note that after I was seated (a single) they turned away at least a dozen people because they became extremely busy, I was very fortunate. My service was good, the stew was great. I was really surprised people rated this restaurant so low! I almost never write reviews for places I go on vacation, but I wanted to write one for this place just because my husband and I enjoyed it so much! We were visiting Brussels over New Years, and many restaurants were closed. The places that were open were either super-touristy, or had non-Belgian food. We just popped in on New Years Eve around 7:00 pm, thinking we would just get a drink. The bar has some cool vintage neon, the floor has a beautiful Art Deco looking design, and the whole place has a cute old-school look. We got a liter of house white wine, which was delicious. Then we shared a pot of mussels. They came with fries and cost 18 euro (which is also what the wine cost). They were great! Nothing fancy, but fresh and tasty. The other people around us had a variety of other Belgian-style diner food (the name of the restaurant actually means "flat top grill" in Dutch). Over all, considering we were in the tourist district, the prices were very reasonable and it didn't feel like a tourist trap at all. I think we were the only non-locals in there! We could take our time and yes, the waiters weren't super attentive, but we enjoyed just being left to ourselves. I would highly recommend this spot for a snack, a drink or even dinner! read more

We were looking for a non-touristy restaurant and happened to walk past "Plattesteen". A very friendly waiter welcomed us. We ordered traditional belgian food (moules, carbonnade, ...). The portions were quite generous and the taste was great. The waiters kept us entertained while we were waiting for the food and were very attentive. We went back the day after to try more of their traditional dishes and were not disappointed. There are so many tourist-traps in central Brussels. They literally drag you into their restaurants and ask lots of money for low quality food and service. But "Plattesteen" is totally opposite. Friendly service, great food and prices were reasonable. Bad, really bad behaviour! I wish nobody should experience what we've had last weekend. We arrived at 11.45 in there, and we directly ordered our meals, even if we knew the kitchen opens at 12pm. The room was empty. No problem, our drinks are quickly served. After 25 minutes, the waiter comes back, telling us there isn't spaguetti bolognaise today. 25 minutes to wonder if you should ask for another meal?? seriously? Then, we patiently waited for our meals. We suddenly hear in the back of the kitchen that our meals are not ordered yet. I stared at the waiter, he could not anwer, and I see him urging the cooker to prepare the meals (one lasagna + 1 steack, nothing difficult). It is 12.50. More than an hour to wait for... nothing! We stood up and went to pay our drinks (gentleman, I stay). I told the boss (he was there) that is unacceptable to wait for so long, to "forget" to tell people about the missing meals, etc. He shouted on me, he did not care. I stood calm, but firm. No more I will enter this place, they really don't care about client service and attention. PS: please note that I 've been really fan of this bar for years. But this cannot happen. Anytime. A very nice place to sit but that is about it. Service is bad to rude and the kitchen is to avoid. Years ago it was different but now the kitchen has to live from tourists who will never come back. I live in Brussels and went there on numerous occasions ... I all spare you the details. read more

The service here was terrible. The waiters seemed put out by anything at all. A request for butter or bread was met with a facial expression that showed disgust. We were very polite and always said please and thank you. For employees to show open disdain to paying customers is a way to ensure I'll never return. read more

Only thing good about this place was that the wine was cheap. Never saw anyone order food. The server immediately asked me to pay to the check, and they take cash only for anything under 12 euros. read more

This old fashion place looks nice but service and food can be much better. They serve easy dishes that are ok, but nothing special. Better to sit there have a drink and admire the crowd tat passes by then go there to eat. read more

This place used to be so full that it was difficult to get a table. During my visit this wasn't the case, so I should have known it was a sign. The service wasn't very friendly and the food was not at all what I expected. Delivered really quickly (because there were not at of customer at the moment of should have been extremely busy) I got a steak that was so burned that I thought I entered the fast food chain 'buffalo grill'. The pepper sauce was just some white sauce with green pepper added to it, sorry that isn 't pepper sauce. Keeping it short I was very disappointed. This used to be a place where you had good food for a decent price, unfortunately that isn't the case anymore. Then when you pay they only accept cash and credit cards. The in Belgium standard accepted normal paying cards bancontact were not accepted. When we paid cash the waiter also pretended he couldn't find any change, till he saw we would just wait till we get it. Conclusion : this was a very disappointing experience read more

I love this café because it is very classic!! Me and my boyfriend hung out here during Brussels pride festival and enjoyed it!! We just had drinks and hope soon we will have lunch or dinner there! The menu looks awesome!! read more

Great place during the summer. Outdoor seating, good service, good prices, good neighborhood, average food, nothing to complain about though. I go often for drinks, occasionally for food, inexpensive compared to a lot of places downtown. Very casual, good meeting spot. read more

A very cosy restaurant with superb and friendly service. Staff recognizes you after a few visits and remember what you like. As it is a calm restaurant and they have free wifi, it's also an ideal place to study. A nice terras and located in a nice neighborhood. read more
