Bathrooms were clean and smelled amazing! I didn't get the attendant's name but you can tell that she takes her job seriously and wants to represent cleanliness of the rest area, at all times. Vending and drink machines are available. A place to walk your dog is also available. Make sure to pick up after yourself. Smiling faces, Beautiful places!! I miss South Carolina! 04/13/2025

This is the Santee Rest Area along I-95 North at mile marker 99 in Santee, which is in Orangeburg County, SC. This isn't a big rest area, but it gets the job done. It is located just south of the Lake Marion Bridge on I-95. Upon entry, trucks will go to the right (back) while cars go to the left (front) of the rest area. The rest area is open 24 hours daily. My visit to this rest area was on August 27, 2022. As I noted in the intro, this is not an overly large rest area. This may be due to how close it is to Lake Marion. Even though it isn't overly big, there is still enough room to get things done. Restrooms and vending are available inside the rest area building. The restrooms were in working order and could tell that they are regularly maintained. After taking care of business inside, I went outside for a bit to see the sights around the rest area. There is still a good amount of open space to walk around, stretch the legs, and more. There are covered and uncovered picnic tables available here too. There are plenty of trash cans, and they also have a pet waste station, where you can get a bag to clean up any mess your pet may make during the visit. There is a trash can right there for you to throw it away too. This rest area also has another spot here called the Liberty Garden. It was dedicated exactly one year after the September 11, 2001 terror attacks in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. There is a fountain in the middle. There is a quote rounding the inside of the garden, and the different presidents are also listed on the ground too. It was dedicated by the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Even though it doesn't say directly, I do believe it is a dedication to those who were affected in the September 11, 2001 attacks. Overall, this is a very nice rest area. Even though some can think it may be unassuming, there is actually more to this rest area than you think. If your travels take you this way and need a break, it is totally worth making that stop before moving on with your travels.

Rest area near Vance - visited - 18Dec2023 4 stars This seems like a very simple rest area along I-95 heading north but it has a very unique feature. It is one of the many rest areas along the interstate. It is easy pull off with car parking first before the main building and truck parking just beyond it. There are two structures amid the many trees that dot the grounds. Look around and you will be surprised by the curved stone bench and the saying right outside the restroom. It is engraved stone with the saying, "Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty." Most people just pass by this but I found it a very nice break and one that makes this stop a special one. One of the buildings holds the restrooms with men's and women's restrooms on opposite sides of it. There is a second smaller building next in front of the car park that has machines for drinks and food. There are pavilions with open-air covered tables up the hill from the parking lot and restrooms. This was a very nice place to stop and take a break

You can walk inside and chat with an employee, grab coupons and tourist info, or learn more about the state. The indoor area is closed on holidays and in the evenings. The bathrooms were open, but they were not clean and are small. With only four stalls, this isn't a great place to stop for a bathroom break if you're traveling with a large party. The vending machines have a lackluster selection. If you're hungry, stop at a convenience store or fast food. South Carolina's rest areas aren't fancy, but it's easy to get on and off the highway for a quick bathroom break, which was all we needed.

This rest area is located on northbound I-95 at mile marker 139 near Lynchburg in Sumter County, South Carolina. It is a right-hand exit off the interstate, making it easy to access while traveling north. There are separate parking sections for large trucks and cars. The car parking closest to the road and the truck parking farther off. The main building is a single-story brick building with a shingle roof that looks wheelchair accessible. It houses clean and functional restrooms. There is a vending building to the north that is also a single-story affair. It offers snacks and drinks behind locked bars that did not give me a very safe feel for the stop. Shaded areas are available all around the site, along with some picnic tables scattered throughout for resting or eating. The entire area was free of trash during our visit, contributing to a pleasant stop. While it's not the fanciest rest area, it does provide the essentials for a quick break during long drives. Overall, I would recommend this as a decent place to stop on your travels through South Carolina. Enjoy.

(At the time of writing this review, the Yelp listing is named "Rest Area I-95 North." To clarify, I'll submit a name change to "Rest Area I-95 Mile Marker 139" because this listing captures reviews, photos, etc. from both sides. Hopefully, the Yelp moderators approve.) If traveling south on I-95 into SC, this is the first rest area after the Dillon Welcome Center near the North Carolina border (mile marker 195). In other words, after the welcome center, it's about 56 miles until this rest area. After this rest area, the next rest area south is at mile marker 99, about 40 miles away. It's another welcome center, the Santee Welcome Center. If traveling north on I-95 in SC, mile marker 99 has a rest area. It's not a welcome center like the southbound side. According to Google Maps and Yelp, this rest area has an address in the town of Lynchburg, SC. However, Lynchburg is actually 16.5 miles up 95 and highway 58 in Lee County. For navigation, on Google Maps, the southbound listing for this rest area is named "Sumter County, SC Rest Area" and the northbound rest area is named "Rest Area I95 North." The southbound side of this rest area has a small log cabin. Above the entrance, a sign reads, "Sumter County Welcome Center. 'The Gamecock County.'" Sumter County was named after Revolutionary War general Thomas Sumter (1734-1832). He was nicknamed the "Fighting Gamecock." That's where the University of South Carolina Gamecocks' nickname and mascot came from. We stopped at the northbound side on a recent trip from Georgia to North Carolina. It was fine. The rest area was definitely showing its age. The grounds and facilities appeared clean and well maintained. We visited around 2:15pm on a Saturday and I saw staff working on-site. This is a small rest area with basic amenities -- vending machines and picnic tables (mostly uncovered). Along with using the restrooms, my wife and I had a bite to eat in the car. We parked in front of the refreshments structure. It was peaceful. According to the SCDOT, South Carolina has nine welcome centers and 19 rest areas.
