Which means you can rent from any library in Delaware. Like other progressive libraries, they have a small but very nice collection of books on CD, MP3 books, DVDs, as well as the typical periodicals and hardcover books. What came as a surprise to me is that the library also offers some kind of cool services to library card members; you can print any document to the library's printer and they will hold it for 72 hours. (small fee). You can also fax to and from the library if you need to. You also can download and read books on your ipads via the Internet, as well as reserve books from other libraries to be delivered to the Rehoboth Library using their online website. We walked around to a few different houses, graveyards, and buildings on the tour. You don't have to walk all that far, but keep in mind the tour is standing and sometimes in the sun. We enjoyed learning more about the history of Lewes and think the tour was well worth the $10 fee. We will be back again soon!

So it was interesting to spot a marker that points out the history of the War of 1812, which was caused by differences not resolved in 1776 and escalated in 1807 after the Royal Navy began enforcing tighter restrictions on American trade with France. This marker stands next to the Lewes Historical Society and reads, "The War of 1812 had a major impact on the town of Lewes and surrounding area. The naval blockade that was initiated by the British in March of 1813 lasted for most of the next two years. With maritime commerce limited, the local economy suffered. The regular presence of troops resulted in the use of many structures in the town for military purposes, and a camp for militia and U.S. Army Regulars was established near Blockhouse Pond. During the bombardment of Lewes on April 6th and 7th, 1813, numerous homes and businesses were damaged by naval fire from the British squadron. Known today as the Cannonball House, this structure still bears visible traces of the engagement including an iron cannonball that is lodged in its foundation. Built circa 1760 and enlarged in the 1790s, the house was then the residence of the McCracken family. Owner Gilbert McCracken and his son Henry were among the many bay and river pilots who served in Delaware militia companies that provided important service in the successful defense of Lewes during the war." "The Cannonball House was purchased by the Lewes Historical Society in 1963. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places." This is marker number SC-168 and was erected by the Delaware Public Archives in 2003. It is outside and therefore, there is no charge to view it. Service is personable, lots of information that provides insights into events and programs in the state, and overall, this is a place you can find respite from the heat, cold, and elements and find a variety of information in books, audio, video, computers, and more. One of the Delaware Public Libraries that has its own uniquer style. Go outside and look across the way and you see sweeping scenic images. Best of all, they have a huge selection of DVDs that spans multiple shelves and ranges from older films to ones as recent as last year. There's also a separate shelf for newly released movies that came out this year. Fortunately, we were able to get library cards simply by giving the librarian our IDs and an email confirmation of the place we were staying at. I guess that makes sense when most of your summer clientele are tourists. We come to Cape May once a year, so we'll be hitting this library up all the time.

You can get access to a bigger selection of ebooks if you sign up your library card with the libby app. For those that are here for the summer only and wondering how to get a card, you can bring in a copy of your tax record or I believe a utility bill to apply for a card. This really is a nice library. On the second floor there is a deck overlooking the wetlands and bay which would be a great spot to read and enjoy a cup of coffee. The sea isle city historical museum is also located within the library. Now, the main thing that gets this library 5 stars is the kid's programming. We came here all summer and the amount of programs they have for kids is awesome. The library in my hometown still refuses to do any in person indoor kids programming because of Covid and never brought back out the kid toys. My daughter is only 3 so she has never been able to enjoy our local library (Haverford Township) for basically her entire life. So, the SIC library has been a breath of fresh air this summer. It's only 30 minutes and the babies are given free reign to crawl or walk. It's very upbeat. From time to time free board books are given away, but handouts are always available with different rhymes/poems to do with your children.
