I literally couldn't walk for the first few weeks without excruciating pain, sciatic nerve jolts, and instant nausea. Pain meds did nothing (opiates included, despite my hesitance to try them). Med professionals, while helpful to some degree, couldn't give me a clear answer on direction of treatment--could get an injection, could get surgery, sort of up to me. They recommended I start with physical therapy, and I'm grateful for that recommendation--the spine specialist gave me the number to Back in Motion, in Portland, ME. I was skeptical. The space is in a strip mall on outer Brighton. The therapy space is shared with multiple physical therapist and patients. I worked with Dan S., and he quickly alleviated my concerns. Dan is thoughtful, smart, funny, and takes time to get to know his patients. He asks a lot of relevant questions and offers practical suggestions and feedback. We met weekly for about four months--I went from unable to stand for more than a few minutes at a time, to (on my last visit, recently) jogging laps around the parking lot, working on form and balance. There was a lot of work in between, but all of it was set in motion by Dan's guidance. He explained how each exercise would help in the strengthening and recovery process, and he built a customized program that worked for me. I incorporated his suggestions in my workout at the gym. Dan is the real deal. When my other healthcare professionals (chiropractic, nurse practitioner) asked about my PT progress, and I told them about the specifics of my plan, not only did they seem pleasantly surprised, they commended the direction of treatment and Dan's recommendations. How often do various wings of healthcare agree on anything?! Even though the space is a little small, and even though you might have to work around other patients, the staff is awesome, and it was well worth my time and energy. I highly, highly recommend that you give PT a try before you consider injections or surgery. And, if you go to the Portland, ME location (Brighton Ave), ask for Dan. You won't be disappointed.

I've been a patient of Dr. Greg Fox since 2003, and he's way more than a "back doctor." I send…read morepeople to him all the time. It's ridiculous how much good he's done for my health, my husband's, and at least a dozen of my friends and family. He's covered by your insurance (or will work with you if you're uninsured). He only schedules you for the appointments you need. My advice: go see him. I first came to see Greg after I was in a mild car accident and thought I should go see a chiropractor for the first time. My friend had recently found Greg and told me crazy stories of how he made her mom's neck longer, someone's eyes stop bugging out, and seeing before and after photos where patients looked like entirely different people. I thought I'd check it out. Sure enough, he found I had damage from whiplash that would've really messed me up down the road, and fixed it over a series of appointments. Years later, I have seen first-hand a whole bunch of similar seemingly crazy results. Greg is down-to-earth, not "woo-woo," but can seem like a bona fide miracle worker! Since Dr. Fox's the first and only chiropractor I've seen, I don't have much to compare him to. But for those I know who have, what makes him different is his applied kinesiology and muscle testing. I've come in thinking I have a weird feeling in my hip and Greg will deduce through the muscle testing process that I have a gall bladder, or some other organ, issue. He does some seemingly unrelated adjustments to my body, I leave with the prescription of eating two to three apples a day and then suddenly I'm fine. Dr. Fox has enabled my husband to get relief from crippling headaches and digestive issues. He's helped me through adrenal issues. Of course he's helped us with traditional spinal adjustment stuff too. Overall, Dr. Fox has helped us find a new way of eating and a generally more integrated way of life. Greg has become a friend. He genuinely cares about his patients' lives and well-being. His team has evolved over the years, and he's been willing to try out new things and see if they work. These days he has a couple assistants, a clinical coordinator, a nutritionist, a nurse and a part-time physical therapist who work in two offices. Why four, not five, stars? A couple reasons. 1) Sometimes it seems like there's the common "to a person with a hammer, everything's a nail" problem. Greg has a certain way of understanding the world and the body, based on so much experience. Sometimes that can close him off to other possibilities. (One friend of mine claims that Greg told her she had some type of an organ issue when she ended up having a broken bone. I don't know that's true, but an extreme example.) 2) There are persistent timing issues. Sometimes you have to wait a while to see Greg, because he can get caught up giving patients the time they need. If you're a working person, that can be a bummer. I now see Dr. Fox and Heritage Integrated Health regularly for "tune-ups" as part of maintaining good health. If you're in doubt, give it a try. It definitely won't hurt, and hey, it might change your life.

Due to the way their infrastructure was set up to accommodate the blue collar citizen that works full-time. He helped me set personal goals that are attainable and helped me create a plan to achieve those goals. It was very personalized, as he tailored it to what I enjoy/am comfortable with doing.
