Ever since I move to Melbourne, I've been a firm believer in rental cars because I don't want the problems and baggage associated with owning a car. From regular servicing to maintenance to insurance to fast depreciation levels. So for the last year, car rental companies have been a friend of mine. Rent a bomb in Richmond is one of my favourites because they are flexible and the prices are normally cheaper than elsewhere. You have the option of renting an older car (maximum age is 10 years) or a new car. If you're only going to be driving in the metropolitan area, they'll advise you to take an older car (which is much cheaper) but if you want to drive in greater Victoria, you'll have to take a new car. The standard insurance comes with an excess of $1750 which is much less than most places that have premium of $3000 in case you get into an accident and there is also the option to lower this. Being an inner city dweller, I found I simply didn't need a car any longer. The cost of keeping it on the road, up keep and parking just didn't make sense. Now whenever we need a car for the day, weekend or even a few weeks we always go to Rent a Bomb in Richmond. Mind you, we never get a 'bomb' so to speak. We always get a modern car with everything we need like Bluetooth, steering control, air bags etc. We always feel extremely safe in the cars we hire. The pricing is extremely reasonable too. A $400 deposit is required and for 3 days we usually pay around $126 which I think is great as it is the same as 2 return V Line tickets to country Victoria. I highly recommend Richmond Rent a Bomb which is now located in Bridge Street. We have been coming back for over a year now so the staff know us and a super friendly. read more

Rent a bomb is the place to go for those of us who are without wheels and just can't justify the cost of hiring from the big rental chains. I have used them several times and keep going back. They have older model cars that are cheap as chips to hire if your looking to stay within the metro area, or if you need to venture a little further they have premium cars that are available also. The premium models require a deposit of $400 and you get 112kms per day. The insurance is terrific also $1750 if something unfortunate should happen, when you compare that to some of the bigger companies it's less than half. You can also reduce this premium to $500 for only $12 extra a day. Big tip. Make sure to call them to confirm your web booking is actually available. read more

Using rent a bomb Richmond was the worst decision I have ever made. The most unprofessional experience, the staff member I dealt was, was rude and actually lied to my face. They allowed me to book a van online at their closing time, on my way I realised and saw their closing time, I then called them to say I would be 6 minutes late. They refused to stay open for 6 minutes while i got there - 6 minutes past my booking time for me to get my van, they just shut the shop and didn't call me back when she said she would. I had a major event the following day which i told her, and i needed that van. I have since called them for an explanation and they were nothing but rude. They should not be booking vans out on line at the time they are closing. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY . Thank god for Car Next Door i got home booked one with them. A terrible experience - definitely be warned before you use them. You know with Rent-A-Bomb that you're aiming to pay less for relatively beat-up vehicle, which is fine. But the van we hired was in such bad condition the doors wouldn't even close properly, which made for dangerous driving, stank of petrol, and side mirror was also bent so you couldn't use it properly. Staff and managers there were aggressive and rude and of no help at all. Also, if they say you've added so much as a tiny scratch or small dent (to an already heavily dented/scratched and rusted vehicle), they'll write it up and take away your deposit straight away, or threaten to take the $1000+ excess off your account to make money. It's actually not at all a cost-saver when you add on how much fuel the old vehicles take. Had much better, more economical experiences with GoGet, Bunnings hire etc. which are actually just as cheap. Try someone else. read more

Didn't tell us about the cleaning costs, didn't explain the kilometre cost until we had already booked the car. Any kind of quote is going to be bullshit because you're gonna have to cover all these hidden costs which go into the hundreds. I'm also pretty sick of being discriminated against for being under 25 just so Rent-A-Bomb can make an extra buck. Also, the headlights didn't work which was very dangerous driving out in the sticks and they didn't care when we reported it afterwards. Do not go to these guys - rip off and you don't even get a non-broken car. read more

Really bad service. I still feel sick just thinking about the dirty, smelly van I hired from Rent-a-bomb Richmond. I don't want to think about it anymore. They're no cheaper than the next place and their cars are gross and hardly work. read more
