My latest K-Drama watching binge has made me hungry for Korean food so when I read about Korean…read morecooking classes at the Culinary Institute, I signed up. There were 2 sessions and each class was limited to 16 participants and I was told the class books up quickly. The August class "Cooking Local Favorites: Korean" was taught by Chef Grant Sato, winner of the 2015 Global Taste of Korean International Cooking Competition. In the 4 hour class we cooked 3 recipes: Soondubu Jjigae (soft tofu stew) with tofu made from scratch!, Miyeokguk (Korean seaweed soup with beef), and Dakjjim (braised chicken with noodles and vegetables) Chef Sato's competition winning dish. Classes are held at the Culinary Institute of the Pacific's beautiful new kitchens on 4500 Diamond Head Road. Parking is right in front of the building and you are advised to wear close toed shoes and long pants. You can bring an apron if you want (I did not). All ingredients and cooking equipment are provided. Masks are required for participants. Upon arrival you are given the recipes and assigned to a station, 2 students to a station. My son took the class with me and we got the station right in front of the demo area which was nice. The stations each have two sinks, a stove, knives, pans, and the assistants bring you the ingredients for each dish. Chef Sato gives a demonstration at the front of the kitchen and everyone watches, then goes back to their stations to replicate what he just showed. The 4 hours pass quickly, there is much to do. I even learned how to cut up a whole chicken (my son would not touch it.) One of the things I really liked about this was finding out what exact ingredients Chef uses in his cooking so I took lots of pictures of the products. The resulting dishes were all delicious and we packed them up and took them home. There was a lot of food, enough for several dinners. I will definitely take more classes here! HINT: Since you are sharing a station, its fun to sign up with a buddy.

KCC Culinary School RULES!…read more The newest addition to KCC is The Culinary institute of the pacific located at the old Canon Club on Diamond Head Road. There is a gorgeous kitchen with state of the art preparation stations for each student, KCC has done a remarkable job to propel their Culinary program forward and upward. This first time, I had the privilege of visiting the kitchen facilities as well as sample food prepared by the students at the Culinary Institute for a contest sponsored by 7/11 Stores in an effort to expand on their 2019 take out bento menu. The contest will garner 2 winners with purse of $1000 and $750 respectively for the 1st and 2nd place winners. There were eight contenders. Each entry had to contain local ingredients, healthy with conscience to nutritional value and the preparation cost price point had to be something reasonable for 7-Eleven to be able to resell the lunch meal. The meal had to also withstand the heat as it sits under the heating element waiting to be purchased. I enjoyed their sampling process. We got to try each entry served in something more than bite sized portions, chat with each contestant about their creation, chat with the educating staff at the Culinary Institute and always with Yelp Events we got to visit and chat with fellow Yelpers old and new. It seems like he really cares about the kids learning to be safe drivers and is doing all he can to get the kids to interact. Which is not easy with teenagers lol.

The instructors are really patient with the young children and make the classes interesting, memorable and fun. They are currently prepping the dancers for a spring program. Prices are typical for an hour long activity. We're paying $20 per session. They offer classes for all levels including adult classes. There is a nice waiting area for parents and they can sit and watch the children learn. A restroom is available as well. There is no dedicated parking lot and street parking can be a challenge to find. We parked on a side street.

UPDATE on Apr 29: It took Page 6 (SIX!!!) weeks to reply to…read moremy email, only to say that she was sorry she'd taken "many days" (read: 44 days to be exact) to consider our situation, but her stance was still the same. She even acknowledged that the wording of her time-off policy was unclear. I wrote back 2 days later to let her know that we would come back in April, take May & June off, and complete our year commitment in July. She wrote back the next day, letting me know she consulted with other studio owners and made the decision to release us from our yearlong contract and reimburse me for the months remaining on it. I've attached our correspondence in March. I did not ask to be released from our contract for several reasons: a) I wanted my daughter to stick to her commitment to ballet, as she had promised when we paid nearly $1k for the year -- as a parent, we were deprived of developing her perseverance. b) We felt we should honor the contract, regardless of whether we agreed with it. c) My daughter liked her instructor (not Page), has many friends, and made many others in the months that she attended Page Academy. By ending our contract, Page also abruptly ended several relationships that my daughter worked hard to build. I still do not agree with Page's time-off policy. If I may make a recommendation (as I imagine Page will read this review one day), I think time-off should be allowed 4 weeks at a time wherever those 4 weeks fall. As it stands now, students take the calendar month off (from the 1st to the 30th/31st). But if a student takes December or May off, they receive fewer weeks off than other possible months (and some months have 5 weeks, depending on the day of the lesson). It would make more sense to offer a flexible 4 weeks off (therefore, 4 lessons off) that falls any time of the month. Since Page offers classes 48 weeks (12 x 4) during the year, it is fairer to let the customer choose which 4 weeks (aka month) they can take off. Instead, the current policy forces the student to take a "month" off when there may only 2 lessons held during that time. I hope I've illustrated the inflexibility, poor service & communication, and lack of consideration & care that I experienced during our year as a paying customer at Page Academy. Never should a paying customer have to wait 48 hours, much less 6 weeks (that is 1052 hours!), for a response. Never have I received such awful service. Absolutely horrendous. And please keep in mind that my daughter is 5 years old and has no idea any of this has happened. While I would have preferred that she finish the year, as she promised us and we promised Page Academy, I'm grateful my daughter hasn't asked about why she's no longer taking ballet. I'm not sure how I'd tell her that we were "released from our contract" (the closest definition I can think of is that we were kicked out or booted from the Academy). It's just really sad and disappointing all around -- all because of THEIR poorly-worded policies and time off that we requested that happen to fall during a "month" with only 2 lessons scheduled + inflexibility on prolonging my daughter's course so that her remaining 2 months could be back-to-back instead of piecemeal.

He was extremely responsive and answered all my questions over the phone before the first lesson. He is very patient, always came on time and had a face mask on for every lesson. After each lesson, he would message me on my teens progress. Jay was very easy to work with and I felt he and I were able to work together to achieve our goals. It was also very easy and convenient to pay for our lessons via payment app. Our teen passed on the first try!!!

Since I struggled with the practical aspect, he identified what I was hesitating on and walked me to through the concepts using drawn diagrams to ease me into it. His responses were prompt and I was able to start my lessons quickly without much wait time. For a long time I was nervous on the road, but from the first lesson I felt the most comfortable I'd ever been behind the wheel. Mr. Onishi's lessons were tailored to my needs and as a person that needs objective instructions, he was able to provide clear and simple step-by-step guides and markers for skills like parking. His vehicle is very easy to drive and what I appreciate most is he let me choose where to meet and where to end each lesson. He has a very funny but level-headed demeanor (imagine your cool asian uncle). Of the schools I researched, he was the only one that offered the best in convenience (in location), availability, and price. I would highly recommend taking lessons from Mr. Onishi.

They have easy online booking options and they sent you an email right away to sign a waiver. It's a little hard to find as it's between the Denny's and a parking lot, so just be vigilant while walking. They have a little shop with a receptionist and the instructors. There's a QR code for tipping your instructors which was convenient considering you're so tired after the lesson. I felt comfortable leaving all my stuff in the office (even shoes) as we walked across the street to the beach. My instructor, James, first practiced my footing, head placement, and movement. Then we paddled out, and he held my board the entire time. I got to enjoy the view prop my head on my board and give Ms. America waves even though no one was looking. That alone is worth all the money. James gave me tips and tricks each wave he pushed me in. Telling me to balance more on the right foot, etc. I felt like I had also paid to hang out with someone really cool. The vibes on the break were so chill. Everyone knew each other and were respectful with waves of hello and aloha. This is a must do in Waikiki. The waves were so soft on my beginner board and they have a 99.9% rate of success. James said he was able to help a 84 year old catch and stand up in a wave. Remarkable!!! I caught six waves and it felt incredible. I'm wiped out and exhausted, but so satisfied and excited for my next lesson. What a treat! I highly recommend Ty Gurney- ask for James!!
