Volunteer Legal Services Hawai'i

Check carefully what they call help you with. They only cover a very narrow scope of law. The…read morereception lady told me they only cover divorce, custody, domestic abuse type family cases. All other cases, such as immigration law questions will be turned away. I left with 2 slips of papers to call for immigration lawyers. Overall, it was wasted time for me. At least now I know. Never again.

Some background about the agency (via their website):…read more - They provide free or low-cost legal services to individuals and to the "non-profit organizations serving them" who may not normally have access to such due to limited financial means across the entire state of Hawai'i. - Fomerly known as "Hawai'i Lawyers Care" that was founded in 1981 by members of Young Lawyers Division of the Hawai'i State Bar Association - Accept cases dealing with: Family Law - Adoption, Child Advocacy, Child Support, Custody, Divorce, Guardianship, Temporary Restraining Orders, Visitation, Parenting Plans, Elder law General Law - Civil Rights, Collections Defense, Consumer, Contracts, Employment/Unemployment, Foreclosure, Immigration, Land Deeds, IRS/Tax, Landlord/Tenant, Non Profit, Public Benefits, Real Property, Social Security, Wills/Probate - The number above is their intake line for residents of O'ahu. For folks on the neighbor islands, call toll-free at 1-800-839-5200. - There's a $15 processing fee that they charge if they are able to off you their services. A very reasonable fee payable in the form of cashier's check or money order. They don't take cash, personal check or credit card. Fee has to be paid before you consult with any of their attorneys. I don't know where the first reviewer got his information from, but they are still open and operating. Open: Mon. - Fri., 8 AM - 4 PM. Don't know if any parking is available within their building; if you're visiting during regular office hours, it's best to arrive early and try to find street parking. Usually, you can find a bunch of open metered stalls available on Punchbowl Street after 2-3 PM. If you're going on a Mon. or Tues., this might not be the case since there's a glut of people taking up the parking to go to the unemployment office nearby. This is a non-profit agency operating on limited funds in an economic recession & the lawyers here provide their services pro-bono (read: FREE!), so no doubt they'll be inundated, period. You can call their number and a automated answering system will pick up. They recommend that you leave ONE message stating your name, brief synopsis of your manner (leave a sentence or two, not an entire paragraph), and a number. I did that and my phone call was returned within 2 business days. Be sure you answer the call from a 555-xxxx number or else you'll be playing "voicemail tag" like I did. I just called the same number again, left a brief message w/my name & number & they returned my call within a business day or two. Some tips: 1) Make sure you're able to provide a clear brief synopsis of your case or reason(s) for seeking legal help. This summary will be used by them to determine whether or not they can help you & will be provided to the attorney consulting about your case. 2) The $15 processing fee is only payable in cashier's check or money order made out to "Volunteer Legal Services of Hawai'i." No cash or personal checks allowed! 3) If you're chosen to receive their services, an appointment will be made for you to consult your matter with an attorney. These appointments are made anywhere on a weekday between 5 PM - 8 PM and take place at their offices. 4) They'll call you to set up a day and time for your appointment. In addition, they'll call you the day before to confirm it. CALL THEM BACK even if you have to leave a message. 5) These are attorneys providing their services pro-bono aka "they're working for free." Show up to your appointment early, bring any necessary paperwork/forms/etc. in support of your legal matter, and treat them with respect. These attorneys are volunteering hours outside of their regular full-time job out of the goodness of their hearts. I, along with other residents in this state, are very fortunate that this kind of non-profit agency exists for our benefit. Don't abuse it, be prepared & treat them in a professional manner.
