Jamison's Farm Market

Jamison's Farm Market

Located on the side of one of the roads less traveled, this historic, 7th-generation,…read morefamily-operated farm market, located in Roanoke County, Virginia, has been serving this region with fresh local provisions since 1875. The owners of Jamison's Farm Market (traditionally known as Jamisons' Orchard) on Grandin Road Extension belong to the German Baptist Brethren faith. They are "a traditional, conservative Anabaptist group closely related to Old Order Mennonites and the Amish, known for practicing plain dress, emphasizing community and peace." After finding out about this place from the owners of the reasantly opened "Needle in the Noke," when I visited them to write a review, I immediately made plans to come visit, and today I did so. Since the location is tucked in the middle of beautiful mountains, the warm, cozy, and welcoming ambiance does perfect justice to the surroundings -- complete with a friendly and very helpful staff. As I walked through the market and talked with staff members and customers, I discovered the great variety of products that they have to offer. Their core offerings include an abundance of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, and a wide selection of homemade jams, jellies, apple butter, honey, and baked goods from the local places like the Country Village Bakeshop. They also have a very popular Deli, renowned for their made-to-order sandwiches, salads, and soups. A customer was purchasing a Hearty Chicken & Rice Soup, spoke highly of it, and encouraged me to get one. Which I did, and enjoyed it at home. It was amazingly delicious. I invite you to view my photographs and video accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and its merchandise. For the holiday season they offer a variety of gift baskets filled with a selection of their best homemade products, Amish items, and handcrafted goods. I highly recommend that you give them a visit for all you shopping needs and that that you give them your total support.

My wife and I just completed our second trip down to the Spring Grove Farm. We liked it so much…read morethe first time 6 months ago we decided to give them a 2 night stay this time. This place is great, you can spend HOURS just looking through each of their rooms. We have been lucky and been the only people staying there both trips down (damn economy). The Sayers are awesome hosts and give you free reign of the house to explore as you want. The grounds are just beautiful. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a quaint B&B in So VA. However do NOT use google maps to get here, print out the directions off of their website! And ask for the blueberry waffles for breakfast!

We visited for one night in the dogwood cottage recently. It was a great cottage. The only…read moreproblem we had was with the smell on the first floor. The smell was like a concentrated version of a camp smell - musty and overbearing. We would not stay in the cottage again, but we would definitely stay in the main hotel. What a place. It wasn't clear where to enter. I went to what I thought was the entrance and the door was locked. I tried at another entrance in the middle and the door was locked. I went around to the northern side and five dogs came up to greet me all barking like they were going to chomp on me. I was starting to get worried about the place. Anyway, they didn't bite, but I didn't like the feeling of whether they would bite me or not while walking in to a side entrance that didn't even look like an entrance and trying to figure out how to check-in. I think the entrance/check-in needs some tightening up because our stay was great. They were very nice people, friendly and all. Great breakfast. Lot's of books. Oh and there is no TV in the dogwood cottage, but I knew that going in and it didn't bother me, but if you're addicted to TV the dogwood cottage is definitely not for you. Lot's of books and we were loaned a collection set of the civil war that was excellent for our evening perusal prior to retiring for the night. I definitely recommend this place and agree that you can't follow Google maps or you will end up somewhere, but not near the hotel. We would visit again, but not staying in that dogwood cottage, which by the way has the original floor they said back when it was a one-story building where they stored corn, husks and all to feed the animals on the farm I think they said. Probably why that smell on the first floor although it was fine on the second floor where the bedroom was, which by the way was very nice. So definitely plan to stay here if you are visiting Appomattox! =)
