The staff were very friendly in the beginning, however, I moved in to a property that hasn't been even cleaned, with dust, spiders, spiderwebs, and previous tenants' items and HAIR all over the flat. I ended up sleeping on a friend's couch and having to clean it (and pay £80 for carpet cleaning) myself! Unluckily for me I had already booked a holiday for the week after my move-in, and not only these issues (which I have stubbornly outlined in my emails) were not only not dealt with, but they were not even updated on the inventory as they should have been! The staff generally seemed to act as if all this was 'normal' and I was just making a big deal out of it. But when I handed back my keys two weeks ago (leaving the flat much much cleaner than it was), thinking it cannot get any worse, they decided to charge me nearly £500 for these issues that I have been reporting for the past year! On a side note, throughout my tenancy I became ill and my partner agreed to move in with me from abroad. It took Martin & Co three months to prepare a new agreement (charge: £200) for us to sign. At that time, we were financially constrained as we had to live off my student loan since he could not get a job without this tenancy agreement. After two months waiting, my partner got very sick, sparking high fever and we couldn't see a doctor since he wasn't registered here, or afford to see a doctor privately as he couldn't work here without these documents. Helpless and frustrated, I emailed Martin & Co explaining the situation, and asking how long this will take. We had a response a few weeks later asking us to come in and pay the fee in order to sign. But when we went there, were told in front of everyone that they will not let my partner sign the agreement since "he moved to the UK to seek medical treatment". I have never encountered staff so rude and offensive (I don't want to use the word "racist", but it does have this vibe).

This showed a lot of honesty, and right from the beginning they were very pleasant to deal with. Everytime I go into the office i feel very welcome and we always have great chats! Yes they are a bit more relaxed than most agencies, but I like that, it's a bit different to the typical grumpy agents you get, you can have a laugh with them! Chancellors is a well to do housing agent - this one on the cowley road. They find housing for both…read morestudents and professionals in the oxford district. There are numerous other chancellors for instance the one in headington. This agent is alike to all the others in terms of house selection, fees, deposits etc...but i have marked chancellors (who i rented with once for a year) lower than their neighbouring premier lettings, because of the staff. I do not know why but the staff were always slightly pretentious in this location. They speak snottily and look down upon students. They expect forms to be completed in a matter of minutes and do not give you alot of time to get referee details/ deposit amounts together. They also took a very long time to get someone out to fix things or look at things in the house. And its worth saying that even though the house i rented was left near perfect - me and my friends saw a small amount of our deposit back...and we were not the only ones. Of course, Chancellors may have changed in the last two years...but i doubt it. Go to Premier.

This action took several months and was at great expense. Chancellors disclosed confidential emails to the landlady without my permission, furthermore Chancellors really did much to prevent us in recovering our deposit. I'm now having to report Chancellors to ICO. In my opinion you should seek a more ethical company to use and avoid Chancellors as an estate agents.

This EA comes across as smart and sophisticated, but beneath the shiney exterior lies a company…read morewhose only interest is money, with several (but thankfully not all) of their staff unable to hide the £ signs in their eyes. Probably more useful if you're selling (they can be very pushy getting people to agree), but not overly pleasant when you're a buyer. Their management company is also rather useless, who again seem to flash the cash, but in reality provide a very poor service with nothing getting done, and phone calls frequently going unanswered.

These people are stupid. I wanted to book a full survey on a house we're thinking of buying and to…read moreattend while the surveyor is looking around so he could explain in detail what he may find. In every phone call we made (around 6 calls) we said that we would like to attend but we never got to go. They never bothered to arrange for us to attend and didn't tell us that we couldn't attend. Every phone call was answered by someone that clearly had no idea what they were doing and always had to check with someone else. I phoned the day before our survey and asked to check what time they wanted us there and to double check that the home owner was expecting us. The woman on the phone had no idea so she said that she would check and call me back. I received a voice mail just saying that "our appointment was tomorrow morning". Moronic. These people are unorganized, simply incapable of listening to a client (WHO IS PAYING THEM TO DO A JOB) and have no idea how to do their job competently. Just avoid this company. Don't waist your time or money.
