What a gorgeous dog park!! This is by far my favorite dog park in Tucson due to its huge size, long…read morelayout, and beautiful landscaping. The long, multi level layout helps break up different groups of dogs and seems to cut down on the size and frequency of dog fights that can break out at any dog park. The trees provide some wonderful and much needed shade in the Tucson heat. Most dog parks in Tucson have very few trees (just your run of the mill open, bare grass, fenced-in dog park with a few picnic tables), so I was very pleasantly surprised by the abundance of desert trees and bushes! There's a ramp down to the bottom half of the dog park, which makes this relatively wheel-chair friendly. There's also a cool cement tube installed near the ramp that dogs can run down inside. I understand peoples' complaints about the lack of grass and therefore dustiness of the park, but this *is* Tucson. Dirt is not only unavoidable, it's the environmentally friendly option! Everyone we've met there has been lovely - even during our first visit, they engaged us in conversation, got to know who we were, and began to greet us by name once we had been there a few times. All of the people at the dog park did their best to pick up after their dogs and refill the water buckets. Clearly, this is a group of people who really care about their animals.

We…read moredidn't really explore a whole lot of the park, but it did seem to be a pretty popular place to go bike riding or taking a dog for a walk. On the plus side though, this park is near a few other larger parks, so it isn't super busy. We had no problem finding parking or getting access to one of the many picnic tables. So, if you want a more chill place to enjoy a picnic with nice views of the Catalina Mountains, this is probably a pretty good spot.

There is a nice pathway all the way around that I love to walk while my dogs play. There is also plenty of shade. The small dog side does not have the space for a walkway, but has plenty of seating for hanging out with your dogs. There are water fountains for humans and dogs on both sides and rakes and shovels to use as pooper scoopers. Pretty much everyone that goes there are friendly and attentive of their dogs. The parks are poop free most of the time, but sometimes there is a missed pile. The fencing is pretty secure, but very small dogs can get under the fence between the big and small dog areas. Just keep an eye on your wee pups. Parking is very close and there are plenty of spaces. There is also a playground nearby if you have children old enough to play on their own. Another cool thing is that Ivan was a Tucson PD Canine and this dog park is a memorial to him.

I'm so pleased we found this dog park. We've been to many over the past few months with our new…read moredog. Most are pretty good but they run the gamut from too small like the one closest to our home to too large like at Reid Park. Some have unfriendly people and some have people that use the park in lieu of a single's bar. (Seriously!) Others hardly ever have dogs other than very large breeds. Northwest is near enough to our home to be able to be a daily trip for our girl. The people are friendly and the dogs are well behaved. Our dog loves to romp with the usual crowd who show up in the late afternoon just before sunset. By the way, the dog park here is a FABULOUS place to take in gorgeous sunsets over the mountains. There is a large dog and small dog area and people at this park seem to actually pay attention to those designations unlike the Pit Bull owners at Reid Park. Likewise, the breeds that are present are well behaved and not aggressive. There is the occasional steroid pumped guy with a Pit but it's not an everyday occurrence and they usually don't stay but for a minute or two. Northwest has, by far, the friendliest, most fun, and least pretentious crowd of owners and dogs I've seen in Tucson. A great way to spend the close of the day! Addendum: Ever since we've been going to dog parks in Tucson, I've wondered why they all have picnic tables and in addition really slick rock tables. I never thought people actually ate meals in a dog park until I saw people at this park with food recently. Obviously, it was an issue as all the dogs wanted to check out the food. But the real problem came a few days later when we took our dog to the park. She smelled the food that had been spilled on the table and jumped right up (something she never does at home). Before we could reach her she'd lost her footing on the slick rock surface and skidded off onto the ground. She tore her Cranial Cruciate Ligament and we're left with a hurting dog and a $2000+ vet bill for surgery. Then I found out that my pharmacist's dog had an identical injury from this same slick rock picnic table at the dog park. So, I've lowered my rating of the park (and all others) until the parks department takes appropriate action and removes these high slick tables from the parks (particularly the small do areas) and stops people from bringing human food into the dog park for a picnic. If you are going, station yourself near the table so you can grab your dog if they decide to jump up to investigate the food smells!
