Run as far way from Rent-A-Man Movers as you can! Purnell Gates sells himself as a business man that values integrity and will tell you that "satisfaction is guaranteed". That is far from the truth!
Purnell is a professional at ignoring calls or texts. He will tell you one thing and do another or nothing at all! Expensive D2 furniture that is designed to be taken apart and put back together, per the store where the furniture was purchased, will be ripped apart and damaged beyond repair. His employee will deny he did the damage and say that this furniture is not meant to be taken apart. Funny, it was perfect before they entered my home and that is what the furniture is designed to do. Purnell is very good at saying, "Sorry". The furniture is put back together with.... L brackets.
Below you will find Purnell giving himself his own review of "fast fast fast...", but what you will realize is fast means complete disregard for your belongings or anyone else's. Your belongings will get to their destination after your new neighbor's mail box is run over and your new yard driven on. The driver did not even stop and talk to the home owner! The home owner knocked on my door to tell me. Nice way to be introduced to the new neighbors! Countless items will be broken and damaged, beyond what realistically can be expected in a move. I am far from unrealistic. Furniture will be dropped, scratched and damaged beyond repair. He may wrap the furniture in a blanket, but that will not protect it from being shredded as his workers slid it around the bed of the truck seemingly finding every rivet on the truck bed. Most people would realize that you can not slide furniture across a truck bed. I will say that this piece of furniture was attempted to be repaired....after 2 months....and was told that I can not move it because the repair may not hold, per the man that did the work. Keep in mind that that same person said the true repair was "out of his lane". Purnell trying to get out of the repair as cheap as possible somehow got him to complete it. Purnell told me he would bring the furniture piece on Friday, but he did not show. No message was given. Saturday morning comes and he is suddenly at my door, unannounced, with my furniture. What if I wasn't home?? A group of high school kids with a truck and trailer would do a better job, communicate better and take better care of my belongings. Purnell's lack of communication and my feeling that he wasn't going to show up should have been the red flag that I should have listened to. If it wasn't for a recommendation that I trusted, I wouldn't have hired him.
An abbreviated list: My concrete top patio side table was broken. I was told he will get it fixed and took the pieces. It has been 6 months since I have seen it.... He said because it is concrete, it is weather sensitive to make the repair. Must not be warm enough now? Night stand that was in my child's room for 15+ years without a scratch, yes without a scratch, now has a large gash in the top. My dinning room table has a bow in it and the chairs' corners are all damaged. An end table was dropped and can not be repaired. Couch feet were askew and chipped upon arrival. Patio furniture all has to be sanded and repainted. The list goes on.
It has now been 6 months since the move. Purnell Gates intentionally ignores calls and texts to fix or replace furniture. The last time I was actually able to talk to him, he said he,"need to talk to her". Her is the person that recommended him to me. He is looking to have someone else bail him out. When I stated that he didn't need to talk to her as she has nothing to do with the business relationship, he said, "I do need to talk to her" and then rudely hung up. The interesting thing is, that person that he needed to talk to sided with me! Five weeks later, he will still not answer or return a calls or texts.
I have been nothing but patient and understanding and totally taken advantage of. To bring resolution to this whole matter because getting anything repaired or replaced with him was not going to happen, I offered a cash settlement of $400, pennies on the dollar. Was going to take care of it all myself using the money as far as it would go. Guess what I got...continued silence. When talked to the person that he needed to talk to about the amount, again, she sided with me. She
I also agree with another reviewer, Lisa E., that the price quoted went up from the initial quote.
When the business owner posts is own review, I would also question the validity of the other reviewers.
Purnell Gates lectured his employees on numerous points about their job performance, but he doesn't listen to his own words. Accountability, responsibility, respect, follow through, communication and integrity are just words to him and hold no value in Rent-A-Man Movers actions and business practices. read more
