When we…read morefirst met (as he picked us up at our hotel), I'd realized the folks at the Instrument Museum in Berlin had failed to return my passport, so I asked if we could stop by there, on the way to Potsdam, our tour destination, and Johannes made a special trip there for me! What a relief it was to get my passport back. The van Johannes uses is very comfortable, and he stocks cold drinks in case you get thirsty. You can shape your tours based on your interests. Our itinerary included a trip through the countryside to view Bablesberg castle and park- what an idyllic place! Then we traveled to Potsdam to view some of the reconstructed buildings. After that, we saw the water pump (which looks like a mosque and powered the fountains at Sanssouci), and we got our tickets for our tour. As we had time before our tour, we ate lunch in the old Dutch quarter- at the Flying Dutchman (delicious!). Our tour of Sanssouci was marvelous, and we never could have seen so much, and learned so much, so pleasantly, without our guide Johannes.

It was fast paced yet peaceful, informative yet not too overwhelming, & my guide was very fun. I highly highly recommend the 1hr tour via VIP (keeping it to just u or u & a guest...) The second tour was with 3 others, & was 3 hrs. Unfortunately... the second tour was not nearly as informative or as well paced. Way too many stops, not enough details & there didn't seem to be as good of a flow in general... & It was the same guide... (we think he was told to stay within a certain area... maybe that effected his presentation?) We were given a good rate for the 3hr tour, but still didn't explain the difference in experience. I am thankful that we got to see the very unique philharmonic Bldg, & the memorial dedicated to those killed just for being disabled by Hitler... so those highlights made the second tour worth it for me. So it's a mixed review... I really recommend the 1 hr VIP, but not the 3hr tour... at least not unless they confirm the sites to be seen within that time.

You must take a bus tour of Berlin when you arrive. It tells you where to go and what to see…read more Earphones with a variety of languages are available to hear the running commentary. As long as you keep your ticket, you can jump off anywhere on the route, see what you want and catch the next bus to continue on your trip. Knowing this, you must catch the early bus and make a day of it. You learn so much and see sights which you may have missed had you been on foot. Don't forget to pick up your mapwhen you get your ticket. Some hotels sell the tickets in advance but since we were staying at the Westin Grand we only had to cross the road. (Unter den Linden) Reasonably priced but make sure you don't miss the last bus !! We did !!

She is one of the best tour guides I've yet encountered and I've taken a hell of a lot of tours. She speaks very clearly (we're both native speakers of American English, so that helped as well), projects her voice well, and almost always speaks with clear intention. I never felt she was wasting our time with too much detail or circular talking; the pacing of the route and stops worked very well. She did a great job managing the group, making clear where we were going and where we should stand to see and hear everything while not blocking pedestrian traffic. She encouraged questions and made the experience interactive, which kept us fully engaged the whole time. At no point was I bored or wondering when the tour would end; in fact, I was surprised at the end of both tours that 3 hours had already flown by. Hannah did a great job of demonstrating the modern relevance of history and exploring the conflicting interests and biases of the people involved in historical events. A lot of this history is very heavy, particularly on the Third Reich tour, and she gave it all the gravity and respect it deserves. I highly recommend these tours, especially for history-lovers.

Rhyse's knowledge of history was amazing, and he seemed to have a lot of personal experience in telling more about the places we walked as well. Staff is mostly friendly, especially on the RE1 line between Frankfurt (Oder) and Magdeburg by way of Fürstenwalde (Spree), Berlin, Potsdam and Brandenburg/Havel, branded as the first Regional-Express service in Germany that started its success story about 20 years ago. They are usually bilingual and will gladly give you information in both German and English. Some also speak basic Polish or Russian. Tickets cannot be bought onboard anymore except for select few rather expensive tickets (1st class excess, Rail Rovers for Berlin-Brandenburg or the entirety of Germany), but these can be paid for by credit cards and now also by debit cards. Trains are fairly clean and refurbished to comparatively high standards with power sockets in both first and standard class. Much more so than in certain other regions (Yes I'm looking at you DB Regio NRW) - probably also because the Berlin-Brandenburg Passenger Transport Executive (VBB, Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg) is constantly watching the conduct of the regional transport companies.
