I am signed up for more upcoming craft classes. They have great online resources and a good selection of books and magazines in the library. The staff is friendly, and they even provide free Oceans of Possibilities tote bags for carrying home your books. A great modern facility that even has a garden with tables where you can relax and read your books!

We did the one hour walking tour of Lewes today and had a great time! Our tour guide was so funny…read moreand engaging! We walked around to a few different houses, graveyards, and buildings on the tour. You don't have to walk all that far, but keep in mind the tour is standing and sometimes in the sun. We enjoyed learning more about the history of Lewes and think the tour was well worth the $10 fee. We will be back again soon!

The marker reads, "The origins of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows can be traced to the creation of beneficial trade societies in England. Composed of craftsmen who practiced a variety of different or "odd" occupations, the purpose of these organizations was to support the needs of members and improve the communities in which they lived. The I.O.O.F. was formally established in this country in 1819. In 1834, the Odd Fellows of North America separated from the English Order. Some years later a group of Milton residents organized for the purpose of establishing a local lodge. On September 15, 1848, a charter was granted for Golden Rule Lodge #17. In 1853, members voted to buy a suitable piece of land on which to erect a Lodge Hall. The first meeting was held here on January 3, 1855. In later years the Odd Fellows' women's organization, the Rebekahs, also met here. Like many such facilities, this structure was designed to include space for business and community use on the first floor, with a lodge room above. From 1920 until 1980 this was the location of the town's library. Since its organization, Golden Rule Lodge #17 has continued to emphasize the principals of "Friendship, Love, and Truth" through its services to the citizens of Milton." In order to make room for a new, larger brick courthouse to be constructed on the same grounds, that building was relocated from The Circle onto Bedford Street in 1837. In 1976, the original Courthouse underwent restoration, and it is periodically utilized for special events. The original whipping post is still standing on The Circle. The marker reads, "Constructed in 1791 at the direction of the State Legislature, this structure served as the seat of Sussex County government until 1837, when it was sold and moved to this location to make way for the construction of the present County Courthouse. It was later used as a private residence, and also served as a printing shop. On September 20, 1962, the building and lot were conveyed to the State of Delaware. A major renovation project was undertaken in 1974 with funding provided by the State and the National Park Service. The building was dedicated on Return Day in 1976, in honor of the nation's bicentennial." There is parking off the Georgetown Circle, so if you're nearby check this place out. Located a few blocks from Georgetown Circle, this marker points out the history of this important…read morebuilding. It is a two story structure with four tall columns at the front. It could be a courthouse. Big windows on all four sides but it does not look like a very active building today. The marker reads, "In 1827 the Delaware legislature authorized a lottery for the purpose of funding the construction of "an Academy and Masonic Hall." Land was purchased in 1840, and construction commenced the following year. The building was formally dedicated on December 28, 1842. The Georgetown Academy had a prestigious reputation and was attended by students from throughout the county. Classes at this private institution were discontinued in 1885 when a new public school was built in the town. In 1889 the Trustees of the Academy conveyed their interest in the property to Franklin Lodge No. 12. The building was remodeled to its present appearance in 1920." The smaller of two crossings over the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, the Savannah Road bridge is a two-lane…read moredrawbridge with a protected pedestrian lane on each side. The bridge was built in 1983 and gets a fair amount of traffic heading from the more touristy part of Lewes to the marina and the Cape May ferry terminal. It carries Business US Route 9. The other bridge is the US-9 and it is a fixed bridge. I didn't cross on that one today. The bridge is nicely decorated with murals. "Art in Bloom, a committe of Lewes in Bloom, along with artist Lorelei Meanor, created the Lewes Drawbridge Mosaic Mural in 2000. The 1000' mural took seven months and 1000 hours to complete. It contains nearly 50,000 tiles and 250 fish, all expertly designed and placed by over 50 Lewes in Bloom volunteers." [Review 18209 overall - 123 in Delaware - 1731 of 2022.]
