On a recent Friday while in the area, I wanted to make sure that I got out there to visit. After driving through Hunspach (one of the most beautiful villages in France), we made our way up the hill and through the woods until a military bunker began to emerge at the entrance of the Ligne Maginot. The place opened promptly at 2 PM, and after paying our admission, we started our self-guided tour. The whole fortification is an impressive feat of engineering. As I toured around, I tried to imagine the planning that went into building the whole place. There are 4 major stations on the tour with staff available to answer questions in a variety of languages. We meandered through the old kitchens and pantries, infirmary, and saw some of the old cannons that would still be functional today if needed. We took a good 2.5 hours to go through, but you could make it longer or shorter depending on what all you want to see. While you're in the area, it's definitely worth checking out!

While one should definitely try the Alsatian dish Flammekueche (or tarte flambée, a sort of pizza base with crème fraîche/fromage blanc , onions and bacon, which you share amongst the table), there is also a range of other regional meat dishes to choose from. Veggies fare well with the Gratinée, on which melted cheese replaces the bacon. As a starter, I would recommend the crudités, a selection of coleslaws and pickles, which is very popular in this part of France. And for dessert, choose the yummy sweet Flammekueche with apples and calvados. Prices are very reasonable and service is efficient and friendly.

This included a request for a credit card which we responded to. We even received a confirmation email from the restaurant the day before our visit. When we arrived, we were told by a stern faced young lady that there is no reservation. We must be at the wrong restaurant. We then showed the confirmation email. We were then told we hadn't provided credit card information. We then showed the confirmation we had. We were then told there is no table available. As gracious as we were through this exchange and requesting to have them make some accommodations of any sort, the women at the desk never cracked a smile, never apologized for any mistakes even as we continued to show proof of our reservation for that date (December 17, 2023) and that seating. She continued with a self-righteous attitude in the face of documentation to the contrary. She then begrudgingly got the Chef's wife to come out. This time only with acknowledgement of their errors. Not once was an I'm sorry uttered or any apology or reparation made. No offer of attending a different day, no accommodation of any sort. I truly find it shocking that an establishment with such a lack of service or quality of management has earned a Michelin Star. A Michelin Star used to carry a level of service and professionalism as well as the quality of the food and dining experience. I am saddened that I feel I can no longer depend on a Michelin Guide rating.

Wow! What a great find! I was craving some good Schnitzel, so I looked on Yelp, and this place came…read moreup. I read about it and saw it had a Michelin rating, and the reviews were great! Plus, it was out of the city center, more of a neighborhood place. As fate would have it, I was on a walk and saw that this place was minutes away. It was early, around 5 PM, and they were just opening for dinner. I strolled the streets until I arrived, and walked in through the back, and straight into their beautiful courtyard. The courtyard was beautiful, several tables all set and ready for the dinner crowd. I walked toward the restaurant and saw the daily special board, but there were no staff, at least outside. I checked out the board and saw they had Pfefferlingcremesuppe, which is one of my favorite foods! A minute later, a woman walked out and greeted me. I told her I knew it was a Friday, but would there be a table for 2 available? She smiled and said I could come now or at 8:30- I chose 8:30 as 5 pm was a little too early to eat. I left and came back at 8:30, the place was buzzing, and the courtyard was packed! My dining partner couldn't make it, so it was just me. The same woman was there to greet me, she smiled when she saw me and brought me to a table in the middle of the courtyard. I was seated and given a menu. I ordered a cold beer and perused the menu. While there were many great things on the menu, I already knew what I wanted, so when she returned, I ordered the soup and the Schnitzel. The soup was delicious and a large serving, and when I finished, my Schnitzel arrived, with fried potatoes and bacon, and a nice salad. Even though I was by myself, I immensely enjoyed the atmosphere; this place is all local, all having a great time, and friends greeting each other. Service was on point, attentive without being overbearing, and friendly! I had another beer and enjoyed the ambiance, and then paid my bill and walked back to my hotel.
