The Japanese Friendship Garden connects to a bigger park with more trees and paved walkways, but most not shaded. Parking is $6 regardless how long you stay and there's a finicky kiosk that'll print out a ticket. As much as I love dogs, I am glad this place is now more strict about not allowing them within the gates. You could be fined if caught! This is a truly special place, not just for lovers of gardens and roses, but those passionate about history, genetic diversity and conservation. It's a link to the past, with a fragrance! The SJHRG often gets compared to the SJ Municipal Rose Garden a mile away and in my opinion, unfairly criticized for not being as well manicured. The point of the SJHRG is to celebrate the diversity of roses, and while the garden is organized by class, the result of that diversity can look like a hodgepodge of color. For an Instagram worthy venue, the Municipal Rose Garden is hard to beat; it's beautifully designed and impeccably maintained. Go there for a walk, picnic, photos or to celebrate a special event, and enjoy the roses. But go to the SJHRG with a different mindset. This is a garden where the roses are the stars, never the background and your visit itself is the special event. Start with the Old Garden Roses, and see how roses have evolved over time through migration and cultivation. Take a whiff of Rosa Mundi and know it's the same scent Josephine Bonaparte loved when she grew it in her garden. Go to the garden appreciating the importance and awesome responsibility of preserving these historic roses, and I think you will love it as much as I do.

Although they consistently showed up for scheduled visits, the attention to detail was lacking. Each visit lasted max ten minutes, and the work performed was minimal--primarily leaf cleanup, mowing, and basic shrub trimming. Weed control is listed as an included service, but this was not done consistently. In several instances, I was informed that weed control had been completed when it hadn't, which I confirmed through my exterior security cameras. Communication was also slow and often unresponsive; I frequently had to send follow-up texts just to get a reply. Ultimately, we have decided to discontinue the service.
