This reptile show is an annual occurrence in the Sacramento area. This was the 15th iteration of this event, and my first time as an attendee. It's a great exhibit of exotic pets and all the supplies you'll need to care for them successfully. The animals featured range from the staple reptiles -- mostly snakes and various lizards, but also turtles and tortoises -- to newts to tarantulas to emperor scorpions. The primary focus of this event was on the pet trade, so there's not very much by way of conservation or education. Most of the exhibits were vendors trying to sell their valuable captive-bred animals. Most of these vendors were focused on snakes, including the mightily popular boa constrictors, ball pythons, and corn snakes. Less common were sand boas, kingsnakes, etc. There was one rainbow boa at the convention that I noticed (he was my favorite), one green anaconda (with a warning stating that he would eventually be "HUGE"), and probably numerous other species that I can't name (most were not labeled). Most of these snakes are very young and the prices vary greatly from a couple hundred dollars to nine grand, depending on the color variation, but there were adults in breeding condition that were available for purchase. Lizards featured included the common leopard and crested geckos, various skinks, iguanas, chameleons, and some monitors. There was also a venomous snakes section which never fails to impress. There was a couple of areas where kids could pet some large tortoises, and a display of alligators (including the infamous albino) just sitting in their handlers' laps. Not sure how I felt about that, since I'd be concerned about the message that they're sending to kids about alligators as appropriate pets, but I'm sure they were rescued. As a disclaimer, I have not had very much by way of species identification, so I probably did not do this species list any justice. A major problem that I had not anticipated was the overwhelming popularity of the event. My friends and I tried coming on Saturday around noon, but the line was so long as to be ridiculous (it doubled back on itself perhaps multiple times and stretched the length of the convention center. Save yourself some trouble and just come on Sunday -- the lines are much, much shorter and you won't have to deal with the crowds inside the convention itself (space is rather limited, and I can definitely see pushing around exhibits to be a problem). Another minor inconvenience is that they only take cash payments for admission. This is not too much of a problem since there are ATMs just inside the lobby, but it helps to know ahead of time for planning purposes. In short, this is a great family event, and the kids will be very impressed!

The phone in the room was always there in case we got stuck (and in 1-2 instances where it was actually possibly a mechanical function issue), so HIGHLY recommend you use that if you think you need assistance. We made it out with 2 minutes to spare. The staff was also very friendly!

It wasn't a long wait at all, and everything moved smoothly from there. One of my favorite things about this place is their leaderboard system--it adds a fun competitive edge! They feature the top three all-time best times as well as the top three for the month, which definitely motivates you to think fast and try to beat the clock. There were several themed rooms to choose from, and you can tell a lot of thought went into designing each one. I've done about five other escape rooms at different locations, and I have to say--the system this place uses is incredibly well-integrated. The way they handle clues and game flow made the experience smooth and immersive without ever pulling us out of the action. The staff was awesome--super friendly, funny, and clearly passionate about what they do. They actually create the rooms themselves, which makes it feel even more unique and personal. At the end, we were given a stamp card so we can come back and try the other rooms--and you bet I'll be returning to get every last stamp. Highly recommend this spot for both first-timers and seasoned escape room fans.

Excellent stop to cool off after wandering the Saturday Sacramento Midtown Market!…read more SITREP Located right on K Street a block down from the Midtown Market's main channel up & down 20th Street, ForePlay is a fun stop that is full of LOTS of distractions of fun and drink to escape the heat. THE SETUP It would be imprecise to call ForePlay just an arade because it also brings in some of the fun carnie elements you'd catch at a State Fair. One of the more eclectic elements is the axe-throwing range! Tons o' fun. FULL BAR The most beneficial aspect of this stop was the full bar, which - after a couple of hours of heat in the sun while wandering the Midtown Market stalls - was a wonderful treat. Coool beer! There is random parking along the streets and some rare off-street parking lots, but limited parking during events. THE LOWDOWN This is a great stop from to duck into from the heat, or for groups making the rounds. I enjoyed watching a bridal shower when I was here!

Sad to report this place wasn't somewhere I plan to return…read more Half the pinballs machines didn't work. Three of the machines got the ball stuck and wouldn't allow me to keep playing. With each game costing one to two dollars I felt a little ripped off I couldn't even finish my game of three balls. The pool table me and my friend played on was quite frankly disgusting. Tons of stains on the table and felt peeling. The balls all chipped and scratched. Also there was some issue with something being stuck when the game was first setup with my friend putting it together but I wasn't paying attention. He had to flag down a worker to help resolve the issue. I get it, things are pricey these days, so a newer business has to find a deal when they can, but at least find a way to improve an already overly used item. I don't expect brand new pool tables, but at least tables that look like the business cares Not to mention the ground and walls were just dirty and gross. Seemed like nobody is really cleaning the place. All the tables tops seemed sticky (if you know you know). The velvet lounge just kinda seemed like a random thrown together area, but maybe on a slow Monday it didn't feel right with lack of people. The workers were great and gave great service, just sadly all the half run down amenities that is supposed to make this place great, makes it pretty lackluster. I guess come if you want the axe throwing?

There aren't many bars around that combine drinks with classic arcade games, so it's refreshing to have a place where you can do both in one spot. They have a great variety of games to choose from--everything from classic fighting games and Pac-Man to Guitar Hero and pinball. I also really love the extras like the photo booth and air hockey, which add to the fun and make it easy to spend more time there with friends. It's strictly 21+ (not a bar and grill situation), which is honestly a plus--no kids running around. You do have to head down a set of stairs to get inside, so just be mindful if you're wearing heels. There's also a security check at the entrance where they verify IDs before letting you in. The place is almost always packed, especially on weekends. Because of that, I usually don't stay too long when it's crowded since it can start to feel a bit claustrophobic. Drinks are reasonably priced and taste fine--no real complaints there--but when it's busy, you definitely have to squeeze your way in to catch a bartender's attention. I've never had a bad experience here when going with friends, and it's generally a fun time in a group. That said, I'm not sure how enjoyable it would be if you were solo drinking, as the vibe really leans toward social, high-energy hangouts. Still, a fun spot with a cool concept that's worth checking out.

Lantern Street Festival - Beautiful Lighted Lanterns...

Beautiful Time Celebrating Ancient Cultural Diversity in Sacramento!…read morehttps://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/lantern-street-festival-sacramento?select=wSSUqMiUI0sCyIE8XEcSpw&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w SITREP Fremont Park in Downtown Sacramento became the site of the lovely Lantern Festival. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/lantern-street-festival-sacramento?select=Ay_BfKSvzAy8Nd9X9w4rzw&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w THE SETUP Sacramento has a large Chinese community - and has had one nearly since the founding of this city, and definitely since the founding of The Great State of California. The Spring Lantern Festival ("Lantern Festival") is a Chinese festival celebrated historically on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar Chinese calendar. It marks the final day of the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations. Fremont Park was the site for this year's festival and became a hub of activity with Decorated Lanterns, a music concert, a food truck convo, and so much more fun! https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/lantern-street-festival-sacramento?select=ud0mxk_sXgV9GGoSp91EdQ&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w LIGHT TOYS! A festival such as this DOES inspire some marked "branch-offs" when it comes to pleasing the sensibilities of children: many lighted toys make their way into the festivals. Many kids brought their light-sabers contributing to the visual array of lights. There are also some creations that I swear are Harry Potter-inspired, such as the "Lighted-Wands" that come with their own lighted globe on the end of the wand. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/lantern-street-festival-sacramento?select=a2aUOqyuUd10pTam9dVN9w&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w ANCIENT HISTORY As early as the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC), the Lantern Festival has been imbued with great significance for children, who go out at night, carrying their paper lanterns, and solving riddles that adults have placed on the lanterns. In those ancient times, lanterns were plain, and often only the nobility could afford the making of large ornate lanterns. These days, lanterns feature many different embellishments with intricate designs, including being in the shape of animals or symbols. THE WEST Because of our significant Chinese communities all over the United States, including here in California, the Lantern Festival is a significant Cultural Celebration. It is noted in many other Western countries as well, especially in cities with a large Chinese community: for example, in London, the Magical Lantern Festival (the largest Lantern Festival outside of China) is held annually. THE LOWDOWN A beautiful celebration giving we Sacramentans to enjoy some more great cultural diversity with our neighbors.
