After a few years of trying out different churches, temples and gatherings, I gave up. None of what I explored fit what I was looking for. I was looking for a place with educated, open minded people who loved kids, were on a quest for truth and justice, didn't believe in one brand of God, and didn't seek to control people with guilt and fear. Then, about 10 years ago, I discovered Unitarian Universalism - people just like me! Very liberal in their thinking, socially conscious, justice oriented, people of action. Lots of different religious backgrounds or none at all. I went to Emerson for 7 years before becoming a member. Having been traumatized as a kid by evangelical relatives, I was totally turned off by the idea of church membership. In fact, I had a hard time saying the word, "church" because of what I went through as a kid. After Emerson stepped up and took care of my family while I went through treatment for late stage breast cancer 3 years ago, I decided it was time to let go of my old hang ups and become a member. This congregation literally fed us. They brought us meals every night. They covered the costs of sending my son to youth camp in the mountains for a week so he could get out of the house, get a break from cancer, and be with teens who he had a lot in common with. That's "church". If you're like me, and are turned off by "religion" but would really like to be part of a spiritual community that doesn't leave anybody out or tells you what to believe, I encourage you to check Emerson out.

As I got to know individual members during the social hours I discovered that this is a community of people whose values I share: loving, liberal, open, supportive, deeply spiritual, curious, activists, committed to building strong families and just communities in which individuals can grow and realize their full human potential.

I have been feeling like the enemy or the devil has been attacking me. And I've morning a lost from a relationship, my cars engine broke down on me, listening to family drama and I'm just like what did I do to deserve this. I am blessed enough to have friends to come and get me to take me to church, and I even walked back home after. Took me 3 and half hours to walk but I needed that. There was plenty of parking in the garage, come early especially since this Saturday they had this performance of the passion play. Great singing and performance by everyone. We took communion. I'm torn by the way I feel. I feel like there is an angel and a demon on my shoulders that tugging on my heart, mind and spirit. I want to do right. So god has it on my heart to lean on him while I am feeling so low. Not going to lie I miss my daughter so much.

I wish I had something good to say about today's experience. I went at 11:55am to pick up my child…read more The reason for me needing to pick up MY child is not up for discussion with anyone! Why am I being told I could not get my daughter that I had to wait 5-10 minutes. During those first 5 minutes another parent comes who received a text for their child. Granted that's more urgent she was assisted ASAP. Even tho I was there before that parent I was never met with let me find someone to assist you getting you your child, I was just told I have to wait. When that parent came out with their child I asked the woman who helped her (the receptionist), why my child can not be brought out to me if I have to go. She said I could only help one parent at a time, to which I responded I was here before the woman you just helped. Finally at 12:17 she takes my portion of ticket to go get my child. That had been over the 5-10 minutes I was initially supposed to wait. I do not appreciate my daughter being held hostage at the convenience of staff! Proper communication would have been nice but I guess you have to come at these workers rude so they could attend to you. Because when I was asking nicely NO ONE wanted to help. My daughter did not walk out of shepards kids until 12:23!!!! Not even then did they open for the other parents to get their children. I also don't appreciate the receptionist assuming I'm lying that I'm picking up my daughter, my daughter was confused as to why she was being questioned on who I was! 28 minutes is how long it took for me to get my daughter from shepards kids! There won't be a next time unfortunately!

The church itself is pretty small compared to what I'm used to, but it worked for remembering who had passed away. They didn't have a pastor or priest speak, they left it up to the family to do what they wanted, and they just had friends and family say prayers and tell stories. A really nice and simple way to celebrate his life. The reception was down the hall in the same place. Tables set up all around and plenty of food for everyone who attended. Sandwiches, salads, veggies and fruits with cookies and a variety of drinks.

Congregants here, staff, and the ones who claim to to raised up by this ministry in the word are more like moral perfectionist than saved Christians..That's a pecking order largely constructed by a gradi g scale based on how much you sin, not how much your forgiven. Religious, and religion is man trying to make himself credible by how much others sin compared to his sin. I'm not the type who would fit in, theres to much emphasis on moral discipline being requisite I stead of the inward transformation that God does by the power that reconciles all things to the Father through Jesus Christ..
