I never paid much attention, however, until recently, when one of my daughters expressed an interest in learning to play the violin. A quick internet search led me to their web page which provided some basic information. More useful and current information came via email with the owner Carolyn Stanton. She answered all of my questions promptly and professionally and we were registered and ready to go with violin lessons in no time. Erika is our daughter's teacher. Our daughter has no violin experience, and Erika has been very kind, encouraging and patient. After each lesson, she reviews with us how the lesson went (what went well, what was practiced, etc.) She also gives us guidance for what to practice at home until the next lesson. The school offers numerous musical classes - strings, piano, voice, guitar, ukulele, etc. Their brochure also indicates they offer visual arts classes and cooking classes. Who knew? Super convenient location (Manoa Marketplace). Lots of parking and lots to do while you're waiting for your budding musical virtuoso.

The teachers lead the class through singing and encouraging parents to do the same. Even the worse singer...hahaha...me sounds good when blending your voice with a great lead. Christina quickly makes the group comfortable through singing the hello song and then switching song to song mixed in with movements with filmy scarves, instruments in bags, and lively dancing. The class is definitely upbeat and songs are very easy to learn. Even if you cannot carry a tune the class is a great way to start the morning and just sing! It is AMAZING. Whether you have infants or older toddlers, this class is like no other- the teachers are upbeat, engaging and passionate, and put so much thought into each semester, which is called a different instrument (so cute!) Along with a songbook, you also get a CD (my daughter loved this during car rides as well as at home), and honestly the songs are probably the best I've heard for kids (they're similar to the Laurie Berkner Band, where they encourage movement, following direction and acting things out along with the music which is awesome for toddlers!) We are Music Together's biggest fans- we continued with their Zoom classes while quarantined (so thankful that they continued), and even without all the class perks of instruments, scarves, parachutes, fairy lights, etc. my daughter was glued to Zoom the whole session. Just had a discussion with Cindy and this review is heavily based on our chat. She has a wholesome approaching students by integrating all aspects of their life into their lessons, and believes one's emotions can be expressed by playing the piano, and I believe she is quite genuine about it. In her lessons, I do remember her emphasis on the fundamentals including posture, which reinforces discipline on the student, but she also aspires for creativity in the student. Overall, I'd recommend her due to her passion to inspire the youth in music. She has a gentle but strict approach which I think is a good fit for children, and you can expect to feel challenged and enlightened after your lessons.

They work with kids as young as 3, I think and all with the patience of a saint - they can put up with crying, stubborn behavior, fear, hesitation, with a smile on their face and a heart of gold! And Ms Shinogu brings great discipline into the class and doesn't put up with nonsense but she does it in a way that is extremely nurturing and caring. She really wants to support all of the students to be the best of themselves. The Tumbling classes can be hard to get into so if you're interested in tumbling, sign up as soon as class registration opens. Ms Gina was very understanding when we were first starting and helped us navigate our way through the classes and now we're there 3 times a week. One tough thing is that participating in the summer performance is very expensive and somewhat cost prohibitive between the participation fee, costume fees, volunteer requirement, and ticket prices. However, dance students are not required to participate in the performance and can still completely participate in the regular classes! The one awful thing about this place is the parking. 1) there is a free lot (register for 1 hour free, after that it's paid) across the small street but it's so hard to find a stall because it's shared with a lot of other places, the stalls are small, and so many cars can't park within the lines, 2) they can ticket you, even if you have paid - they did rescind it but only after I took the time to figure out how to dispute it, 3) there are a few street parking spaces up the hill but hard to get, 4) you can park at the municipal lot but have to allocate enough time to walk across the street, and sometimes that lot is full.
