My relatives there think I'm crazy for being so enamored of tiny little Surhuisterveen. To them, it's nothing much: just the neighboring town where they do their shopping. To me, it's a charming European town with a great mix of practical chain stores and wonderful little boutiques. Where better to watch the locals go about their business on foot and bicycle than Kolkzicht? Literally, it's something like View of the Kolk (the main drag that it's on). During the Summer months (or if you're a smoker), enjoy their outdoor seating for the best view. There are heat lamps if it gets chilly. When last I went, in early December of 2010, that was not an option. Inside it's lovely as well. I just stopped in for an afternoon coffee. I was seated by a window and could gaze outwards, left in peace, to my heart's content. I've been there for drinking and for dinner. Both were great. (Note to self: Too many Berenburgs really are too many!) Next time I'm going to need to try their lunch fare. Uitsmijter, anyone? The bar and restaurant are attractive in a classic way. We kept it classic this time: * The Ribs: Fall-off-the-bone tender as always. They don't over-sweeten the glaze, which I appreciate. * Le Cannibale Royale: The pulled pork on top of the patty is a heavy hitter, but the sauerkraut actually cuts through the richness perfectly. * The Fries: Still some of the most consistent in the city--thin, salty, and actually hot. Service was busy (it's Handboogstraat, so what do you expect?), but the staff was super chill and kept the craft beers flowing. We ended up asking another server about this and she went over to the kitchen to check on our order. Turns out - the order never came through in the computer system to the kitchen, so she had to tell him our orders so he could start making it. By the time we got our orders we were starving (since we were traveling all morning!). My grilled sandwich had lots of goat cheese, which was yummy, but wish it had more of the prosciutto. This was a wonderful way to wind down our day and enjoy a fantastic meal. There weren't many people in the restaurant but as we continued with our meal, more and more people stopped in. The waiters and waitresses went to lunch and yet our service was still wonderful. Our kids were given coloring books and colored pencils to color with while they waited for their meal. They loved their hot chocolates and they didn't make it too hot for our kids to enjoy, it was wonderful. The kids meal came with bitterballens, fries and salad and my kids licked the plate clean. I had the roasted chicken with dutch asparagus and chips, it was beautifully cooked. My husband had the lamb and again, perfectly cooked and we loved every bite. To finish our meal, we shared the cheese plate, with rum cake and ended it with some coffee.
