What a fabulous restaurant! If you are in search of a wonderful restaurant with a cosy feeling to…read moreit then this place will definitely dazzle your tastebuds. I loved the food, customer service, and ambiance. I definitely hope to revisit Poppe again sometime in the future. They are so flexible and courteous when it comes to any special requests or allergies. There is so much charm to this lovely and unique city that you will develop a great deal of affection for it.

This restaurant will not disappoint. I got the Blacksmith's Special (the chef"s special of the day) which started with a very creative pairing of a gumbo salad atop a mackeral tartare. The second course was a classic oxtail broth, which is perfect in it's deep, rich flavor coupled with the crisp bitterness of the scallions and soft earthiness of the Anoki mushrooms. The 3rd course was a pairing of a white fish with a seared tuna over sauteed fresh spinach - amazing! The meat course was another duet, this time of venison and wild boar both wrapped in bacon. They were served with Belgian mash and au grautin potatoes and a Waldorf salad. All so good that I didn't have an appetite for dessert! The service was as excellent as the food. Fons was particularly good at the wine pairings. Bottom line: Go and enjoy!

I'm here now. You should be here now. Yes. You…read more Excellent beer, nice people, nice weather what more is necessary? Nada. But seriously...Café Belgique is small and quaint. It's what makes it so pleasurable. The Gravenstraat, where it's located, is literally 10 feet across. The two benches attached to their front outer wall seats 8 comfortably and standing in the middle of the narrow street or against the opposing wall - with a drink - can bring them a hefty fine. So, they draw a line of demarcation (two feet in front of the benches) on the brick street with a piece of chalk which you are asked and required to stand behind. It just makes it all the more cozier. Inside, the bar seats 6-8 and the two tables, left and right of the door, seats 12-14. And that's it. Weather permitting, sitting on the benches is the best place to people watch in Amsterdam. Trust me.

I appreciated the correct glassware for each brew & the appropriate logo on the tap options & ample selections available. Staff were knowledgeable and tolerant with people coming in looking for something they'd like with no idea of what they like. I also appreciated the no groups policy, as they denied service to a party of 10 that had very clear potential to be disruptive. Perhaps most of all, I appreciated the RECORDS the dj was spinning- wowza & the decor was quirky.

UNF! You know what they say about being in Rome and all. Well, when in Haarlem the saying is, "When…read morein Haarlem, eat delicious Flemish fries." All right, maybe I made that up. But it's still true! I came to the Netherlands having been instructed by my Dutch friend to try some fries with "special sauce." I had no idea what a "special sauce" was, but suspected it had something to do with mayonnaise (I was wrong!). Regardless, when I spotted this wee chip shop in town with a steady stream of customers, as well as a cute location close to the grote markt, I added it to my must-visit list! By the time we actually got round to visiting after a long cycle, we arrived to find quite the line of like-minded individuals. Despite the queue we had placed our order in no time to the friendly guys behind the counter: one order of the most gargantuan fry cone I've ever clapped eyes on + special sauce. With fry cone in hand, we ambled off to savor our prize. And let me tell ya. This five-star review was well deserved. Those were some GOOD fries. The special sauce turns out to be some kind of tomato-based sauce with onions, and that coupled with the most perfectly crispy-soft fries made for the perfect snack. (Really, more of a meal for us, considering the size of the cone!) I wish that I could transport this fry shop to my current homebase, because I think I could easily sample every other sauce/fry combo they had on a daily basis. I'm particularly intrigued by the "Amerikain" sauce on offer. I don't know what that is, but it probably tastes like freedom. A must-visit when in the lovely city of Haarlem, hands-down! (Not necessary but also quite fun: standing in the gigantic wooden clogs just next door to take a cringe-worthy tourist photo while holding your prize. Not that we did that. No way!)

Based on other reviews I ordered small with special ketchup. 5 euros, mayonnaise, onions, and…read moreketchup. Quite tasty, and better than any I've gotten in Amsterdam. Oddly, at 1:45 they had run out of the little wooden forks--their reasoning was that they had run out since they were about to "changeover". Not sure to what since they were supposed to be open until 5.
