As one of my dining companions said: "If I wanted dog food covered in meal sauce, I would have…read moreordered that!"
Please, let me explain. It was a rainy day in Brussels and we needed to eat and get dry. Looking for reasonably priced mussels we found Le Grec. It really is adorable, but a bit corny in its decor. My husband ordered mussels, which were advertised on the outside. Sorry, the waitress said, we are out of mussels! Say what? No problem though. We all love gyros and they were on the menu. They did not come in a pita, the usual way we get them in the States. We are open to cultural differences, so we thought, why not as a platter. We all 3 ordered them and some water. Sorry, she said, we don't have water! Say what what??
The meal arrived. We were all looking for the strips of seasoned meat grilled vertically and cut very thin. What we had was a plate with lovely fries, a salad drenched in what we took to calling "meal sauce" and some tiny brown nuggets that were reminiscent of dry dog food, with some more meal sauce over them. Next to that was a pickled hot pepper with a different variety of meal sauce.
On occasion, if you chewed and breathed at the same time, there was a slight taste that hinted of gyros. Otherwise, it was just nuggets in meal sauce. Disappointing.
