While waiting in the exam room, I was feeling anxious and warm (it was over 80 degrees outside), so I pulled my hoodie off one shoulder to cool down. When the doctor entered the room with what appeared to be two nurses in training, the very first thing he said to me was, "Cover yourself up appropriately." I was completely taken aback and embarrassed by this comment. It immediately made me feel judged and ashamed, and I found it difficult to focus on the rest of the appointment because I was so upset. No patient should be made to feel uncomfortable or shamed about their appearance, especially in a medical setting where they should feel safe and respected. After more than a decade as a patient, this encounter completely shattered the trust and sense of respect I believed existed between myself and this practice. Unfortunately, because of how I was treated, I will not be returning to this practice. For context, I have attached a photo showing how I was dressed at the time. Given the 82-degree weather and the fact that I had simply moved my hoodie off one shoulder while waiting alone in the exam room, I do not believe the doctor's comment was warranted.
