We came here for dinner on Christmas Eve and weren't disappointed! It was a raining night. We didn't have umbrella, didn't make any dinner plans and had no place to go. We ran into this restaurant fully unplanned and didn't know what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised! The staff were very warm and friendly. We were seated by the window and had views from the outside and inside. The interior was very rustic and nice! We had sausage plate and grilled pig neck - first try! Both of them were very tasty! Adam was my server and he was the worst server I've had in my life. I saw him cussing out an elderly man with his family at a separate table in Czech before coming to my table. I a tourist in the country and ordered Old Czech Pie, wanting to try Czech food and thinking it was like a meaty Shepherds Pie. Someone served a desert to my table. I let him know I hadn't ordered desert. Adam came to my table, cussing me out. "Fuck you, you ordered Czech Pie" and slammed the food on the table. There was a clear misunderstanding on my part. I was confused about what I had ordered as I ordered off the wall, not off a menu. I was not refusing to pay, I simply thought they delivered desert to the wrong table. Adam made me feel uncomfortable. He put a finger in my face, with spit flying; and said to pay for the pie and leave. I asked for his manager and he laughed and said get lost. I found a manager, explained what happened when he walked up and said "look who is crying". The manager shrugged. I quickly paid and left. Neither should be in food service. 3.5 stars Not far from Old Town square is a historic pub from 1409 that doubles as a beer hall and full service restaurant. We ended up here after a long day of sightseeing around Prague and the kitchen is open late (taking food orders til 2am) and the pub is open until 4am even on a Tuesday night, err ... morning. I noticed that some of our entrees were a bit pricier than what we had at other traditional Czech restos near Old Town square, but the Pilsner Urquell here is appropriately priced at 36.90 kc for 0.5L!!! I had a rich and satisfying goulash with bread dumplings and the pork knee is HUGE. Good luck finishing that! Our waitress was really sweet and efficient, something worth mentioning since service in Prague tends to be really impersonal. Steer clear of the "free" (it's not free) pretzels hanging at the table. Stale and unhygienic, the germaphobe in me was silently screaming in my head. read more

As I've said on another site, in terms of food, this place is fine. I had a steak and my buddy had a lamb shank, they were both decent but not spectacular. The food here costs moderately more than other places in Prague but it's not terrible. However, their nickel and dime policies are terrible. There's pretzels and peanuts on the table that you would assume is free. They're not and you won't be informed beforehand. You would assume the bread is free. It's not. You will get charged for the bread even if you turn it away. It's apparently stated on the menu as such but you won't see it at first glance. My buddy and I paid the extra $5. The couple a few tables behind us called the cops over their bill. My point is this, the food is okay but why support the shady policies when there's plenty of cheaper and better tasting places nearby? read more

They tack on a charge for every little thing that is free at every restaurant in the world, they charged a fee for freaking silverware and napkins, and the server tried to tell me that this is standard in all of Czech republic, when I've been here for 5 days and have been going to restaurants every day. They put shitty stale and dry pretzels on the table as if it is free and then they charge you for it at the end. They even tried to charge me for a freaking to go box, and when I told her that I don't want it, she told me that I still have to pay for it because we ordered it. I wanted to start off by stating that I had no issues with my waitress. True, there was a bit of a communication barrier but with the help of iTranslate, at the very least, it was manageable. With that said, here's my review. Late Night in Prague is all about drinking, the food generally stops flowing around 22:00 - 23:00 (10pm - 11pm) so our options were limited. We were informed that when we set off for dinner, that we would be hard pressed. The only place that came up, that anyone knew of, was open till 02:00 (2am) and they were serving food up until then. We decided, to give it a shot. My wife and I were thinking, how bad could it be? First, the stories are true, the beer is cheaper then the water... and every establishment, if you're lucky, has their own blend of brew, this place, was like the rest, they had a house brand, and the usual brands you can find anywhere in Prague. Well I have to say, the suds helped... Oh and the pretzels on the tables, are not free, you're looking at 15Kc per Pretzel, or 45Kc for three! I have a friend, he's an amazing chef and happens to be from the Czech Republic. I've had his amazing goulash, so I feel that I've had a base line for what a Czech Goulash would be... Oh boy...what they served "traditional Czech Goulash" was nothing I've ever seen. If you know me, you know what I'd say next... "Tasted good going down!" but that's where that party ended. Now it 100% could be a case of my body just didn't like what I ate... Or something completely different... You'll have to eat there and decide... but 48 hours later, I'm just starting to straighten out and fly right! My wife, she ordered Fish and Chips... We've had it the other night, so we figured, it would be safe to have it again... Well this establishment does Fish and Chips totally differently. What we received, was something that looked more like a meat pie... Yes, it had Cod in it, but it also had BONES too... not just a few, A BUNCH... If you didn't know better, you were in for a dangerous dinner to say the least. Now this might be the normal in the Czech Republic, heck, this might be a norm for Prague, however, it's not for us, and we didn't care for the meal. Oh, if you order Onion Rings, it's a wonderful beer batter that is just dreamy, the only issue is you get 6 VERY SMALL RINGS (that's it! Jack-In-The-Box in America serves more onion rings in a standard order, just let that sink in for a moment). U Vejvodu is a Czech pub situated in Prague's old town, serving malty Czech beer and local food in generously filling portions. Traditional Czech food is designed to match with its beer - it is hearty, solid and meaty. The beer, for anyone who does not yet know, is about as fine as you can get anywhere. The speciality of U Vejvodu is its koleno - or monster "pork knee" - a marinaded and roasted ham hock served with mustard and horse radish. Take a seat, order your first "pivo" (beer) of the night and one of these pork knees, then sit back and prepare yourself for a porkathon. This place is perfect to get this special Czech cuisine experience. The highly awarded Restaurace U Vejvodů has this traditional Czech brewery atmosphere with many rooms and wings as well as copper kettles all around. There are plenty of halls making this place ideal for large groups, but it won't do any harm to reserve your table in advance, since the Restaurace U Vejvodů is a very popular place. On the wall there is even a flat screen TV showing football matches. There are two levels in the main hall. So you choose where you want to take a seat. The opening hours and kitchen are everyday from 10 am to 2 am. The staff is swift and friendly, and very able to consult you in English what to order. When it comes to ordering I recommend to get yourself a Svickova. This is one of and probably the most typical Czech dish you get in Czech Republic. Many of my Czech friends always dream of this dish when they are abroad, since this beef cutlet in this mild-creamy sauce has this sweet taste and comes with sliced bread dumplings as side and cranberry jam and an extra whipped cream. We had the pork knee, it was very tender, worth a try. We also had beef sirloin, bad! It was so tough! (The sauce was tasty tho). I will never come back here. We were charged for utensils (do they expect their customers to bring their own utensils or eat with their hands? If so, no wet towels were given!) This is one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. They provide no food customization for allergens and it took about an hour and a half for the food to arrive. Despite all of the warnings, we ate a pretzel. It was late at night, we were super hungry, and they were just right there. We were wondering if they were special, or extra good. They are not. We only took one and thank goodness because it took two of us and beer to wash it down. Seeing both of us eating pretzel they did, however, charge us for two. On the plus side, the place is pretty big and can accommodate some pretty big parties. We saw several pass through as we watched sports and drank beer. The food was only ok though. This is a nice place to enjoy authentic Czech cuisine. I had the "Bramborovy knedliky" or potato dumplings with smoked meat. And it was delecious! Veronika was our waitress and she was amazing. One of our dishes had a hair in it but that was quickly resolved. My only gripe is that the advertise on their door they accept AMEX (American Express) however when we tried to pay they told us they did not accept AMEX. Horrible experience... tourists beware! First and foremost the service was awful and our particular server was very sneaky about hidden charges and attempting to add on tip to the bill. Meals are all served without sides in addition all meals include a cover charge (to cover "silverware, napkins, and bread") when we asked about it our server replied "no cover, no eat" this is very different from any restaurant I've ever been to. In addition to hidden charges on the bill she intentionally attempted to confuse us so we would pay above average tip... oh, and if that wasn't enough the pretzels on the table are charged automatically to your bill for the ones you consume even though they weren't ordered and were sitting there for hours. Service downright awful and food wasn't any better. Stay away, the only good part was the beer. This is a tourist trap! read more

A typical and large Czech restaurant located in the city centre (it occupies several big rooms and when you're there for the first time, you can easily get lost while walking through or when looking for a bathroom). The menu selection is good offering for instance different types of meat prepared in several ways. However, the food tastes average, and the prices in comparison with the quality of dishes are high. This place is popular among both local people and tourists, probably because of the beer. The service can be slow, but in general is ok. read more

Prices would be okay, but: you're automatically charged for cover and service (and not just a little), which is entirely unusual and unacceptable in a place like this. And you better check twice what you're billed for! The only good thing I can say about U Vejvodu is that the food is quite good (that explains the 2 stars). But that's about it. A wonderfully warm and inviting bar and restaurant, the U Vejvodu was our best find in Prague. The restaurant part is downstairs and seats plently while the bar is upstairs and seats around 40. This is where we spent our time. It was fantastic - went in and tried to order a beer at the bar and was stoutly told to 'dit down' by the head barman, who waved us towards a table using the teatowel he had slung over his forearm. Ooo-er, we thought, but went with it and sat at a table right next to the bar. This turned out, in hindsight, to be a wicked stroke of luck. Every time our glasses were drained, new ones appeared magically! I love table service. I wish we had it in more Cardiff. I also loved the giant pretzles hanging on a wooden stand. Every table has them and you can tuck straight in for 15 Krown. The bar is run by the butcheresque behemoth of a guy behind the bar (went there on two occasions and though the bloke was different each time, they could have been brothers in stature and scaryness) who pours the beers and slams them down on the shiny steel bartop for the waiters/waitresses to distribute. Try asking for something like a campari or a cocktail and see the reaction. At one point, the manager had to be called to deal with a 'mixer' situation! What makes this all the more impressive is that the bear barman stands beneath a mammoth copper dome that hangs above the bar (which is actually a vent, sucking out the smokey air) and wears an apron better suited to a butcher than a barman. It's leather and has too many pockets! Although appearing austere, all of the bar staff were actually lovely - I can vouch for all of them apart from the bear barmen (I was too scared to look at either of them) - and they had great fun laughing at me and my partner as we tucked into one of their specialities, knuckly of pig on a spit with various spicy dipping sauces and bread. This dish is a delight and i would recommend it to all, but only if you don't mind getting your hands greasy. There's just no way to eat it with a knife and fork! I was so full after the pork that I had no room to sample the Carpathian Cake that was on offer. It's aparently filled with herbs to stimulate a good mood and has 'aphrodisiacal qualities' and is made from an ancient Carpathian recipe. I'll have to save that experience for next time! Other things to note - when we went, it was January 09 and you could still smoke inside (there was no ban) and £1 was around 30 CZ Krown. Making our lovely tankards of Pilsner beer less than a quid each. Reeeeeeesult. In fact, the whole evening cost us around £20, including the knuckle of pork and 11 small beers. Special mention has to go to Mirek, the 1/2 Czech 1/2 Canadian gentleman barman that told us to 'sit down' when we came in. He turned out to be funny and friendly and served our table very attentively. He's known as 'the translator' because of his great english. When we were oggling someone else's knuckle of pork he chuckled at us and asked if we wanted to 'try one'. Being typically British, we shook our heads and quickly said 'no, no, it's OK'. Ten minutes later, we ordered our own! I loved this place so much I didn't even mind the fact that the music played in the bar was from MTV's floorfiller selection.
