But I was in the ER with pneumonia Friday, 4/7, and Dr. Burca's office called me Tuesday to ask how I was & to schedule a followup visit. THAT was impressive. Today (4/14) was that follow up, and she is extraordinary. She went over my tests and records from ER, and past records from my previous primary. She was thorough, intelligent, and kind. She recommended a pulmonologist for my prior lung issues, recommended a follow up in a month to be sure the pneumonia was gone, and changed my June appointment to a wellness check & physical. Meanwhile, she asked me to please call if I got worse or needed anything. SHE is impressive! Her office staff is friendly and efficient. Erin was the one who called me Tuesday and I met her today when I checked in. Shameeka took my vitals before I saw Dr. Burca. Tracy checked me out, making my future appointments and giving me paperwork for referral & tests. All three women were cordial and skillful.

My husband had surgery Dec 8, 2016. Before going in he had been having very high blood pressure, had several episodes of kidney stones, was in chronic pain especially his heels, knees, elbows & wrists, he battled chronic fatigue, sleep apnea, heart burn & extreme moodiness. Up to being on the stretcher going into surgery I requested pillows to help prop up his knees & lay across his lap to rest his hands on to try to make him more comfortable which he still was NOT. After going back to prep for surgery, have surgery & wake up in recovery approx an hour my husband was in better mood! He had his IV out & was talking. I asked him if he needed his pillows back & he said he was fine & wasn't hurting at all. When discharged a couple hrs later he was ready to eat! We went back to the hotel by shuttle & ate in their restaurant. He ate mild hot wings, blacked fish & seasoned veggies with lemonade to drink. Fasting for surgery and being about 4 pm (this is food & drink he generally can't tolerate on a normal day!!!) I was surprised he did well. When we got back to the room we played a full game of rummy with him wide awake (out of character with his usual preference to nap without being in surgery). After the game of cards he wanted Pizza so I ordered a pepperoni Pizza with great warning! But he tolerated it!!! That night he tried to get us up & on the road to head back to the Panhandle of Florida which took us 6 hrs to get there due to road construction & heavy steady traffic. When we got home he proceeded to go out to work in his garage! He has surgery less than 24 hrs ago. He has so much energy compared to before. He (we) now sleep all through the night without to 10-20 episodes of apnea that waked us up before each night. His blood pressure is now within normal limits & NO MORE bone & joint pain. He had a small growing lesion above his left eye lid for a solid year BUT it disappeared. I am hopeful he won't have anymore kidney stones. My happy, friendly husband is back! He had been missing for 12-14 yrs! This group of persons that work there were all extremely kind & informative. They answered questions I did not think of yet. The doctors are extremely confident about their knowledge & surgery of the Parathyrold. While we were there waiting for him to come from surgery we met people from New York and out West. One had previous surgery at a Mayo clinic but they were not complete in their surgery & she needed another so they referred her there. I am so THANKFUL for their practice & expertise! Worth the surgery!!!!!

My problem is the hose kept falling out of my nose while I slept. I know that there are different mask for the oxygen, but the nurse would not even listen to what I had to say. When I called to talk to James or Dr. Eckardt his nurse would not allow me talk to them. Instead she played Doctor, telling me that I had to use the oxygen that went into my nose and that I should tape the hose too my face so it would not fall out. She said that they could not do anything for me and that if I do not use what they prescribed he would probably have a stroke or heart failure and die. I called four times and she would not let me talk to the Dr. or James. Just too bad. I would not recommend this practice to anyone. Very poor.

They have their own sleep lab on the first story of this hidden two story building off of Belcher just north of NE Coachman. After all the formalities were observed with a rather extensive team of medical and office types here, I was prescribed the appropriate sleep equipment and so on. I don't like that I have to use the stuff, but since I must, I can't think of a better MD to deal with than Frank Averill. He's a bit eccentric but he is also a very good and well seasoned pulmonologist. He's assembled a good bunch of folks (and it is quite a big number in the team) to work here. As you can imagine, this practice is quite busy and thriving...I wouldn't expect you'd fare well here if you're in dire need of quick service though. As most specialists go, he books out well in advance. As is also the case with specialist types, forget about the clock when you finally DO get here. Pack a lunch or a snack instead! Nice office with a clean but homey look to it also. Sleep lab is also quite nice as I recall as well. One odd bit of information. The doctor's wife also has a big hand in this place and helps run the show. She is a devout Catholic and that is obvious in every nook and cranny of the office. Lots of religious statues, pictures and the like in the second floor office and downstairs in the lobby. Off to the right of the entrance downstairs is a full blown chapel as well...I must tell you that the formal name of the practice is St Francis Medical Institute. So the chapel and much of the "decor," for lack of a better word, is Franciscan. It really has no bearing on the level or kind of care that one should expect, of course. It's a simple observation for the sake of passing along information to the prospective patient reading this review... That said, Dr Averill is board certified in four different specialties according to the information gleaned from my visits here. Allergies, immunology, sleep disorders, pulmonology plus all the clinical research kinda makes this practice one stop shopping for many people who have allergenic afflictions, breathing battles or immunodeficiency issues of sundry sorts. I'm not 100% sure of why I don't give five stars but four isn't quite enough either. The office is on the second floor up a VERY steep set of stairs. There is a very slow elevator off to the right at least. That's where the half star comes into play. So here goes my standing gripe...I wonder when Yelp is finally gonna wise up and make it easier or at least POSSIBLE to award half stars?!!?

Update 1.5 years out: since the procedure. I rechecked my labs a few times. My calcium was fine…read moreeach time, but my pth was slightly low. I was instructed to continue to take calcium for that low lab. I also continued vitamin d since it was trending up but still low. I was worried that I was going to have to take calcium for the rest of my life. But thankfully, my recently pth levels are normal. My vitamin d is finally in the normal range too. It isn't in the optimal normal range but it will get there. I just wanted to share that incase someone freaks out about pth being low after the procedure. So hopefully my labs will stabilize and continue to stay normal. Will update if anything changes. The scar is barely visible too. The incision was made at my natural fold. It healed nicely.

They offer walk-ins for shots starting at 8AM-3:30pm. Parking is decent but it can get crowded during the middle of the day, so plan accordingly. The staff is friendly and for the most part pretty on the ball with getting you in and out. I've only had one instance where I waited a little longer, but it wasn't too bad. I'm glad they're here and able to give me injections for my allergies. I'd recommend giving them a try!
